GOP candidate blasts California Democrats over "outrageous" mile-based tax.
California's proposed mileage tax, or "road charge," would replace the gas tax with a per-mile fee, which GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton says is an absolute rip-off.
If enacted, the plan will track every single journey made by anyone driving anywhere in California and charge drivers based on how many miles they drive. "You're gonna have to pay a charge for every mile you drive," Hilton said in a video shared on X.
Hilton called the tax an outrageous proposal that would increase taxes even further for Californians, saying, "We already have the highest taxes in the country, the highest gas tax, vehicle registration." The GOP candidate has raised the most money of gubernatorial candidates outside of billionaire Tom Steyer and is vowing to veto any bill attempting to pass this road charge.
Assembly Bill 1421 passed 43-18 and won't enact the tax but will fund research on rates and collection methods. Research should be completed by January 2027.
