Former Tory Councillor Admits Shocking Abuse, Including Drugging and Rape
A shocking case of domestic abuse came to light in Winchester Crown Court when 49-year-old Philip Young, a former Conservative councillor, admitted nearly 50 serious crimes against his ex-wife Joanne Young over the course of 14 years.
Young pleaded guilty to 11 counts of rape, 11 counts of administering a substance with intent to stupefy, as well as multiple charges of voyeurism and assault by penetration. He also admitted four counts of sexual assault and one count of publishing obscene articles.
Joanne Young, 48, bravely sat in the same courtroom where her ex-husband pleaded guilty, becoming an unwitting key witness in his own downfall. The abuse is believed to have taken place between 2010 and 2024, with the most recent incidents alleged to have occurred just a few years ago.
Young's rise through politics appears to have been marked by secrecy and deception, as he rose through the ranks of the Conservative party, becoming a councillor in Swindon from 2007 until his resignation in 2010. The reasons for his sudden departure were somewhat flimsy, with Young claiming that balancing family life with work was taking priority.
However, behind closed doors, Young had been carrying out horrific abuse against his wife, including drugging and raping her on multiple occasions. As part of his plea deal, five other men appeared in court on Friday, accused of aiding or abetting the abuse against Joanne Young.
