'Do you expect me to talk?': Dick Van Dyke says he turned down playing James Bond

Dick Van Dyke, 99, Reveals He Was Once in the Running for James Bond Role - Here's What Happened Next

In a surprising revelation, Dick Van Dyke has come clean about his past attempt at playing a British icon on screen. The actor, best known for his iconic role as Bert in Mary Poppins, confessed that he was once considered to play James Bond.

During an appearance on the Today TV programme, Van Dyke recalled being approached by Bond producer Albert Broccoli after his performance in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 1968. "Would you like to be Bond?" Broccoli asked, but Van Dyke replied with a cheeky remark, "Have you heard my British accent?"

Van Dyke has long since apologised for the infamous cockney accent he sported as Bert, which has been dubbed one of the most atrocious in cinema history. However, his attempt at playing Bond was another example of his struggles with adopting a British accent.

When asked about his experience, Van Dyke said that cast and crew should have flagged up any concerns over his accent during Mary Poppins. He also credited an Irish dialect coach for his inaccuracies.

Despite this setback, Van Dyke remains active in the acting world, stating that he doesn't want to retire - it's "my life." The actor is promoting a new book, 100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist's Guide to a Happy Life, and continues to charm audiences with his quick wit.

Interestingly, Van Dyke has had several close calls in the past, including being rescued from drowning by porpoises while surfing and crashing his car on the California freeway. With Daniel Craig's departure from the franchise, no American actor has been announced as the next Bond - yet. Scottish, Irish, and Australian stars have previously filled the role.

As the search for the new Bond continues, fans will be eagerly awaiting news of who will take over the iconic character.

I'm like "what if" about Dick Van Dyke's James Bond story πŸ€”... I mean, can you imagine him as Bond? Would've been pretty funny πŸ˜‚! He always said he's a Cockney at heart, but still... who tries on a British accent for a role and makes fun of it afterwards? πŸ™ƒ Anyway, I love that he's still active in the acting world, and it's awesome that he's promoting his new book, 100 Rules for Living to 100 πŸ“š. Maybe one day we'll see him play Bond... but only if he promises to stick to his Cockney charm πŸ˜‰!

I cant even imagine Dick Van Dyke as James Bond lol 🀣 he was actually pretty funny about it tho. I mean who doesnt love a good cockney accent? But seriously, its kinda cool that hes still active in the acting world and promoting his new book. I wish more people would be honest about their mistakes and take the high road like Dick Van Dyke did. By the way, speaking of books, has anyone read "To Kill a Mockingbird" in school yet? 😊

oh man I'm dead Dick Van Dyke as Bond lol imagine him as 007 like he'd totally bring a different vibe to it and those porpoises saving his life while surfing is already a movie in itself πŸ˜‚πŸ¬ I think he's still got some great roles left in him especially with that new book of his, maybe someone should look into making a Bond-esque film with him - but let's be real who would play the next Bond πŸ€”

I think this is a great example of how politics comes into play when it comes to entertainment πŸ€”πŸŽ¬. I mean, think about it, if you're from a non-British background trying out for a role like James Bond, does that even count as "British" enough? It's like they're saying, "Hey, we've got this all-American guy who thinks he can just waltz in and play us." πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And what about the whole accent thing? I mean, Dick Van Dyke has apologized for his past mistakes, but what about the systemic issues that lead to those mistakes in the first place? It's like we're perpetuating these stereotypes without even realizing it. πŸ™„

On a bigger note, this whole debate makes me wonder, who gets to decide who plays Bond? Is it just about talent or is there some kind of bias at play? Maybe we should be having a conversation about how representation in Hollywood works and whether or not it's fair to limit opportunities to people from certain backgrounds. πŸ“šπŸ’

I feel bad for Dick Van Dyke when he was considered to play James Bond back in 1968 πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ He's already had some issues with his British accent in Mary Poppins, and I guess it didn't exactly help with the audition 😊. But you know what? He still went on to have an amazing career, and I love how humble he is about it all πŸ™. And honestly, who wouldn't want to play Bond at some point? It's like the ultimate dream role for any actor πŸ’₯. Now that Daniel Craig has left the franchise, there are so many talented actors vying for the role... fingers crossed someone amazing takes over soon! 🀞

πŸ€” I can see why Dick Van Dyke wouldn't have been taken seriously as Bond with that cockney accent - it's cringeworthy 😳. But you've got to give him props for being honest about it and not beating himself up too much. It's cool to see he's still active in the industry, promoting his new book and all that. And who knows, maybe someone with a similar sense of humor would be perfect for the role now? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

omg u guyz i cant even πŸ˜‚ dick van dyke was literally considered to play james bond?! i mean i know he's had some funny moments in his career but this is just too much 🀣 i feel bad for him tho because of that accent he did do on mary poppins but at least he owns up to it now and says he'll try harder next time lol can u imagine him as bond tho? πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ he seems like such a charmer and i love how he's not taking himself too seriously about it all πŸ’β€β™€οΈ anyway gotta go check out his new book now 😎

idk about this Dick Van Dyke thing... i mean he's been open about his past mistakes with accents and stuff but playing James Bond? that's like a whole different can of worms... lol 🀣 i think its cool that he's still active in acting though, who wouldn't want to play 007 right? but omg have you seen the accent he had as Bert in Mary Poppins? that was some wild stuff πŸ˜‚ maybe Van Dyke was just trying to be funny at the time and didn't really mean it... idk but i guess its interesting that Albert Broccoli asked him to play Bond lol what if he would've been good though? πŸ€”

lol what if Dick Van Dyke actually had nailed that James Bond role lolol I mean can you imagine? would've been so cool πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ... but for real though his accent in Mary Poppins is a total disaster πŸ˜‚ who needs a dialect coach when you're gonna stick your foot in your mouth like that 🀣

I don't know if I believe Dick Van Dyke was ever really in the running for James Bond... like, is it even possible a cockney guy would've been taken seriously as Bond? πŸ€”β€β™‚οΈ At the same time, who knows what could've happened if he'd actually gotten the part? Maybe he would've brought a weirdly charming flair to the character that no one's ever seen before... or maybe his accent would've driven everyone crazy like Bert did! πŸ˜‚

I think it's kinda funny how Dick Van Dyke was considered for James Bond LOL 🀣. I mean, can you even imagine him as Bond? πŸ˜‚ He's got this whole lovable uncle vibe going on and it's hard to picture him being all suave and spy-like. Still, it's cool that he's still active in the acting world and promoting his new book - he seems like a pretty down-to-earth guy. πŸ€—

I gotta say, Dick Van Dyke's accent struggles are still cringeworthy even 50 years later πŸ˜‚πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, I get it, he was trying to play a British guy and his accent just wasn't quite there. But can you imagine being considered for James Bond? That's like, the ultimate role πŸŽπŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ. And yeah, maybe the producers should've flagged up some concerns about his accent in Mary Poppins instead of moving forward with it πŸ€”.

On the bright side, Dick Van Dyke is still active and witty, so that's def worth checking out πŸ“šπŸ’‘. But honestly, who needs James Bond when you can have a dodgy British accent like Bert from Mary Poppins πŸ˜‚πŸ‘?
