Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election | CNN

Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin has conceded defeat in the country's parliamentary election, marking a significant shift for her left-wing government. The opposition National Coalition Party (NCP), led by Petteri Orpo, has claimed victory, with their leader vowing to "fix Finland" and its economy.

The NCP won 48 seats in parliament, narrowly ahead of the nationalist Finns Party with 46 seats, while Marin's Social Democrats secured 43 seats. The results show a significant increase for the NCP, which had been polling behind Marin's party but maintained a narrow lead over the Finns Party in recent months.

Orpo has promised to curb spending and stop the rise of public debt, which has reached just over 70% of GDP since Marin took office in 2019. He will now get the first chance at forming a coalition to obtain a majority in parliament.

Marin's government has faced criticism for its handling of several issues, including her partying lifestyle and the high level of public spending. The Prime Minister herself acknowledged that while she has gained support and seats in parliament, it was not enough to secure victory.

The NCP's victory marks a significant shift to the right in Finnish politics, with Orpo vowing to address the country's economic woes. Marin's government, on the other hand, will continue to govern under the condition of coalition talks with the NCP.

Marin's tenure as Prime Minister has been marked by several notable foreign policy actions, including her push for NATO membership following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The process is now almost complete, with Helsinki expected to join within days after all Western defense alliance members approved the accession.

As Finland's youngest ever Prime Minister when she took office in 2019, Marin remains a popular figure among many Finns, particularly young moderates. However, her government has faced criticism for its handling of sensitive issues, including immigration and public spending.

just got word from finland 🇫🇮... looks like sanna marin's left wing gov is getting the boot 😬. gotta say, not surprised though - those partying pics didn't exactly help her campaign 🤣. anyhoo, petteri orpo's in now and he's all about fixing the economy & curbing public debt 💸. wonder how that'll go down with finns who love marin despite her gov's flaws 😐. still, gotta give credit to marin for pushing through nato membership - not an easy feat 🙏. guess we'll just have to wait and see how orpo does as pm 👀

😬 Finland's parliamentary election results are pretty interesting. I think it's cool that Petteri Orpo is now leading the NCP and vowing to fix the economy 📉. But at the same time, I'm a bit worried about how this shift to the right will affect immigration policies in Finland... I know Marin's government was criticized for its handling of this topic, but I think it's super important that they prioritize inclusivity and diversity 🌎.

I also wonder what will happen with public spending now... 70% of GDP is a lot! 🤑 Orpo wants to curb it, which could have some positive effects on the economy, but might also affect social services and welfare programs. It'll be interesting to see how he balances his promise to "fix Finland" with the needs of all Finns 🤔.

Overall, I think this election results show that Finnish politics is evolving, and it's going to be fascinating to watch how things play out in the coming months 😃

I dont think Orpo is gonna be able to "fix" Finland that easily. The economy's been in trouble for ages & it takes a lot more than just reducing spending to sort it out 😒. Marin's party has done some good stuff but the Finns Party's not as bad as people make them out to be either 🤔.

I still think Marin would've won if she'd run on her foreign policy record instead of that partying scandal stuff 🙄. NATO membership was a big deal & I think most Finns were on board with that 💯. But, I guess you can't win 'em all 🤷‍♂️.

The NCP's gain is the Finns Party's loss but I'm not sure Orpo's gonna be able to navigate the complex world of coalition politics without making some enemies 🤦‍♂️. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how things play out in the next few months 👀.

🙏 just saw that Sanna Marin conceded defeat in Finland's election 🤯 I'm not surprised though, the NCP had been gaining ground and the Finns Party was getting stronger too 🌪️ Petteri Orpo's promise to "fix" Finland's economy is interesting, but we'll have to see how he does it 💸 one thing for sure tho, Finland needs a change and I'm hoping Orpo will bring some fresh ideas 💡 about that partying lifestyle tho, maybe she was just trying to unwind 😴 anyway, it's gonna be an interesting few months in Finnish politics 🤔

Yooo, what's good fam? So Marin went down swinging 🤯, I gotta respect that. The NCP's been gaining steam lately and it looks like they're here to stay 💪. Orpo's got his work cut out for him tho, trying to "fix Finland" on a budget is gonna be a tough pill to swallow 🤑. Can't say I'm surprised though, the Finns are a practical bunch. Anyway, I hope Marin can keep it together and make a smooth exit, her partying ways were getting some major shade 😂. On the bright side, NATO membership is finally happening 🎉! The country's gonna be stronger and safer under Finland's leadership 👍. Time to see what Orpo's got cooking in the kitchen 💼!

I'm low-key shocked 😒 that the NCP won! I mean, Petteri Orpo's got some solid promises about fixing Finland's economy... but let's be real, it's gonna take more than just curb spending to address the root problems 🤑. And what's with all the drama around Marin's partying lifestyle? Can't she just have one good night out without everyone making a big deal about it 🤣. But seriously, I'm curious to see how Orpo's gonna make Finland "great" again... is that even possible? 🤔

Finland's gonna be stuck with even more austerity measures 🤦‍♂️ now that Orpo is in charge. I mean, come on, his party's already got a rep for being super conservative, so it was only a matter of time before they started cranking out the budget-cutting talk. And let's be real, Marin's whole "left-wing" vibe is basically just a fancy way of saying she's always up for a good party 🍻 (no offense to her or anything...). Anyway, I guess it's all about stability now and keeping Finland afloat until whoever comes next can figure out what's really going on.

I'm kinda surprised that Sanna Marin went down without a fight 🤔. I mean, she's been in power since 2019 and had some pretty decent policies going on, like pushing for NATO membership 🤝. But, it seems like the Finnish people just weren't vibin' with her party's handling of public spending and immigration issues 💸📉. I think this is a big deal because it shows that Finland is moving to the right, and it'll be interesting to see how that plays out in terms of their economy 🌎. On the flip side, I'm kinda worried about Petteri Orpo's promise to cut spending – we all know how that can go down 😬. At least it's a fresh start for Finland, and maybe this is exactly what they needed to get some things going again 💪.

I just got back from the most random adventure at the lake 🌊! I was out for a walk and saw this guy with a ridiculously long beard that reached his chest 😂. I mean, what's up with that? Is he trying to break some sort of record or something? Anyway, it made me think about how Finland is always like that - all rugged and natural, but sometimes you just see these...interesting characters 🤣.

So, yeah, Sanna Marin's concession speech was pretty predictable. I mean, the NCP had to win with those promises of fixing the economy 😬. I hope they can really deliver on that because Finland's public debt is getting out of control. On a more positive note, did you guys hear about Helsinki joining NATO? 🤝 That's so cool! Can't wait to see what kind of defense pacts they'll be signing in no time ⏰.

🤔 so i'm thinking finland just had a big election and the new govt is gonna try to fix things... it sounds like petteri orpo's party won with like 48 seats or something? 📊 anyway marin's party lost and she's not happy about it. seems like they were worried about public debt and stuff, so orpo's all like "i'm gonna cut spending". hope that helps or whatever... 🤷‍♂️

just saw that finland's parliamentary election is done 🤔... think marin's loss is kinda interesting tho, she was pretty popular back in the day 😊 but i guess not enough to keep those seats 🤷‍♀️. wonder what's gonna happen with her party now? and orpo's promise to 'fix finland' sounds a bit ambitious, hope he can deliver 💪. dont know about the economy tho, seems like they've got some debt issues 📉. anyway, seems like finland's politics is shifting to the right 👀... time will tell if that's a good thing or not 🤔

So I was following the Finnish election drama closely 🤔 and I gotta say, it's like Petteri Orpo just took all the responsibility off Finland's shoulders, no? Like, he's vowing to "fix" everything, but we know that's a pretty tall order... especially considering how deep in debt Finland is 💸. And yeah, Sanna Marin's partying lifestyle thing did take some heat during her term 🎉. But hey, it's all water under the bridge now, and she'll probably be back in power soon enough. I mean, Finns love their young leaders 😊. Still, this shift to the right in Finnish politics is interesting... it'll be cool to see how Orpo handles things, especially with the NATO membership push still ongoing 🚀

im not surprised about Sanna Marin concede defeat 🤔, the left-wing parties have been on a decline in Finland, especially with people's concerns about economy rising 💸. Orpo's promise to curb spending and fix the economy is music to many ears 🎶, Finland can't keep going like this with 70% of GDP as public debt 😬. Marin's partying lifestyle was always gonna be a point against her, but I think she did some good things for Finland too, especially on NATO membership 🤝. Orpo might have his work cut out for him, but I'm rooting for him to make a change 💪

I'm not surprised about this result lol... 🤷‍♂️ Finland's politics have always been pretty centrist anyway. Marin's party has been moving to the left but still pretty moderate compared to other European countries. I think the Finns are just tired of the same old thing and need a change, you know? The NCP winning is not super surprising though - they've been polling ahead in recent months and Petteri Orpo's got some charisma going for him.

I'm also curious to see how this will play out with NATO membership... 🤝 it's a big deal for Finland, especially after what's happened with Russia. Marin's government has done well on that front, imo. And yeah, the Finns Party is no joke either - they've been gaining ground too.

It'll be interesting to see Orpo form his coalition and try to address those economic issues... 📈 I'm not sure if it'll make a huge difference but at least he's trying. And on the bright side, maybe this will bring some fresh ideas to Finnish politics 😊.

idk why ppl r upset about sanna marin losin the election 🤔. she's still one of the most popular ppl in finland and ppl know she did a good job 👍. ncp's victory might b a bit of a shock, but orpo's promisin to fix the economy & cut spending is actually pretty reasonable 💸. it's not like marin's party was invincible or anythin' 🤷‍♀️. & btw, her partying lifestyle didn't hurt her in finland lol 😂. ppl over there seem to value youth & charisma more than just being perfect 👫. anyway, looks like ncp's gonna try their hand at formmin a coalition now 🤝. wish 'em luck 😊.
