Detroit’s enormous American flag vanishes day after its big reveal - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit's Giant American Flag Snags Wind, Will Be Back

A day after its big reveal, Detroit's massive American flag has vanished. The enormous banner, measuring 141-by-85 feet, was unveiled just one day ago at the new Hudson’s building in downtown Detroit.

According to Bedrock officials, the giant flag was removed due to wind conditions. While moderate winds were forecasted for the area, the gusts proved too much for the massive banner, which was designed to be seen from Woodward Avenue.

Veterans Day, on Tuesday, has been mentioned as a possible return date for the star-spangled flag. However, it remains unclear whether weather conditions will cooperate once again.

This latest iteration of the giant American flag is part of a long-standing Detroit tradition that dates back to 1923. The original J.L. Hudson’s building displayed what was then the largest American flag in the world, measuring 230 feet long and 90 feet high. This massive banner became an annual holiday symbol for generations of Detroiters.

The new version may be smaller than its predecessors but is still believed to be the largest hanging U.S. flag in the country. Once reinstalled, it will continue the tradition by overlooking Woodward Avenue.

While the giant American flag has been removed from view due to wind conditions, residents and visitors alike can rest assured that it will return when the weather calms down.

Ugh, I'm so over this giant flag drama 🙄. Can't they just get a proper anchor or something? I mean, 141-by-85 feet is huge! How do they even manage to put it up and take it down daily without it toppling over? And now it's back again on Tuesday for Veterans Day... will we ever see the end of this American flag saga? 🤦‍♂️ Also, can't we just get a decent windbreak or something? It feels like they're using us as guinea pigs to test out flag durability. Prioritize functionality over aesthetics, people! 😒

omg u gotta be kiddin me!! detroit's huge american flag was up just 1 day & already got torn down by some gusty winds lol what kinda wind protection is that?? i mean its 141x85 feet for crying out loud! they shoulda gotten some reinforced pole or somethin. can't wait to see it back up when the weather clears tho 🤦‍♂️💨

So I think its pretty cool that they're bringing back this Detroit tradition 🎉, but like, what's up with the flag being so huge? 141x85 feet is massive! You could practically fly a small plane underneath it 😂. But seriously, I get why they'd want to go big or go home – its supposed to be seen from Woodward Avenue, after all.

I'm just hoping that when its reinstalled, they'll make sure it's securely fastened down so it doesn't get blown away again 🤦‍♀️. And can we talk about the fact that this is like, a major tourist attraction now? Like, people are actually coming to see the flag because it was huge, not because of anything else related to Detroit... maybe its time for them to showcase some other stuff too?

I'm kinda bummed out about Detroit's giant American flag getting pulled down 🌪️😐. I mean, who doesn't love a good patriotic vibe? But hey, safety first, right? I guess wind was just too intense for that massive banner 🌬️👀. Fingers crossed it'll be back up by Veterans Day 💫🇺🇸. It's such an iconic part of Detroit's history and tradition 🙏💪. Can't wait to see it flying high again 😊🎉!

I'm not surprised this happened, I mean think about it 🤔. That thing was like a giant magnet for strong winds, it's like they said, moderate winds weren't enough to hold it up. It's crazy how fast it was taken down, almost as if it was waiting for the perfect moment to come crashing back down 😂.

And can you imagine if it got damaged? I mean, that thing is huge and expensive to repair or replace, not to mention the potential for someone to get hurt trying to put it back up 🤦‍♂️. I'm glad they're saying it'll be back on when the weather calms down, but still, can't we just have a flag that doesn't need a second wind 💨?

Man, I'm so bummed out about that huge American flag in Detroit... it was just put up yesterday and now it's gone? 🤕 I mean, I know those strong winds were a problem, but still, it would've been sick to see that thing waving high above Woodward Avenue. Reminds me of when they used to have the J.L. Hudson building with the massive flag back in the day... that was like, whoa! They say this new one is still the largest hanging U.S. flag around, but it's just not the same as seeing it all lit up and big like a movie screen 🍿. Anyway, I'm sure they'll get it reupped for Veterans Day or something... fingers crossed, dude 💪

🤦‍♂️ I mean, can't even get a single day right with this massive flag. First it's unveiled and then it's already gone... what's next? They gotta recheck those wind conditions every hour or something. Still, I guess the spirit of the thing is nice - Detroit's got history, folks! 👍

Ugh, what's up with these massive flags?! I mean, I get it, we need something epic to celebrate our nation's birthday, but this one's just crazy! I was at Hudson's building yesterday and thought that thing was gonna take off like a kite 🌪️🇺🇸. Can you imagine having to secure it in the first place?! And what's with the wind conditions? We're talking 141-by-85 feet, folks! That's not just a flag, that's a skyscraper... err, I mean, a giant flag 💥.

And have you seen those pictures from the '30s?! The original J.L. Hudson's building had a flag that was like, what, 230 feet long? That thing was massive! But this new one's still huge in its own right, and smaller than the last few ones, if I'm being honest 🤔.

Anyway, it's not all bad news... I mean, I'd rather have a giant flag that's gonna disappear in a gust of wind than have some boring old flag stuck up there. And hey, when it comes back, we'll be ready for it! Bring on the 4th of July fireworks and everything 🎇💥

OMG did u no Detroit had a giant american flag 4 like, ever? its so cool! they just put up this new one & now its blown away lol i guess thats why they say detroit is windy 🌬️😂 anyway whats the point of havin a giant flag if it just gets blown away? can we get some clips from the old ones? that 1 from 1923 was like wOW 😍

OMG, I'm so bummed out! 🤕 That massive American flag was just standing there, looking all patriotic and awesome, and then WHAM! Gone in an instant. I love how Detroit keeps bringing back this tradition - it's like a big ol' hug for the city. The original J.L. Hudson's building had such a giant flag, but now that one is gone too... I guess progress has its downsides 😔. Hopefully they can get it rehung soon and it'll be back to being our friendly giant American flag 🇺🇸😊

Omg what's up with this huge flag just dissappearing 🤯 like 1 day after it was put up?! Windy Detroit or something lol. I get it tho, don't wanna see a giant flag blowing away in the middle of Woodward Ave 😂. But I'm so down for when it comes back, especially if they can figure out how to keep it steady 🤔. And btw, 141x85 feet? That's still massive! Guess it's not as big as J.L Hudson's original one tho 📏. Anyways, Veterans Day sounds like a good chance for it to come back, fingers crossed the wind isn't too crazy that day 🌬️.

Ugh 🤕 the giant American flag in Detroit is at it again 😩 one day it's all set up and proudly waving, next thing you know its just hangin there limply in the wind 😴 and now it's gone 🙄 1923 was probably a better time for this kind of thing I mean what even is the point of a giant flag just to have it blown down? And now they're gonna try again on Veterans Day? Good luck with that 💪 at least the new one is smaller but still annoyingly big 🤦‍♂️

🤦‍♂️ come on, who builds a 141x85 ft flag in the middle of a windy city like detroit?! i mean, didn't they think about the winds up north? 🌀 this thing was literally begging to get blown away lol. and now it's back to square one... again. can't they just use some proper wind-resistant material or something? 😂 next time, please, for the love of all things american! 💪

I'm not buying the whole "weather conditions" thing 🤔. I mean, come on, a 141-by-85 feet flag? That's like, super windy city material right there 💨. If they couldn't handle a little wind, maybe they should've gone with something a bit more... compact 😏. But you know what really gets my goat? The fact that we're still celebrating this thing after all these years 🙄. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a cool idea and all, but can't we just stick to some other way of showing our patriotism for once? Like, maybe a nice BBQ or something instead of flying around in the wind like a giant kite 🍔🏆

Ugh I mean yay 🤷‍♂️! So the flag was just a bit too much for the wind, right? But at the same time, like, what's the point of having a giant American flag in the first place? It's not like it's really gonna make a difference or anything. And don't even get me started on how it's gonna be back up in no time, because let's face it, Detroiters love their flags and they'll probably just have to put it up again when the weather clears up. But still, I guess it's kinda cool that it's part of this long tradition or whatever... but only if you ask me 😐.

I mean, what's up with these giant flags in Detroit? I remember back in my day, we used to have these huge American flags at the baseball stadium, but that was like, so 90s. Now they're doing this thing with it again, and I'm just curious... is it gonna be a permanent thing or just another temporary installation? And don't get me wrong, I love how patriotic Detroit is, but sometimes I feel like these giant flags are just a bit too much. 🤔🇺🇸 Still, if they're keeping the tradition alive and it brings people together, then I'm all for it! 😊

omg u gotta feel bad for detroit lol, all that hype for a giant american flag just to get blown away by the wind guess it's back to Woodward avenue soon 🌊😅 i mean i guess it's not the end of the world but it's kinda sad that something so cool got ruined like what if they coulda made it more sturdy or somethin? anyway, at least it'll be back up eventually and we can all enjoy the patriotism vibes once again 🇺🇸💪
