Erin Cuthbert: Chelsea, change and learning to be more 'direct'

Scotland forward Erin Cuthbert has revealed the importance of learning to be more "direct" on the pitch, a trait she believes has been crucial in her development as a player. Speaking exclusively to BBC Sport's Emma Sanders, Cuthbert attributes this newfound directness to former Chelsea coach Emma Hayes.

The 21-year-old winger credits Hayes with instilling in her the value of decisive action and swift decision-making during games. "I think that's something I've learned from Emma," Cuthbert said. "Being able to make quick decisions on the pitch, not thinking too much about it, just going for it."

However, Cuthbert believes that learning to be more direct wasn't always easy. She recalled a story about her mother educating her on how to use the tumble dryer when she was younger.

"When I was young, my mum taught me how to use the tumble dryer," Cuthbert said with a smile. "It's funny because it sounds silly now, but at the time, I didn't know how to do it. She just sat down and showed me how to do it step by step. And that's what I think I've done with football too – taken things one step at a time, learning from people like Emma Hayes."

Cuthbert's journey to becoming a more direct player has been nothing short of remarkable. From playing for her local club in Scotland to joining the Chelsea Women's Academy and eventually making her debut for the first team.

Her rapid rise to prominence has earned her recognition as one of the top young players in the women's game, with many pundits hailing her as a future star of Scottish football.

However, Cuthbert remains humble and grounded despite the attention surrounding her. She attributes her success to hard work and dedication, both on and off the pitch.

"It's not just about being direct on the pitch," Cuthbert said. "It's also about being confident in your ability to do things. And that's something I've worked on a lot."

With Chelsea currently competing for league titles and international tournaments, Cuthbert will be crucial in determining the success of Scotland and her club this season.

As she continues to grow as a player, one thing is clear: Erin Cuthbert has learned to be more direct – and it's served her well.

⭐️ "The only way to do great work is to love what you do." I think that's true for Erin Cuthbert, she loves playing football and it shows in her game 🏆💖

I remember when I was a kid, we used to have to do our homework on the bus ride home from school 🚌. Now everyone expects their kids to be tech-savvy and learn how to code by the time they're 10 🤖. It's like, what happened to learning stuff just for the sake of it? 😊

And Erin Cuthbert is a great example of someone who's learned from experience, not just online tutorials 📚. She credits her former coach Emma Hayes with teaching her how to be more direct on the pitch, and that's something you can't learn from YouTube 💻.

But what I love about Erin is she's humble and doesn't let all the attention go to her head 🙏. She just focuses on working hard and being confident in her abilities. That's something we can all learn from, especially parents who are always pushing their kids to be more, more, more 🤯.

It's funny how life comes full circle, though - Erin's mum taught her how to use the tumble dryer when she was younger, just like Erin teaches young players about being direct on the pitch 😂. You never know where life is going to take you, right? 👍

😂🔥 I'm low-key obsessed with Erin Cuthbert right now 🤩! She's like the ultimate hype rider - from playing for her local club to making a name for herself in the Chelsea Women's Academy, this girl's got talent pouring out of every pore 💪! And let's talk about Emma Hayes, she's like the OG coach, bringing out the best in Erin and helping her develop that all-important directness on the pitch 🤝. I'm loving how confident Erin is too, it's clear she's worked hard to get where she is 🙌. Bring on the league titles and international tournaments, I'm ready to see what this girl can do! ⚽🔥

🤩 I'm loving how Erin Cuthbert is taking credit for learning from Emma Hayes 🙌, like her mum teaching her how to use the tumble dryer 😂... it's so relatable! I think what's cool about this story is how she's taken these skills and applied them to football, one step at a time. It just goes to show that with hard work and dedication (and maybe some good coaching 🤓), you can develop into an amazing player. And I'm loving her humility about it all - she's still down-to-earth despite the hype around her. Can't wait to see what this season brings for Scotland and Chelsea! 👏

I'm so down for Erin Cuthbert being all about taking action on the pitch. I mean, who doesn't love watching a player just go for it? 🏃‍♀️ It's like they're saying, "Screw thinking too much, let's do this!" 💪 But what's really cool is that she credits Emma Hayes with teaching her that way of playing. Like, if you can learn from someone and then apply those lessons to a sport as physically demanding as football? That's just top-notch coaching skills right there 👏.

And I love how she uses the tumble dryer story to explain her growth as a player. It's like, we've all been there with our parents teaching us something new and being like "okay, cool, got it" but really not understanding until they show you step by step 🤣. But seriously, Cuthbert's journey from playing for local clubs in Scotland to making her debut for Chelsea is pretty inspiring. She's a total role model for young players everywhere, especially those who are just starting out and trying to figure things out 💫.

For me, the key takeaway here is that it's not just about being direct on the pitch, but also about having confidence in your abilities. And Cuthbert's all about that life 🌟. So yeah, I'm rooting for her big time! 👍

🔥 I'm loving Erin Cuthbert's attitude! She's not afraid to take risks and trust her instincts on the pitch. And honestly, who can blame her? Being "direct" is all about confidence and having faith in your abilities. It's not just about being reckless, it's about being bold and taking charge. 🔥💪

I also love how she credits Emma Hayes with teaching her this valuable lesson. It's clear that Cuthbert has learned from a great coach and is now passing on those same lessons to others. And let's be real, who wouldn't want to learn from someone as successful as Emma Hayes? 😎

But what I think really sets Cuthbert apart is her humility. She knows she's not perfect and is willing to work on her game every day. That's the kind of mentality that'll take you far in football (and life, tbh). Keep doing you, Erin! 💁‍♀️

I'm loving Erin Cuthbert's refreshing approach to football 🌟! She's not afraid to take risks and make quick decisions on the pitch, which is super inspiring for young players looking to break into the game. I think it's awesome that she credits Emma Hayes with teaching her the importance of being more direct - it just goes to show how much of an impact a good coach can have 🤝.

What I find really admirable about Cuthbert is that she doesn't put too much pressure on herself, despite all the attention surrounding her. She's got a great attitude and acknowledges that hard work and dedication are key to success 💪. Plus, it's hilarious how she compares learning to be more direct to using a tumble dryer - so relatable! 😂

Erin Cuthbert seems like a super cool and down-to-earth person 🤗. I mean, who doesn't love their mum showing them how to use the tumble dryer lol. But seriously, it's great that she's learning from Emma Hayes and developing her game with Chelsea. Being direct on the pitch is all about confidence and taking risks, which is something we can all learn from. And it's awesome to see Cuthbert being humble and grounded despite all the attention - she sounds like a real role model! 😊

OMG, I'm loving Erin Cuthbert's vibe right now! 🤩 She's literally on fire on the pitch and her story about learning from Emma Hayes is SO inspiring 🙌. Like, who wouldn't want to learn from a legendary coach like that? 😍 The way she talks about being direct and decisive is giving me major motivation to step up my game too 💪! And can we talk about how humble and grounded she is despite all the hype? I mean, goals girl! 🎉 #ErinCuthbert #WomenInFootball #DirectAndDecisive

🤩 just watched erin cuthbert's interview with bbc sport and i gotta say i'm loving her vibe 💁‍♀️ she's so humble and grounded despite all the attention she's getting 🙌 and i love how she credits former chelsea coach emma hayes for helping her develop this "direct" style on the pitch 💪 it's like she's saying that being confident in your abilities is just as important as making quick decisions on the pitch 🤝 anyway, can't wait to see her play out on the field and crush it with scotland ⚽https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52415146

OMG 🤯, I'm loving this chick Erin Cuthbert 🙌, she's like totally killing it on the pitch right now 🔥! I mean, who wouldn't want to learn from Emma Hayes 🤝, the coach is literally a genius 😂. And that story about her mum teaching her how to use the tumble dryer is literally the cutest thing ever 🤣, I'm dead 💀.

But seriously tho 👊, it's so inspiring to see someone who's worked hard and dedicated themselves to their craft, and now they're reaping the rewards 🏆. Cuthbert's confidence is contagious, she's like a ray of sunshine on the pitch ☀️, and I'm here for it 💖.

And can we talk about how humble she remains despite all the attention? Like, girl bye 👯‍♀️, you're killing the game and owning every moment on that pitch 💁‍♀️. Bring on the league titles and international tournaments, Cuthbert's got this! 🎉

She's like a dryer cycle - once you figure it out, life gets easier 🔄💨. Learning from coaches and mentors is key, but confidence and humility are just as important 👍.

I'm so stoked for Erin Cuthbert 🤩! I mean, can you believe how far she's come? From learning to use the tumble dryer with her mum to becoming one of the top young players in the game 😂. It just goes to show that if you're willing to learn and take things one step at a time, anything is possible. And it's awesome that she's got such an amazing coach like Emma Hayes who helped her develop this "direct" style 🙌. I think it's really cool that she's staying humble and grounded despite all the attention, too 🙏. She's just being herself and working hard to get better – that's something we can all learn from 💪.

ugh i dont get why bc sport is still using those old website design 🙄 its like they forgot about mobile devices altogether lol what a shame. cant even easily share the link on my phone because of how clunky the website is 😩 anyways back to erin cuthbert, she's def making waves in the football world and i love her no-nonsense attitude towards football 🤸‍♀️ being direct on the pitch is key to success and it sounds like emma hayes taught her that well 👏. btw can someone please explain to me why bc sport still uses those outdated video player controls? so annoying 🙄

I don't know if being "direct" on the pitch is really that hard to learn 🤔. I mean, you'd think it's just about charging at the ball and hoping for the best, but nope, Erin Cuthbert says it takes coaching and practice to develop those skills 💪. And yeah, Emma Hayes is a pretty good coach if she can teach Cuthbert to make quick decisions on the pitch 😊. But what really gets me is when Cuthbert compares learning football to using a tumble dryer 🤣. Like, okay, I get it, your mum taught you how to use the machine, but that's not exactly the same as learning how to win a championship ⚽️. Still, I'm glad she's having success and all, just don't think being direct is some super rare talent 😊.
