December skies boast meteor showers, a super moon and Orion the Hunter's return

This December will be a spectacular month for stargazers as two prominent meteor showers are set to illuminate the night sky. The Geminids, one of the best meteor showers of the year, is expected to make its appearance from December 7-17, with a peak on the nights of December 13 and 14. During this time, observers can anticipate between 120 to 150 shooting stars per hour, as these bright, fast-moving meteors streak across the sky.

But that's not all - just behind the Geminids' trail lies another smaller meteor shower, known as the Ursids, which will make its appearance from December 17 through Christmas. The Ursids are expected to peak with around 10-20 shooting stars per hour on the longest night of the year, the winter solstice on December 21.

Astronomers and enthusiasts alike are abuzz with excitement about these celestial events, with Bart Fried, a member of the American Astronomical Society, describing December as "going to be a fun month." Jackie Faherty, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History, adds that the Geminids will make for a great viewing experience, especially when paired with crescent moon phases that allow stargazers to observe more clearly.

The year's last full moon, which occurs on December 4, is also worth noting. This will be a supermoon, or perigee-syzygy, making the moon appear about 10% bigger and brighter than usual due to its elliptical orbit. However, this event might not be ideal for stargazing, as it's the most inopportune time.

As the night sky comes alive with the Geminids and Ursids, astronomers will also have the chance to observe the winter constellations, including Orion the Hunter, whose return marks a milestone in the season. This iconic constellation is relatively easy to spot due to its distinctive straight line of three bright stars forming its belt.

For those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of these celestial wonders, stargazing spots like Inwood Hill Park will provide an ideal viewing experience, free from urban light pollution. As the year draws to a close, December promises to be a memorable month for anyone who gazes up at the starry night sky.

omg i'm so hyped 4 this month!!! 🀩 two meteor showers in one month is like a dream come true! the geminids and ursids are gonna light up the sky with those crazy fast meteors 😲 i'm planning to sneak out of the house on dec 13 and 14 to catch the peak of the geminids... and who cares about the supermoon on dec 4? it's not like it's gonna ruin our stargazing experience or anything πŸŒ• but can u imagine seeing the ursids at christmas time?! ❄️ i'm defo gonna bundle up and head to inwood hill park with my friends to catch a glimpse of those shooting stars... fingers crossed the weather is clear! ☁️

πŸŒ πŸ‘€ so the world's gonna come together to ooh and ahh over some shooting stars... sounds like a total snooze fest if you ask me 😴 but hey, I guess it's better than braving the crowds at inwood hill park on christmas πŸŽ„πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ anyway, supermoon on dec 4 tho? that's actually kinda cool... or is it just gonna be a distraction from the actual astronomy stuff? πŸ€”

man I remember when I was a kid we used to stay up all night on new year's eve watching the firework display πŸŽ‡ it was always so magical... and now they're talking about meteor showers and supermoons πŸŒ• what's next? gonna be able to see aliens in the sky? πŸ˜‚ anyway, i'm stoked for these celestial events, can't wait to get out of the city and find a spot with no light pollution to witness the Geminids and Ursids. been too long since I've seen some real stars up close πŸ’«

December is gonna be lit 🀩... not that I'm a morning person or anything, but I guess it's cool that there are two meteor showers coming through. The Geminids sound like they'll put on quite a show, with 120-150 shooting stars per hour? That's like, whoa... and the fact that the Ursids will peak on the winter solstice is just, you know, super convenient since we're all stuck inside during that time πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. And hey, if you can't handle a bigger moon (aka supermoon), there are still plenty of other things to look at... like Orion's belt, which I'm pretty sure is just as impressive in real life 😏.

December's gonna be lit πŸŽ‰! I mean, two meteor showers in one month? That's like, stargazing heaven! The Geminids are gonna put on a show, with those 120-150 meteors per hour... my jaw's already dropping thinking about it 😲. And the Ursids? Smaller but still cool. It's like the universe is giving us a little present just before Christmas 🎁.

I love how people are getting all excited about this. Astronomers and enthusiasts alike, everyone's talking about it. Even Bart Fried thinks it's gonna be fun 😊. And hey, who doesn't love stargazing? It's like nature's own light show up there. I'm def heading to Inwood Hill Park to check out the views... should be pretty epic πŸ”.

🌠 can you believe how many meteors we get to see in dec? 120-150 per hour is crazy! 🀯 and there's another one behind it like that too... i wonder if its gonna be better than last year's geminids... anyone know if the winter solstice will make a big difference or what? 😊

🌠️ IT'S GOING TO BE AN AMAZING DECEMBER FOR STARGAZERS!!! TWO BIG METEOR SHOWERS ARE COMING IN BACK TO BACK, AND I'M TOTALLY EXCITED!!! THE GEMINIDS WILL BRING LIKE 120-150 SHOOTING STARS PER HOUR ON THE 13TH AND 14TH, WHILE THE URSDIDS WILL PEAK WITH ONLY 10-20 BUT STILL WORTH CHECKING OUT!!!

AND LET'S NOT FORGET ABOUT THE SUPERMOON ON THE 4TH! IT'LL BE A BIG DEAL IN THE SKY, EVEN IF IT MIGHT NOT BE IDEAL FOR STARGAZING. BUT WHO NEEDS TO SEE THE MOON WHEN YOU CAN SEE THOSE METEORS?! 🌟

ANYWAY, MAKE SURE TO GET OUT TO SOME STARGAZING SPOTS LIKE INWOOD HILL PARK ON DECEMBER 21ST. IT'LL BE A BREEZE TO FIND YOUR OWN CONSTITUTIONS AND CHECK OUT ORION THE HUNTER!

the geminids are gonna be lit lol, 120-150 meteors per hour is crazy! and can you even blame them for not mentioning that the last full moon on dec 4 is actually supermoon tho? wouldn't wanna try to stargaze during that if i were u lol. but seriously, december is gonna be a sick month for astronomy fans.

🌠 oh man, can't believe we got two meteor showers comin' through in dec! like, the geminids are gonna be lit with 120-150 shooting stars per hour lol that's crazy!!! and then we gotta look out for the uridis which is smaller but still awesome. and omg who cares about the year ending on a low note with this full moon? it's gonna be super bright anyway! πŸŒ• so yeah, get ready to stargaze and enjoy these celestial events before they pass us by...

🌠 December is gonna be lit 🀩! I mean, two meteor showers in one month? That's like a double feature of awesomeness! Geminids and Ursids are both gonna make an appearance, and I'm low-key hyped to see those shooting stars πŸ’«. And can we talk about the crescent moon phases? Perfect timing for some serious stargazing πŸŒ•. On a more serious note, it's always exciting to see the winter constellations come back into view, especially Orion the Hunter πŸ”₯. If you're lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these celestial wonders, grab a blanket and head to Inwood Hill Park – those city lights are gonna be a major bummer πŸŒƒ. But hey, it's worth it for this epic stargazing experience ⭐️!

December is gonna be lit for stargazers 🌠! The Geminids and Ursids are gonna bring some serious fire to the night sky! I mean, 120-150 shooting stars per hour? That's like, wow 😲. And the fact that the winter solstice is on Dec 21 makes it even more magical ✨. Orion the Hunter is back, too, which is always a highlight for me 🌟. Plus, stargazing spots like Inwood Hill Park are the perfect spot to catch some of these celestial events without all the city lights getting in the way πŸ’‘. Can't wait to get out there and see what the night sky has in store!

omg I just saw that video of space tour and I'm still trying to figure out what's up with those astronauts on the ISS πŸš€πŸ˜‚ anyway back to this meteor shower thing... 120-150 meteors per hour sounds CRAZY!!! 🀯 I wish I could see it in person but my schedule is super busy this month lol. speaking of busy, have you tried that new coffee shop downtown? I heard their hot chocolate is TO DIE FOR πŸ˜πŸ‘€ and also what's up with the Earth being a rock anyway? Is it true we're all just floating around on some giant ball in space πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ’«

DECEMBER IS GOING TO BE SO COOL FOR STARGAZERS!!! πŸŒ πŸ’« I MEAN, TWO METEOR SHOWERS IN ONE MONTH? THAT'S LIKE A COSMIC PARTY UP IN HERE!!! πŸŽ‰ THE GEMINIDS ARE GOING TO PUT ON A LIGHT SHOW, WITH HOURS OF SHOOTING STARS PER HOUR!!! AND THE URSIDS WILL BE RIGHT BEHIND IT, BRINGING EVEN MORE FIREWORKS TO THE SKY!!! 🌟 IT'S GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN TO OBSERVE ALL THESE CELESTIAL WONDERS, ESPECIALLY WHEN PAIRED WITH THAT SUPERMOON ON DECEMBER 4! JUST BAD LUCK IF YOU WANT TO STARGAZE DURING THAT TIME, THOUGH...

🌠 think its gonna be one of those months where ppl spend way too much time outside on cold nite lol, like what if u had carpal tunnel or something after all that stargazing 🀯 and btw can we talk about how inconvenient the winter solstice is? Dec 21 feels like it's just, like, right in the middle of everything

December is gonna be lit πŸ’«! Not just because of the holiday vibes πŸŽ„, but also because we got two epic meteor showers happening – Geminids and Ursids! I'm talking 120-150 shooting stars per hour during the peak of Geminids on Dec 13-14? Mind blown 😲. And let's not forget about that supermoon on Dec 4, which is actually gonna make stargazing a bit tricky πŸŒ•. But honestly, who needs clear skies when you can have a crescent moon and a plethora of stars to gaze at? It's all about the experience, fam! I'm low-key excited for the winter constellations, especially Orion's return – it's like the ultimate celestial showstopper πŸ”₯. And if you're lucky enough to catch some quality stargazing time in a spot with minimal light pollution, like Inwood Hill Park? You're golden 🌟. It's gonna be a wild ride up there!

The prospect of two meteor showers converging in late December is genuinely thrilling! The Geminids' anticipated shower of 120-150 shooting stars per hour offers an unprecedented opportunity for stargazers to witness the celestial ballet 🌠. Meanwhile, the Ursids, although fainter, will still provide a tantalizing glimpse into the night sky's hidden wonders.

It's interesting how the astronomers are framing December as "fun month" - perhaps it's because they're aware that even small moments of wonder can brighten up our lives? The addition of the winter solstice on Dec 21 adds an extra layer of excitement, with stargazers having a chance to observe not just two meteor showers but also the majestic Orion constellation ⭐️. With suitable viewing spots like Inwood Hill Park available, I'm confident that many will seize this opportunity to marvel at the starry night sky and find solace in its vastness πŸŒƒ

I'm super hyped about these meteor showers in Dec 🀩! I mean, 120-150 shooting stars per hour? That's crazy!!! But, I did some fact-checking and it turns out that the peak hours for the Geminids are actually between Dec 13-14, not just on those nights. Like, it's gonna be a whole weekend of awesome stargazing 🌠. And, fun fact: the Ursids will be more visible during the winter solstice (Dec 21), so if you can stick around for that, you'll see even more meteors πŸ”! Just hope those pesky city lights don't ruin it...

omg i just saw this thread and its so late lol what's with people not keeping up πŸ˜‚ anyway i think the geminids are gonna be lit πŸ’₯ 150 shooting stars per hour is insane, but yeah that's kinda ruined by the full moon on dec 4 tho πŸŒ• supermoon is cool and all but stargazing saps my energy so good luck to those who wanna catch a glimpse of the geminids πŸ‘

πŸŒ πŸŽ‰ I'm so hyped about these meteor showers! 120-150 shooting stars per hour?! That's like a space show right in our backyard! 🀯 But, can we talk about how crazy it is that the Geminids are coming just after this full moon? Like, won't that light pollution ruin our stargazing experience? πŸ˜• Can't they just give us a break for one month?! Just kidding... kinda. Anyway, I'm totally down to grab my telescope and head out to Inwood Hill Park on the 13th or 14th. Who's with me?! πŸŽ‰πŸ‘«
