Connecticut routs San Diego State to win its fifth NCAA men’s basketball title after dominating tournament | CNN

UConn wins fifth NCAA men's basketball title in dominant fashion, leaving Aztecs frustrated. The University of Connecticut has secured its fifth national championship in the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament after a 76-59 victory over San Diego State University at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Tristen Newton led UConn to victory with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Adama Sanogo added 17 points and 10 rebounds. These senior guards played pivotal roles in the Huskies' success, helping their team secure a lead it would not relinquish.

Coach Dan Hurley expressed confidence in his team's abilities, referencing their six losses during the regular season as fuel for their determination to prove themselves. "We weren't ranked going into the year so we had the chip on our shoulder," he said. "We knew the level that we could play at, even through those dark times."

The Huskies' dominant performance was a far cry from the team's struggles earlier in the tournament. UConn initially trailed early but staged an 11-minute comeback in which they scored only five free throws and missed 12 consecutive shots. By halftime, the Huskies had taken control of the game with a 36-24 lead.

San Diego State attempted to mount a second-half comeback but was thwarted by the Huskies' solid defense. The Aztecs narrowed their deficit to just five points before UConn scored nine unanswered points, putting them in a commanding position heading into the final minutes.

Coach Brian Dutcher praised his team's efforts but acknowledged that they simply couldn't keep up with UConn's intensity and skill. "We had to be at our best. We weren’t at our best. A lot had to do with UConn."

UConn's victory marked a historic achievement for the program, joining an elite group of teams that have won five NCAA Men's Basketball championships. The Huskies' women's team has also enjoyed similar success, having won 11 national titles.

In related news, Jordan Hawkins shared his excitement about winning the championship title one day after his cousin Angel Reese claimed the women's title for Louisiana State University. "The family reunion is going to be great so that’s all I know," he said with a smile.

With this win, UConn has solidified its place in NCAA history as the sixth team to achieve this remarkable feat, following UCLA, Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, and Indiana.

UConn's 5th NCAA title is kinda impressive but also super predictable 😏. I mean, it's not like they were the underdogs or anything... they're basically a dynasty. 🤯 And let's be real, those seniors are just dominating on the court - Tristen Newton and Adama Sanogo are like the dynamic duo 💪. The fact that they only lost 6 games in the regular season makes their whole "chip on our shoulder" thing feel kinda forced 🙄. I'm not saying they're gonna come back from this, but it's gonna be interesting to see how they do next year... maybe they can actually keep up with themselves 😂

😊 so u guys thought san diego state was gonna pull off that comeback? 😅 uconn's defense was on fire 🔥 especially when they went 12 shots without scoring 🤯 coach hurley's words made sense tho, these seniors played huge for them 💪 and now they're part of that exclusive 5x club 🎉 gotta respect their dedication & hard work 👏

I'm hyped for UConn 🤩! Five national championships is huge for their program, and it's awesome that they could overcome all those losses during the regular season to prove themselves. I love how Coach Dan Hurley kept it real about not being ranked going into the year and having that chip on their shoulder 🔥. It's clear their team has some serious talent with Tristen Newton and Adama Sanogo leading the charge 🔄.

It's also amazing for Jordan Hawkins, winning his first championship title and getting to share it with his cousin Angel Reese after her win last week 😊. Family reunions are supposed to be epic, and I'm sure he's super stoked to celebrate this with his loved ones 💪. What do you guys think about UConn's dominance? Can anyone stop them in the future? 🤔

🤔 I'm telling you, there's more to this story than meets the eye. Think about it, five NCAA men's basketball titles? That's just a coincidence? I don't think so. It looks like UConn is trying to create some sort of legacy or something. And what's up with all these championship wins? Is it just a fluke or are they really that good?

I'm also wondering, have you seen the stats on San Diego State's players? They're not even getting enough minutes to make an impact. It's like they were intentionally held back by the refs or something. And don't even get me started on the comments from Coach Brian Dutcher. He sounds like he's trying to spin a narrative here.

And have you noticed how Jordan Hawkins is acting all calm and collected about it? I think he knows something we don't, and that cousin of his who won the women's title... yeah, there's definitely more to this family thing than just coincidence. 💁‍♂️🏆

🏆👏 That's amazing! UConn is on fire right now 🚀. They're like a well-oiled machine, playing together and making it look effortless 💪. It's inspiring to see a team come from behind and dominate like that 🔥. The coaches are clearly doing something right 🤔. And can you believe they've got 11 national titles? Mind-blowing! 😲

Yaaas or wha?! Aztecs got served 🤣 I mean it's no surprise though, UConn's been on fire all tournament! Tristen Newton and Adama Sanogo are straight up ballers 💪. Coach Hurley's right, those six losses in the reg season were just fuel for their fire 🔥. And can we talk about how clutch that comeback was? 11 minutes of nothing but UConn dominating 🤯. They played like a well-oiled machine out there! 😎

omg uconn is on fire!!! 😍 i mean seriously they dominated that game against san diego state! tristen newton and adama sanogo were on point with 19 and 17 points respectively 🤩 coach dan hurley must be so proud of his team's determination to prove themselves after those tough losses during the regular season 💪 it was a crazy comeback too, from being down early to leading by 12 at halftime! 😲 and now they're joining an exclusive club with all these other great teams that have won multiple ncaa titles 🏆
