Burned by flight delays, many of NYC's Thanksgiving travelers turn to trains

As the holiday season descends upon New York City, many travelers are opting for an alternative mode of transportation: trains. The recent spate of flight delays and cancellations has led to a surge in demand for Amtrak services, with some passengers choosing to forego flying altogether.

According to estimates from the Port Authority, 3.3 million people will travel through JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, and Stewart airports over the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend – a slight increase from last year's period. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that air travel is back on track. With outdated radar infrastructure and staffing shortages, the risk of delays remains high.

As a result, many travelers are turning to trains as a more reliable option. Allan and Alexandra Gibson, a family of four from New York, recently boarded an Amtrak train to Washington D.C., citing concerns about airport security and the hassle of flying. Their 10-year-old son, Grant, even opted to bring his heavy scooter and backpack on board.

While some passengers are embracing the convenience of trains, others are facing challenges of their own. Chronic equipment problems in Amtrak's Hudson River tunnels have led to repeated delays between New York and New Jersey, while longer train journeys can take several days – a far cry from the speed and efficiency of air travel.

For comedian Amy Janes, who was unable to obtain a Real ID for flying domestically, a 32-hour Greyhound bus trip proved to be a faster and cheaper alternative. Her experience highlights the complexities of transportation options this holiday season, as travelers weigh the pros and cons of each mode of transport.

The National Transportation Secretary has assured travelers that air traffic controller staffing levels are back to normal after a recent shutdown, but many remain skeptical. As Brenda Fisher, an Atlanta resident heading to Poughkeepsie, noted: "We're not expecting the train to be delayed and wait in the train station overnight... So it was just a better choice."

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I mean, who needs reliable air travel when you can spend 3 whole days on a bus with a bunch of strangers? Like, what's a little sleep deprivation and lost productivity among friends? 🚐 And yeah, because waiting in train stations overnight is totally not a thing that would make or break your trip plans... πŸ˜’ Just saying.

Man, have you seen how crazy air travel has been lately? 🚫 I'm surprised people are still flying with all these delays and cancellations. Trains might be a bit slower, but at least they're reliable, right? πŸ˜‚ I've got friends who are taking the train to DC this Thanksgiving, and it's actually gonna be easier for them than flying. And can you believe some of the issues with Amtrak's equipment? It's like they need an upgrade already πŸš‚πŸ”©

I'm not a fan of Greyhound buses myself, but I guess when you gotta go with what you got, right? πŸ˜… At least the bus trip was cheaper and took less time. I feel for Amy Janes, who had that crazy 32-hour ride... talk about a holiday surprise! πŸŽ‰

I'm loving how people are all about that train life this holiday season πŸš‚πŸ’¨! It's crazy how air travel can be such a hassle, especially with those airport security lines and whatnot. I mean, who needs all that stress when you can just hop on the train and chill out? 😎 Of course, it's not always easy – those delays in the Hudson River tunnels are no joke πŸ™„ – but I guess some people just wanna get there without breaking the bank or losing their minds.

I've had my fair share of crazy travel experiences too, especially when I was younger πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. I remember one time I got stuck on a delayed flight for hours because the plane's engine decided to act up 😩... anyway, back to trains! It's great that some people are embracing the convenience and flexibility they offer.

I'm just hoping that air traffic control staffing levels will stay stable this holiday season 🀞. You never know what could go wrong with all those flights in the sky, right? ⛅️

I'm low-key surprised people are still flying despite all these delays and cancellations 🀯. Like, I get it, air travel is convenient, but what's the point if you're stuck in a plane for hours? And don't even get me started on security checks – airport vibes can be super stressful πŸ’¨. Trains might not be as fast, but at least you have your stuff with you and can walk around without being stuffed into a tiny seat πŸš‚. Plus, some people are actually bringing their own wheels and whatnot on the train... that's just wild πŸ€ͺ! I mean, I'd rather wait for days than deal with all those flights and security lines... but hey, to each their own 😐.

omg u guys, i'm so done with flying rn 🀯 they r always delin on or 2 hours late! my aunt went to LA 4 thanksgiving last yr & her flight got cancelled lol. she ended up taking the train & it took like 48 hrs but at least she made it 😴. i think trains r the way 2 go, esp during holidays when u gotta get 2 where u need 2 b ASAP πŸš‚. plus ur not stuck in a cramped seat or worried about security checks all day. my friend's fam went on an amtrak trip to DC & had such a good time! πŸ‘ they even brought their scooter & backpack on board lol πŸ˜†

I gotta say, I'm loving how people are jumping ship on flights this holiday season! πŸš‚ I mean, 3.3 million travelers is still a lot, but at least they're choosing trains over planes? Amtrak's got some major issues going on though - those Hudson River tunnel problems are crazy! 😩 And I feel you with the Greyhound bus trip being a better option for Amy Janes... who needs that kind of stress during the holidays?! πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ But, seriously, it's all about weighing your options and making informed decisions. Maybe trains aren't the best choice for everyone, but for those dealing with flight drama, they might be just what the doctor ordered! 😊

trains r defo the way 2 go rn lol airports are such a pain especially with all da security checks 🚫😩 but i feel 4 ppl like amy janes who dont have ids, buses r a lifeline tho. dont get me wrong, trains r convenient too, but not everyone's got 32 hours to spare 😴. gotta give it 2 the nyc airports tho, they're defo trying 2 improve things. btw, who thought dat hudson river tunnels r equipment problem free? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

omg u guys r gonna love this! im so over ppl thinking trains r all about granny vibes lol trains can be so convenient esp wen ur flyin gets cancelled or delayed like what happens 2 Allan & Alex's fam they took the train 2 Washington D.C. n it was way easier than dealin w/ airport security n hassle u need 2 get a real ID 4 domestic flyin but greyhound buses r not bad either lol 32 hrs is def doable esp wen ur chillin n don't wanna pay all those extra airfare fees

btw im lovin how ppl r startin 2 look @ trains as an option esp during holidays w/ airport delays & cancellations r super common rn u should totes check out amtrak's routes n see which one works best 4 u n ur fam

πŸš‚ trains are literally the only way to fly this thanksgiving 🀯 i mean seriously though, flight delays and cancellations are getting out of hand. 3.3 million people still gonna get stuck in airport security lines? no thanks! plus with all the chronic equipment problems on Amtrak's Hudson River tunnels, you gotta question the whole train thing too 🚫

i saw that one family brought their scooter and backpack on board tho 🀯 and honestly i dont blame them. my aunt did the same thing last year when she went to DC for christmas. but at the end of the day, if you can afford it, flying is still the way to go ⏰

😊 trains r defo on trend rn especially w/ all da flight probs πŸš«πŸ›¬οΈ dont get me wrong tho i love me some air travel but when its delayed or cancelled its like "ugh" and trains r where its at for me personally πŸš‚πŸ’¨ i mean yeah delays happen but at least u can walk around & grab a snack while u wait 😊⏰ plus its defo more chill on da train tho 🀯

I'm so done with all the flight drama this holiday season 🀯! I know some people are still dealing with issues like outdated radar infrastructure and staffing shortages, and it's crazy how that can impact travel plans. I've got friends who had to shell out more cash just to get on a train because of equipment problems 😬. But at the same time, I get why people would choose trains over flying - no security worries or long lines to deal with! And let's be real, sometimes you gotta take that 32-hour Greyhound bus trip if it means getting from point A to B without breaking the bank 🚌. As a fan of convenience (and sanity), I'm all about exploring alternative options when air travel just doesn't cut it 😊.
