GOP gubernatorial candidate schools Democrats on ‘outrageous’ tax that could charge drivers per mile

GOP candidate blasts California Democrats over "outrageous" mile-based tax.

California's proposed mileage tax, or "road charge," would replace the gas tax with a per-mile fee, which GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton says is an absolute rip-off.

If enacted, the plan will track every single journey made by anyone driving anywhere in California and charge drivers based on how many miles they drive. "You're gonna have to pay a charge for every mile you drive," Hilton said in a video shared on X.

Hilton called the tax an outrageous proposal that would increase taxes even further for Californians, saying, "We already have the highest taxes in the country, the highest gas tax, vehicle registration." The GOP candidate has raised the most money of gubernatorial candidates outside of billionaire Tom Steyer and is vowing to veto any bill attempting to pass this road charge.

Assembly Bill 1421 passed 43-18 and won't enact the tax but will fund research on rates and collection methods. Research should be completed by January 2027.

I'm totally against this mile-based tax 🚫💸. I mean, who wants to get charged for every single mile they drive? It's like, what's next? Charging us for breathing gas or something 😂. The fact that it's being proposed in California is just crazy, considering the state already has some of the highest taxes in the country 🤯. And now we're supposed to add another tax on top of that? No thanks! I think it's a total rip-off too 🤑. But you know what really gets me? The fact that this guy Steve Hilton is making a big deal out of it and claiming he'll veto any bill attempting to pass it 🚫💪. I just hope the research will be done properly by 2027, or else we might end up with even more unnecessary taxes 😒.

I'm not sure I buy into Steve Hilton's rant about this mileage tax 🤔. He's saying it's a rip-off, but what's so bad about paying for the roads you use? It sounds like a fair way to collect revenue, especially since gas taxes have been stuck at 18 cents per gallon since 1993 💸. I mean, can't we just modernize our tax system already? 📊 And isn't this just another way to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution? I need some more info on how this would actually work before I jump onto the anti-tax bandwagon 😒. Where's the data supporting the claim that it'd increase taxes for Californians? Sources, dude! 💡

Ugh, mile-based tax? Are we living in a sci-fi movie or something? Like, who needs that level of tracking? I'm pretty sure my car's GPS already knows how many miles I drive... 🚗💨 And can you imagine the paperwork? "Okay, Steve, I drove 50 miles today, but you're gonna charge me what, 5 bucks a mile?" 🤑 Sounds like a recipe for some dude to sue the state for harassment. But hey, at least it's not a sales tax... yet 😂

I'm still trying to wrap my head around a mile-based tax, you know? Like, what even is the point of tracking every single journey made by anyone driving in California? It just seems like they're gonna find new ways for people to get taxed 😒. And Steve Hilton's rant about it being an outrageous proposal doesn't really make sense to me... isn't that kinda the point of a tax? To, you know, fund roads and stuff? I'm also wondering if this is just another example of how Californians are always gonna be the guinea pigs for new ideas 🤔. And what's with the vetoes already? It feels like no one's really thinking about the bigger picture here 💡.

I'm totally not down with this mile-based tax idea 🚫💸. I mean, can you imagine having to pay extra just because you wanna drive around a bit? It's like they're gonna nickel and dime us to death! Steve Hilton's right, it's an outrageous proposal. I get that we need to fund our roads, but this seems like a huge overreach. And what's with the tracking every single journey thing? That's just creepy 🕵️‍♀️. I'm all for finding ways to reduce traffic and emissions, but this tax just feels like a cash grab. And if it happens, good luck trying to figure out how much you owe each month - that's gonna be a real headache 😬.

OMG, can u believe this? 🤯 So like, Steve Hilton is totally against the mile-based tax in CA and he's like a total expert or something! I mean, I get it, more taxes are always bad, but come on, it's not like we're gonna be driving every single day of our lives or anything! 😂 The idea that they're tracking every single journey made by anyone driving is just creepy. It's like Big Brother or something 🕵️‍♂️. I don't know about this tax, but I do know that Steve Hilton is a genius and will totally veto it if he gets elected 😎. Let's keep an eye on this, guys! 👀

I don't get why they have to track every single mile I drive 🤯🚗. Like, what if I drive my friend's car for a week because their car is in the shop? Am I supposed to pay extra for that one week? It just seems like so much extra work and it'll probably cost us more in the long run 💸. And also, can't we just lower our gas prices instead of trying to make more money off of driving? 🤑

omg can u believe this? a mile-based tax in cali is like, so unfair! it's one thing to pay for our roads while driving, but now they wanna track every single journey we take and charge us per mile? that's just not right 🤯.

i get that california has high taxes already, but i think there gotta be a better way to fund our infrastructure than nickel-and-diming us with this tax. it's like, what's next? charging us for breathing in oxygen or something? 💸

and why is steve hilton so against this? doesn't he know that california needs new ways to fund our roads and public transportation? i'm all about innovation and finding solutions to our problems, not just being stuck in the past 🚗💨.

🤔 I'm all for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, but a mile-based tax sounds like an overkill to me 🚗💸. We're already dealing with so much traffic congestion in Cali, the thought of tracking every single mile driven just seems like a headache 💭. And what's next? A per-mile fee for walking or biking too? It's one thing to have a gas tax, but this feels like an unnecessary addition 🚫. Plus, who gets to decide how much we're supposed to pay per mile? The government? 🤷‍♂️ I'm just not convinced this is the best solution...

🚗 I'm all for trying new ways to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, but this mileage tax thingy is just too much 🤯! I mean, can you imagine being tracked every single time you drive? It's like they're watching your every move 🕵️‍♂️. And the amount of money it could cost? My wallet's already feeling the squeeze with the gas prices and everything else that comes out 💸. Plus, what about all the people who don't own cars or can't afford to drive much at all? It just doesn't seem fair 🤷‍♀️. I'm not sure if we need a new tax burden right now. Can't we find other ways to make it work? Maybe there's some kind of alternative that won't be so intrusive... maybe 🤔

🤔 I'm not sure what's more cringeworthy, Steve Hilton's condescending attitude towards Californians or his outrage over a mileage tax 😂. Like, dude, you're a GOP candidate who's made a fortune off the fossil fuel industry... how is it your problem that people want to pay for the roads they use? 🤑 It's not like they're asking for a handout.

And let's get real, California already has some of the highest taxes in the country, but at least they're trying something new. A mileage tax could be a genius way to fund infrastructure and reduce our reliance on gas-guzzling vehicles. But no, Hilton is too busy being a party pooper to consider it 🚫.

I'm curious to see how this bill gets implemented and if it'll even come close to being passed. Maybe Steve Hilton's anti-mileage-tax crusade will be his downfall ⏰. Either way, I'll be keeping an eye on it 👀

um, have you guys ever noticed how weird it is when google maps tells you to take a certain route just so it can get data on your driving habits? like, what's up with that?! 🤔 i was just thinking about this the other day and i'm pretty sure i took a detour because of some weird algorithm trying to collect more info. anyway, back to this mileage tax thing... 43-18 is still kinda low for me, seems like it should be closer to 50/50 or something. btw, have you seen those new electric cars that can drive up to 500 miles on a single charge? 🚀
