‘FC Barcelona Didn’t Sign Me Because I Was Ugly,’ Says 90s Legend

Victor Onopko, a stalwart of Russian football, has revealed that his illustrious career was almost derailed when FC Barcelona deemed him unsuitable due to his physical appearance. The former defender, who played an impressive 216 games for Real Oviedo and 28 for Rayo Vallecano, attributed his failure to join the Camp Nou giants to the club's aesthetics committee.

Speaking exclusively on the El Bigote de Abadía Youtube channel, Onopko confessed that he had actually signed with Oviedo in the summer of 1995 but arrived in Spain only a few months later. The deal came with an unusual clause: if another club offered him one more dollar, he could leave Oviedo for that team.

Despite being on the radar of Atleti Madrid and even FC Barcelona's Dream Team era, Onopko was ultimately overlooked by the Catalan club due to his perceived lack of physical attractiveness. When asked about this, Onopko expressed disappointment at the decision, claiming that a member of the coaching staff told him he was "ugly" and therefore not suitable for the team.

The revelation sheds new light on Onopko's remarkable career, which saw him rack up 109 caps for Russia as well as scoring seven goals in La Liga. While joining FC Barcelona would have been an incredible coup, Onopko ultimately ended up playing for smaller clubs instead.

Despite missing out on a chance to play alongside the likes of Ronald Koeman and Abelardo at the Camp Nou, Onopko has no regrets about his decision. Instead, he remains proud of his achievements in Spanish football and continues to draw on his experience as an assistant manager for Rostov.

OMG u guys ! Can u believe this?? 😲 Victor Onopko was almost not good enuf 4 FC Barcelona cuz of his look lol 🤣 I mean, who does that kinda thing tho? 🙄 The aesthetics committee should b ashamed! 🚫 As if physical appearance has anything 2 do w/ a person's skills on the pitch 🏟️. Onopko's career is actually pretty cool tho 🎉 216 games for Real Oviedo & 28 for Rayo Vallecano? 🔥 He still managed 2 rack up 109 caps 4 Russia & score goals in La Liga 🇷🇺💪. Im glad he didnt join FC Barcelona cuz we need more players w/ attitude like him 💁‍♂️! 👍

omg i cant even imagine how harsh it must've been for Victor Onopko to be told that by a member of the coaching staff 😱😢🤕 he's actually super proud of what he achieved in spanish football though and we should all take note that physical appearance shouldn't hold anyone back from chasing their dreams 💪🏽💫

I mean, can you even imagine? 😂 This story is like something out of a comedy movie. I'm sure Onopko's height and looks just didn't fit the FC Barcelona aesthetic 🤣, but it's amazing how much of a difference that made in his career. But, on a more serious note, it's kinda cool to think about how people can be so focused on physical appearance, you know? Like, what even is attractive? 💁‍♂️ To each their own, right? 🤷‍♂️ Onopko's still got 109 caps under his belt and a wealth of experience in Spanish football – that's something to be proud of! 😊

🤯 can't believe what they told him, 28 games for Barcelona and they thought he wasn't fit looking enough! 😂 that's just crazy, and it makes you wonder about the club's priorities back then. Onopko played so many games and achieved so much more with smaller clubs, like Oviedo and Vallecano. I feel bad for him that his looks didn't matter as much to Barcelona at that time... 🤔

🤔 I mean, think about it... a physical appearance clause in a transfer deal? That's just fishy, innit? Like, what other clubs do that? And to be deemed "ugly" by the coaching staff? No way, man... that sounds like some shady stuff. I'm not saying Onopko didn't deserve it or anything, but come on! FC Barcelona's aesthetics committee is a whole different story right there... 🤷‍♂️ Maybe they were just trying to cover up something else? Like, maybe Onopko did have a connection to the club, but his appearance was just an excuse? I don't know, man... it's all too weird. 😏

I'm literally shook by this story 🤯. It's wild that a club like FC Barcelona, which is all about being the best, would make a decision based on someone's physical appearance. I mean, what even is the criteria here? Is it just about how cute you look in your tracksuit? 😂 The fact that Onopko was told he was "ugly" by a member of the coaching staff is just heartbreaking. It's like they thought his athletic skills weren't enough to make up for not fitting their super-specific aesthetic standards.

It's crazy how much impact this can have on someone's career and self-esteem. Onopko's reaction though, I love it 💪. He's all like "I'm good, I'll just focus on my game" and he went on to achieve so much more than if he had joined Barcelona. Sometimes you've got to remind yourself that your worth isn't defined by what others think of you. 🙌

Man, this is crazy! 🤯 Think about it, if you're a 25-year-old player with skills for days, but the coach says you're "ugly", that's like saying someone's got talent but they don't fit their party's aesthetic 🎉😂. What does that even mean? Is it not enough to just be good at what you do?

And let's talk about how this played out in a different way back then, when the club was worried more about image and less about actual performance 🤷‍♂️. I'm no expert, but I think that's some elitist nonsense right there 👀.

Onopko's all good with his decision though, and I get it, if you don't feel included or valued by a team, it's hard to keep going in that environment 💔. But for those who did make it into the Big Time, like Barcelona, what's their story? How do they deal with people saying they're not "fit" for the club?

This whole thing just got me thinking about how beauty is subjective and what really matters is the football itself ⚽💪

OMG u can't believe dis!!! 🤯 Like Victor Onopko almost played 4 FC Barcelona but dey didn't want him cuz he's not " attractive" 😂😳 I mean who cares about dat stuff? He went on to have an AMAZING career & scored goals in La Liga 🏆💥 And he even got 109 caps for Russia 🇷🇺🔵♂️ what more could u ask for? 😎 Anywayz, it's defo sad he didn't get the chance 2 play @ Barca but I'm totes proud of him 4 all his hard work & dedication 💪😊

I cant believe this 😲 Onopko's story is crazy! I mean, who gets told they're not good enough just because of their looks? 🤷‍♂️ It makes me wonder what other players have gone through the same thing... was it always like that in football or was it more of a Barcelona thing? 💡 Also, can you imagine being on Oviedo's radar and having Atleti Madrid sniffing around, only to be told nope, you're not pretty enough 😂. I guess that's just part of the game now...

OMG 🤯...can u believe this? They discriminated him based on how he looked 😱...FC Barcelona's aesthetics committee or whatever they call it, who cares about looks when it comes to talent? I mean, Victor Onopko was an amazing player and scored 7 goals in La Liga, that's no joke 🤔...and they told him he's "ugly" 💁‍♂️...ridiculous! And what's with this deal he signed with Oviedo, like a trap or something? 🤑 They must've been trying to sabotage his career from the start...and of course, it all falls into place now that he's speaking out about it 👀...I mean, I'm not saying it's true but if it is, we gotta stand with Onopko and call out this nonsense 💪

I cant even imagine how tough it must've been for him back then 😩. Being told u r not good enough just cuz u dont fit the club's idea of 'pretty' is literally heartbreaking 💔. I mean, who do they think they are, deciding what's good 4 a footballer? It's all about the game, right? 🤦‍♂️ Not about how cute or tall u r. Oviedo's lucky to have had him in the first place 🙌. He went on 2 achieve so much more than any of us probably ever will 💪

I'm totally stoked that Victor Onopko is speaking out about this crazy story 🤣 but at the same time, I'm like, what's the point of even sharing this info? Like, isn't it already known that FC Barcelona wouldn't take him because he wasn't good enough on the pitch or something? And now we're just gonna waste our time with all these details about how he looked and stuff 🤷‍♂️ but seriously though, I feel bad for Onopko, 'cause if one of those fancy-pants coaches actually said that to him in person... that's some messed up stuff 😒. But on the flip side, I'm glad he made the right choice for himself and played for smaller clubs instead of getting hurt by some stupid clause or whatever 🙄

I'm shocked that FC Barcelona's aesthetics committee held such a narrow-minded view back then 🤯👀. I mean, Victor Onopko was still a talented player with 109 caps for Russia and seven goals in La Liga. His physical appearance shouldn't have mattered when it came to his football skills 😊. It's sad that he was overlooked due to something as superficial as looks. Maybe if they had looked at his playing record instead of his face 🙄, he would've joined the Dream Team era.

I'm so done with clubs making decisions based on someone's appearance 🙄. Like, what even is that? Victor Onopko was a talented player who could've made a huge impact at FC Barcelona, but because of how he looked, they were like "nah, we'll pass". And to be honest, it's not just Onopko - there are so many people out there who have been judged on their looks and not given a chance based on that alone. It's time for clubs to focus more on talent and less on aesthetics 💪.

And can we talk about how ridiculous the clause was in his Oviedo deal? Like, "if another club offers you one more dollar, you're out"? That's just crazy 🤣. Onopko had some amazing opportunities, but because of that weird clause, he ended up playing for smaller clubs instead. It's all so... 90s 💥.

🤔 This is wild, right? Like, who even cares about your physical appearance before you even get the job done on the pitch? It's just weird that some dude told him he was ugly and that's why he wasn't good enough for FC Barcelona... idk, maybe they had a specific look in mind or something 😂. Anyways, Onopko seems like a decent guy who took it all in stride, which I respect. His career story is actually pretty inspiring, even if it didn't go the way he wanted with Barcelona 💪

🤦‍♂️ Can you imagine? Some dude gets told he's not good enough because he doesn't fit the "Barça look" 😂 what's wrong with being different, right? I mean, Victor Onopko had some great years in Spanish football and scored goals for Russia too! 🏆 109 caps is no joke! And who knows, maybe that's exactly why FC Barcelona passed on him - because they were worried he'd bring some new style to the team 😂. Anyway, it's cool that he doesn't regret his decisions and is proud of what he achieved in Spain. 👍

🤷‍♂️ I mean, can you believe it? A football player was almost given up on because of how he looks 🤢. It's just not fair to a young person who's trying to make a career out of their passion. The fact that the coaching staff said he was "ugly" and wouldn't be good enough for the team is just ridiculous 💁‍♂️. I wish people could look beyond physical appearance and focus on what really matters – skills and talent 🏈. It's not like Onopko didn't have a great career, scoring 7 goals in La Liga and playing for Russia! He should be celebrated for his achievements, not judged by how he looks 👍.

🙏 You know what's crazy? Football clubs are like that sometimes. Like, who cares about looks when you've got talent, right? I mean, Victor Onopko had a solid career, scored some goals and played with the Russian national team... what more do you want from someone? And to be honest, it's kinda funny that he was told he was "ugly" by one of the coaching staff. Like, did they really think that would stop him from achieving his dreams? I'm sure Onopko's got better things on his mind than trying to fit some arbitrary beauty standard 🤷‍♂️. Anyway, it's great to see him looking back on his career with pride and not regretting anything. That's what counts, right?
