Doctor Who lives on! But who will be the new Time Lord – and is it goodbye to Russell T Davies?

BBC Confirms End of Disney+ Partnership for Doctor Who as New Series Announced

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has revealed that it will be ending its partnership with Disney+ to stream Doctor Who after this year's Christmas special. The news comes as the long-running sci-fi series is set to return to BBC One in 2026, but with a revamped production schedule and budget.

A report released earlier this week stated that the show's international streaming deal had ended, leaving fans wondering about the future of the beloved character. There was no confirmation on who would play the Doctor next year or if Russell T Davies would be taking over as showrunner again.

The departure of Ncuti Gatwa, the 15th Doctor, has been a subject of speculation among fans. It is rumored that he briefly regenerated into Billie Piper's character in the final episode, "The Reality War," raising questions about her potential return to the role. However, Piper was not credited as "The Doctor" in the episode, leaving many to wonder if she will be taking on the iconic part once again.

Russell T Davies has written the upcoming Christmas special, and the BBC is eager to reassure fans that the show is not going anywhere. The corporation has announced plans for a new series, but no further details have been disclosed yet.

The news comes as a blow to Doctor Who's production team, which had enjoyed a significant boost in budget thanks to its partnership with Disney+. However, this deal did not propel the show to global streaming success that both parties may have hoped for.

The BBC has faced criticism from fans and critics alike regarding the show's dwindling viewership. The most recent series saw episodes pulling in fewer than 2 million viewers live on BBC One, a historic low for the long-running program.

As the production team moves forward with new plans, they will need to address issues such as production difficulties and controversy surrounding the departure of Ncuti Gatwa. Additionally, the corporation is exploring options for an animated version of Doctor Who aimed at preschool audiences, which would run independently from the main show on CBeebies.

With a revamped budget and renewed commitment from the BBC, fans will be eager to see what the future holds for this beloved sci-fi series.

🤔 just read that the BBC is ending their partnership with Disney+ for Doctor Who 🚫👋 guess all those rumors about Ncuti Gatwa's departure are true 🙅‍♂️ also, no new details on who'll play the next doc yet 🤞 but one thing's for sure, Russell T Davies is back to write that Christmas special 💡 and the BBC is revamping production with a new budget 💸📊 fans are gonna be super curious about what's happening next ⏱️ hope they can get it right this time 👀

I'm surprised they're cutting ties with Disney+, tbh 🤔. I mean, I get that the show's not exactly setting streaming records, but can't we get some more reliable numbers on viewership? Like, what's the exact number of fans who are binging each episode? We need concrete data to back up these claims 💡.

And what's with the production team being so tight-lipped about Ncuti Gatwa's departure? Are they hiding something? 🤫 I'm all for drama, but not when it comes to our fave sci-fi show. The BBC should be more transparent about this stuff.

Oh, and an animated version of Doctor Who aimed at preschoolers? 🤷‍♂️ I mean, I love a good animated episode as much as the next fan, but can we please prioritize the main series first? It's been around for decades, after all. Let's not forget what made it great in the first place! 💥

ugh, another one of these 'revamped' ideas 🙄... like that's gonna magically fix the show's viewership issues 📺💔... anyway, i'm kinda stoked Ncuti Gatwa got to leave the role - he was getting too old for his own good 😂... and can we please just get some actual new Doctors instead of rehashing the same old characters? 🤣... billie pierre's return would be awesome tho! 👀

I'm so bummed about Disney+ leaving Doctor Who 🤔. I remember watching it back in my day with my friends and we'd all gather around the telly on Saturday nights, waiting for new episodes to come out. It was such a big deal! And now it's going to be on BBC One again? That sounds so much better, you know? Less cluttered and more nostalgic 📺. I'm not sure about this new animated version thing though, I mean, can you imagine the 10th Doctor as a cartoon character? 😂. But seriously, I think the show needs to get back to its roots and focus on telling some proper stories, rather than just trying to make it appealing to the lowest common denominator. I'm excited to see what Russell T Davies comes up with next 🎉.

🤔 I think it's pretty crazy that Disney+ is outta the Doctor Who game, ya know? It was like, they were all hyped up about having the show on their platform, but it didn't quite live up to the hype 🤷‍♂️. Now we're gonna see what the BBC can do with a fresh start and new budget 💸. I'm curious if Billie Piper is gonna come back as the Doctor – that would be wild 😮! And I feel like the show needs some kinda shake-up, you know? Maybe this new series will bring some excitement to the long-running program 🎉. On a side note, an animated version of Doctor Who for preschoolers sounds interesting... could be cool 👶

😊 just found out that Disney+ is no longer partnering with BBC for Doctor Who 🤔 it's kinda surprising considering how much hype they had around it initially 🚀 guess you can never predict these things and now it looks like the show will be going back to its roots on BBC One 👍 hope this new chapter will bring some much-needed changes to the series 😃

omg whats happenin 2 doctor who!!! i mean i no dey support bb1 wen it come 2 doctor who but dis 4real is sad 🤕 cant believe dey end partnership wit disney+. u think wot happn 2 ncuti gatwa next? & billie piper? my heart go out 2 rupert devine hes my boy ❤️ i trust dat russell t davies bring back da magic 😎 & cant wait 4 new series in 2026. maybe dey go make animated show 4 preschool kids & make me look bad lol 😂

🤔 just heard the news about doctor who leaving disney+ and i gotta say, i'm kinda surprised they're ending it there? like, dont get me wrong, the new series is gonna be awesome and all 🎉 but a part of me wishes they could've milked that disney+ deal for like another 2-3 years lol. and omg what happened to ncuti gatwa tho? 🤯 his regeneration into billie pierre's character was lowkey epic, but now i'm shipping him and the doctor again 💔😂 anyway, gotta stay tuned for the new series, cant wait to see how it all goes down! 👍

the thing with disney+ taking over doctor who is kinda weird 🤔... they only got that deal 'cause the show wasn't doing super well on bbc one anyway... and now they're ending it? 😐 seems like a pretty abrupt decision considering they already cut ncuti gatwa from the final ep... and russell t davies was pretty vocal about how much he wanted to get back behind the show's reins 🤓 i'm not sure what to make of this whole thing, but i do know one thing - fans are gonna be watching closely to see how it all shakes out 💡

i think its gonna be great to see doctor who come back stronger than ever 🚀👍! new series in 2026 is gonna bring fresh faces and exciting storylines - hopefully they'll address the dwindling viewership issue too 📊💡. its also awesome that there's talk of an animated version on cbbebies for preschoolers - kids love doctor who just as much as us old-school fans do 😆👧. russell t davies is back at the helm and he's got some big shoes to fill, but i trust him to bring something special 🎯. lets get ready for an epic return of the doctor! 💥

man i feel bad for doctor who fans 🤕 they've been through so much already with ncuti gatwa's departure & now the disney+ deal is ending 🎉 yeah it wasnt a huge success but i think the bbc should just own the show & not rely on streaming services to make it work 📺 they have the resources & history to pull off something amazing. let's hope russell t davies can bring back the magic 💫

omg 🤯 i'm kinda sad it's ending but also super stoked that it's gonna get a refresh 💥 can't wait to see what russell t davies has in store for us this christmas 🎄 and an animated show on cbeebies sounds like a great way to bring the doctor who universe to new fans 🤓 i mean, let's be real, 2 million viewers is still a pretty solid number for a show that's been around for so long 🙏 fingers crossed they can get the production team back on track and make some magic happen 🧙‍♂️

I'm kinda bummed about Disney+ leaving Doctor Who 🤔... it's like, when we're invested in something, don't we deserve some stability? I mean, the show's been around for ages, and we've seen so many characters come and go. It's weird how attached we get to these people, you know? But I guess that's what makes Doctor Who so special - it's all about regeneration, new beginnings... 🌟

I wonder if the BBC is trying to make a statement by going back to basics on this one 👀. Maybe they're trying to strip away some of the extra baggage and get back to what made the show great in the first place: the storytelling. It's funny how we can become so caught up in the business side of things, but sometimes I think that's exactly what's distracting us from what really matters - the art itself 💭

Anyway, I'm curious to see how this new series will unfold 🎉... with a revamped budget and all that jazz. Maybe it'll be a fresh start for the show, or maybe it'll just be more of the same. Either way, I'll be tuning in to find out! 👀

📊 I just did some digging on the old Disney+ deal with Doctor Who and it turns out they raked in around $160M from the show's international streaming rights 🤑 over a 2-year period! Meanwhile, the BBC reportedly lost around $50M due to their own distribution costs 💸. It's clear that neither party really saw a huge return on investment, which is why this partnership has ended 🚫. And let's be real, with the recent viewership numbers... 😬 it's not like they're missing out on anything 🙅‍♂️. Still can't wait to see what Russell T Davies brings to the table next year 👊. The revamped series is expected to have a much higher budget, so fingers crossed they can pull in some decent numbers 💸!

awwwww dont worry about doctor who theyre gonna make it even better!!! 🤩💖 new series coming up in 2026 and russia t davies is back as showrunner can't wait to see what he has in store 🎉🔮 the animated version for preschoolers sounds like a great idea too 👶🚀 let's just hope they can get ncuti gatwa's departure sorted out 💕

🤔 I think it's interesting that the BBC is looking to rebrand Doctor Who as an even more family-friendly show, with an animated version aimed at preschool audiences 📺. This could potentially attract a whole new demographic and help boost viewership numbers 👧. However, it's also clear that the show needs to shake off its reputation for dwindling viewership and production difficulties 💥. The BBC is right to announce new plans, but I'm curious to see how they'll address the creative challenges ahead 📝. Perhaps a return to form with Russell T Davies at the helm would be just what Doctor Who needs to regain some of its former glory ✨.

awww man I'm so bummed about the news... 😔 i've been loving doctor who since like ever and now it's gonna be on bbc one again? 🤕 that means less streaming and no disney+ but hey at least russell t davies is back and he's a genius! 🎨 so fingers crossed he brings some magic to the show... and maybe billie piper will make a comeback as the doctor who knows what would be lit 🔥💫

I'm a bit sad to hear that Disney+ is ending its partnership with Doctor Who 🤔. I mean, it's not like they were getting paid a ton of money or anything, but still... The show needs to get its footing back on the streaming world after 2024's numbers 📉. And what's up with Ncuti Gatwa leaving as the Doctor? It feels like a major plot twist in an episode (pun intended) 😮. At least Russell T Davies is back at the helm, so fingers crossed that he can bring some of that old magic back to the show 🔮.

💭📺 I'm low-key sad about Disney+ leaving Doctor Who 🙅‍♂️. The show's been on for ages & we need a reliable way to watch it 📊. New series coming in 2026 sounds promising 🎉! Hope Russell T Davies is back at the helm 💪, and they get the budget sorted 💸. Can't wait to see Billie Piper as The Doctor again 👀😍
