Eric Lu: Schubert Impromptus album review – mature and mesmerising

Eric Lu's latest Schubert Impromptus release reveals a maturity and introspection that belies his relatively young age as a pianist. The eight Impromptus are some of Franz Schubert's most profound works, and Lu approaches them with an unassuming confidence that is nothing short of mesmerizing.

From the opening notes of Op 90 No 1, it's clear that Lu has spent considerable time studying Schubert's musical structures, allowing him to draw the listener in with the scope of his phrasing. His playing can be weightier than some, but he achieves a sense of seamless flow by turning corners smoothly and allowing dramatic passages to unfold organically from what has come before.

One of Lu's greatest strengths lies in his ability to capture the intricate detail that underpins Schubert's music, creating an almost hypnotic effect as time seems to stand still. While his performances may not yet be distinctive enough to set him apart from other pianists, they are undeniably convincing and demonstrate a serious level of musical maturity.

In terms of overall impact, Lu's Schubert Impromptus is a solid addition to any piano collection. It's not quite the standout release that would catapult him to the top of the competition heap, but it does cement his status as a rising talent worth watching in the years to come. With this latest release, Lu proves himself to be a pianist who can command and captivate with ease, delivering performances that are both mature and utterly compelling.

For me, it's all about those little details he picks up on, like the way Schubert uses phrasing to create tension and release 🎶. It's what sets Lu apart from other pianists in my opinion – he's not trying to reinvent the wheel, but just bringing his own unique perspective to the table 💪. I don't usually comment but I was listening to Eric Lu's Schubert Impromptus and it got me thinking - all these young pianists are doing amazing things right now 🤯! Like, we were just talking about Lang Lang a few years ago and now there's Eric Lu and he's already pushing the boundaries of what's possible with classical music. It's like they're speaking my language, you know? 💬 The way he weaves emotions into every note is just so captivating... I'm hooked from start to finish every time 🎵.

I'm so not impressed with Eric Lu's latest Schubert Impromptus release 🙄. I mean, don't get me wrong, he's got some good moments but overall it feels like he's just going through the motions. The flow is a bit too perfect for my liking - where's the excitement in that? And yeah, he can catch all those tiny details that make Schubert's music so great, but does that really mean he's the next big thing? I don't think so 😐.

I'm also kinda bored by how "mature" and "introspective" everyone's making him out to be. Like, hello, it's just piano playing! You can be good at it without needing to make some grand philosophical statement about your music 🤔. And have you listened to his other stuff? I've got a feeling he might not be as deep as everyone makes him out to be...
