Erdogan’s political fate may be determined by Turkey’s Kurds | CNN

Turkey's pro-Kurdish party, the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), has emerged as a key player in the country's upcoming election, potentially tipping the balance to unseat President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a significant move, the HDP announced last month that it would not field its own presidential candidate, allowing its supporters to vote for Erdogan's main rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu of the Republican People's Party (CHP). The decision was seen as a strategic play by the HDP, which has been under pressure from the Turkish government.

The HDP's influence is crucial in determining the outcome of the election, given its significant support base among Turkey's Kurdish population. Kurds make up between 15% and 20% of the country's population, making them one of the largest minority groups.

However, the HDP's position is precarious due to a court case that could potentially close it down for suspected ties to the militant Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Despite this threat, analysts believe the party may still be able to influence the outcome of the election.

Analysts say the decision not to field its own candidate allows the HDP's supporters to vote for Kilicdaroglu, Erdogan's main rival. The HDP's former leader, Selahattin Demirtas, has been in prison for nearly seven years and is seen as an influential figure.

The Turkish government has been trying to link the HDP to the PKK but has so far failed to prove a real connection. Many Kurdish voters have recently left Erdogan's camp, creating space for the opposition.

A post-Erdogan Turkey may give some breathing space to the Kurds and Kurdish-dominated parties in Turkey. The HDP's leader, deputy co-chair Hisyar Ozsoy, said his party understands what’s at stake, not only for Turkey's Kurds but for all its minorities.

The HDP is aware of its responsibility here and role, Ozsoy added. The party knows it is in a kingmaker position.

I'm so done with the HDP's decision to let Kilicdaroglu run as their proxy 🤦‍♂️...I mean, what even is that? It's like they're trying to sacrifice their own interests for the sake of "unity" and "stability"...give me a break! 👀 The real question is, are they doing this because they actually believe it'll help them win or just because Erdogan told them to? 🤝 Either way, I think it's super suspicious. And don't even get me started on the whole court case thing...if they're really that concerned about being "closed down", why not take a stand and fight for what's right instead of playing it safe? 😒

omg i just can't even rn i'm like totally invested in the turkish election situation 🤯, you guys know how passionate i am about politics lol. so like the peoples democratic party (hdp) deciding not to field their own candidate for president is def a game changer ⚖️, it's like they're playing both sides against each other and i am here for it.

i'm from new york btw and my fam is mostly turkish descent 🤗, so this whole situation hits close to home. my grandma has been keeping up with the news and she's like "don't trust the government" you know how that is lol.

anywayz, if the hdp can swing some votes towards kilicdaroglu, it could totally be the key to taking down erdogan 🤯. i mean, Erdogan's got some major skeletons in his closet and this election might just be the opportunity for him to get taken down a peg 👊.

and tbh, i feel bad for selahattin demirtas who's been stuck in prison for like 7 years already 😔, it's not fair that he can't even participate in this election. the hdp's decision to let their supporters vote for kilicdaroglu is kinda a big deal, especially considering the whole pkk connection 🤥.

i'm still trying to figure out what will happen next 🤔, but one thing's for sure - i'll be glued to my screen waiting for those election results 📺.

man I'm so hyped about this election 🤩 I mean think about it if the HDP doesn't field their own candidate it's like they're saying we trust these other parties to represent us 👊 and that's dope, but at the same time you can't help feeling a little anxious about what the future holds for Turkey's Kurds and minorities 😟 Erdogan's been super harsh on them in the past so I'm curious to see how this all plays out 🤔

omg I'm so down with this move by the HDP 🤩, they're like total game changers! I mean Erdogan's been in power for ages and he's got some major skeletons in his closet, but if the Kurds can get their voice heard now it could be a total shake up 😲. And let's be real, Kilicdaroglu is like nothin' compared to Erdogan, the dude's like a whole different person 👀. I'm also loving the fact that the HDP's leader, Ozsoy, is all about being responsible and aware of their role, it's so refreshing 🙌. This could be the start of somethin big, especially if the Turkish government finally starts treatin' everyone fairly and not just Erdogan 🤞. Bring on a post-Erdogan Turkey, I'm all in 👏

omg this election thingy is gonna be so juicy 🔥😂 I'm thinking the HDP's strategic move to not field their own candidate might actually work in their favour 🤔. Erdogan's been getting some bad vibes from his own people and some Kurdish voters are like "peace out" 🌪️, maybe this gives the opposition a chance? 🙏

🤔 the hdp's decision to play neutral is kinda interesting, i mean they're basically handing over their chances to kilicdaroglu but at the same time not giving up their power or influence. it's like they're saying "we trust our people enough that they'll make the right choice" and also not wanting to risk everything if the gov keeps trying to shut them down 🚫. i think this is a smart move, it shows they're willing to take a calculated risk for the sake of their party and their people 💡.

I think the HDP's decision to back Kilicdaroglu could be a game-changer in this election 🤔. I mean, Erdogan's main rival has got some serious momentum going for him, and if the Kurds are able to come together behind Kilicdaroglu, it's hard to see how Erdogan can overcome that kind of opposition 💪.

But at the same time, there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the HDP. That court case could be a major blow, and if they're unable to prove their innocence, it's possible we might see the party get shut down for good 🚫. Which would be devastating, not just for the Kurds but for Turkish democracy as a whole.

The thing that I find particularly interesting is how this election has the potential to create space for Kurdish-dominated parties in Turkey 💡. It's been a really tough road for them, what with Erdogan's government trying to suppress their rights and representation all these years. But if Kilicdaroglu wins, it could be a major turning point for Turkish politics 🔄.

The HDP leader, Ozsoy, is spot on when he says his party understands the stakes here 🔥. They're in a kingmaker position, which means they've got the power to make or break the opposition's chances of winning. It's a huge responsibility, but I think they're up for the task 🙏.

😊 the hdp's decision to step aside as a candidate candidate 🤔 is actually kinda smart, tbh. they're playing both sides now 🔄 by letting their supporters vote for kilicdaroglu, but still keeping an eye on the bigger picture 🌆. it's all about maximizing their influence and staying relevant in turkish politics 💪. plus, who knows, maybe a post-erdogan turkey will bring some much-needed change to the country 🕊️. i think it's great that hisyar ozsoy is taking responsibility for the hdp's actions, being honest about what's at stake for all of turkey's minorities 👍

I don't think this decision by the HDP to support Erdogan's main rival makes sense at all 🤔. I mean, they're basically giving up their own chance to win, right? It's like they want to lose on purpose 😒. And what's with this court case that could close them down? That just shows how desperate they are to stay in power 💼.

I don't buy the idea that Erdogan's going down anyway 🙄. He's been in power for too long, and he knows exactly what he's doing. The HDP's trying to play both sides here, but it's all just a bit of clever politics 🤡. Still, you can't deny that this election is gonna be super interesting... especially if the Kurds end up having more say in Turkey's future 🌈.

And btw, I'm not convinced by Hisyar Ozsoy's claims about the HDP being aware of its "responsibility" and "role"... sounds like some PR spin to me 📢. But hey, maybe they're just trying to be all selfless and stuff 😊.

I'm still thinking about this whole thing with the HDP and Erdogan... 🤔 They're playing a game where they let their supporters vote for Kilicdaroglu, but is that really a win for democracy or just another way to manipulate the system? I mean, think about it - if the Turkish government wants to discredit the HDP, they can use this court case as an excuse. And what's with the PKK thing? It's like they're trying to create a narrative where the HDP is tied to some militant group... 🚫 Not buying it. The Kurds have been feeling underrepresented for ages, and now we're seeing them get a chance to have their say in the election. But will that lead to real change or just more of the same? I'm not convinced.

🤔 just watched the latest vids on YouTube about turkey's election and I gotta say, Erdogan's got some major opposition now 🙌 Kemal Kilicdaroglu's got the people behind him and if the HDP can bring their supporters to vote for him, it could be a game changer 👊 but you know, the gov is always playing dirty games with the Kurds, doesn't trust them one bit 😒

I think the HDP's decision to support Kilicdaroglu might just be the break Erdogan needs 🤔. As someone who's been following this election closely, I have to say that the HDP's influence can't be overstated. Those 15-20% Kurds make up a huge chunk of Turkey's population, and if they turn out in full force for Kilicdaroglu, it could be game over for Erdogan 💥. Of course, we all know there's some uncertainty around this whole situation - that court case looming over the HDP is like a dark cloud 🌫️ - but I genuinely believe Ozsoy and co are on top of it 😊.

I'm gonna say this... if the HDP doesn't play by their own rules, they're gonna get shut down or destroyed by Erdogan's crew 💔. I mean, come on, the gov is already trying to link them to the PKK, and now they're basically saying "hey, we're not running a presidential candidate"... sounds like a total cop-out 🤣. The Kurds are the largest minority group in Turkey and they deserve way more representation than this 🤦‍♂️. If the HDP really wants to make a difference, they should be standing strong against Erdogan's dirty tricks, but I guess that would require some serious guts 💪.

I gotta say, this whole thing with the HDP and Erdogan is wild 🤯. Like, imagine one party basically giving up on running their own candidate and just letting others do it for them? It's like they're playing a high-stakes game of chess, hoping to take down the king without getting their hands dirty 😅.

And I'm all about that post-Erdogan Turkey vibe – maybe the Kurds will finally get some respect and representation 🤞. But at the same time, you gotta wonder if the HDP is just trying to butter Erdogan up in order to get more power themselves? It's a tricky dance, for sure 💃.

One thing's for sure though: the HDP knows how to use their influence to make some noise 💥. I'm keeping an eye on this election – it's gonna be interesting to see how all these players shake out 🎭.

idk why the turkish gov would do that 🤔 its like they're playing with fire over there, kurdish people arent gonna just forget what's been done to them 😡 but on the other hand i can see why the hdp made this move, gotta keep the vote count up and all that 🤑 it's a tricky situation and only time will tell how things go down in turkey

I just read about the Turkish election and man, this stuff is getting outta hand 🤯. Erdogan's main rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, got his chance to shine thanks to the HDP not fielding their own candidate... meanwhile, the HDP's former leader Selahattin Demirtas has been locked up for SEVEN YEARS in prison 🕰️! Can you imagine? The Turkish government is trying to shut down the HDP but it looks like they're just fueling the fire 🔥. The Kurds are a major player here, making up 15-20% of Turkey's population... that's a lot of influence 💸. But what's next? Will the opposition be able to keep the peace or is this gonna get even more intense? 🤔 This post-Erdogan Turkey stuff could bring some much-needed breathing space for the Kurds, but at what cost?

I'm low-key excited about the potential shift in Turkish politics 🤩. It's crazy to think that the HDP could be the one to bring down Erdogan, who's been kinda notorious for his authoritarian vibes 😒. If the HDP's supporters are able to vote for Kilicdaroglu instead of their own presidential candidate, it could really impact the election outcome 📊. And let's not forget, Kurds make up like 15-20% of Turkey's population, so they're definitely a key player in this whole thing 👥. It'll be interesting to see how things play out, especially with the HDP potentially taking on a kingmaker role 💪. Maybe we'll finally see some change in Turkey? 🤞

man this turkey election stuff is wild lol Erdogan's got some major competition now 🤯 kilicdaroglu might just take him down but lets be real the kurdish vote is like 20% of the population so if they don't show up for kilicdaroglu it's game over 💔 meanwhile the hdp is all like "hey we're not fielding a candidate but you can still vote for us" what a clever move imo 👀 and if Erdogan wins he'll probably just try to crack down on the kurdish community even more which would be super sus 🤕

🤔 This election in Turkey is gonna be super interesting to watch. I think the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) making this move might just give Erdogan's main rival, Kilicdaroglu, an unexpected boost 🚀. The HDP's influence among Kurdish voters could make all the difference, especially if they can keep the PKK connection thing off their backs 😬. It's crazy to think about, but maybe a post-Erdogan Turkey will finally give some room for Kurds and other minority groups to breathe 👥. If the HDP plays it smart, they might just be able to tip the balance in Kilicdaroglu's favor ⚖️. One thing's for sure, this election is gonna be a wild ride 🎢!
