Bencic & Svitolina's WTA history: First mothers in top 10 at same time

Belinda Bencic and Elina Svitolina have made history in the world of tennis by becoming the first mothers to be ranked inside the top 10 simultaneously.

Bencic, who recently welcomed her daughter Bella in April 2024, has jumped up one place to ninth in the latest WTA ranking following an 11-month maternity break. The Swiss player is incredibly proud of her achievement and believes that it's a testament to her hard work and dedication.

Svitolina, on the other hand, was given a much-needed boost with her daughter Skai being born last October. She has moved up two places to tenth after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this month. The Ukrainian is proud of her resilience and couldn't thank her fans enough for their incredible support.

This milestone marks an exciting time for women's tennis, where female players can now balance their career ambitions with motherhood. As part of the WTA tour's efforts to make life easier for new mothers, female players who wish to freeze eggs or embryos will have their ranking protected by the tour, allowing them to return to competition at a later date.

Bencic is keen on making the most of her comeback in Melbourne and eyes a grand slam title.

In other news, Novak Djokovic has moved up to third in the world rankings following his appearance in the final at Melbourne, while Alexander Zverev dropped to fourth after being defeated by Carlos Alcaraz.

OMG u gotta love how these 2 moms are killing the tennis game right now!!! 🤩 I mean Belinda and Elina r literally rocking this whole mom thing like it's nobody's business! 😂 Their dedication & hard work are truly inspiring, especially after taking a break to focus on their babies. It's awesome that they're paving the way for other moms in tennis too. The WTA tour is getting it right with the new rules about egg-freezing & ranking protection - these women deserve a second chance at their careers! 🎾💪 Now if only we could see more of them competing together... that would be EPIC!

🤔 I mean, congrats to Belinda and Elina on making history with becoming top 10 mums, but can we talk about how they're getting a free pass for a while? 🙄 Freezing eggs or embryos and still ranking protected? It's like the WTA is giving them a get out of jail card 🚪. And what about all the other new mums who aren't as fortunate? 😔 Does anyone else think this is just a PR stunt to boost female players' careers while they're on maternity leave? 💁‍♀️

🤩 Can't believe we're living in a time where moms can be top 10 tennis players! It's so inspiring to see Belinda and Elina killing it on the court while balancing parenthood. I'm loving how the WTA is supporting new moms with egg freezing/embryo protection - it's about time! 🎯 These two women are proof that you can have it all, and I'm sure Bella and Skai will be rocking tennis courts too in no time 🐾💪

🙌 Can you believe it? These two ladies are killing it and breaking records! I mean, becoming a mom is tough enough, but adding top 10 tennis skills to that mix? 🤩 It's not just about the sports, though - this shows us that women can balance it all. The WTA tour is doing its part by supporting new moms who want to return to competition later on.

But what I love most about this story is how proud both Belinda and Elina are of their achievements. It's so inspiring to see them rocking the mom-life and still dominating on the court! 🎾 And with Novak Djokovic making a comeback, it's going to be an exciting season ahead!

I'm loving this new development in women's tennis 🎾! It's amazing to see Belinda Bencic and Elina Svitolina break through that glass ceiling, becoming the first mothers to be ranked inside the top 10 at the same time. I mean, can you imagine how tough it must have been for them to balance their careers with motherhood? The fact that they're doing it so successfully is a testament to their strength and commitment.

It's also super cool that the WTA tour is recognizing the challenges new mothers face and offering support by protecting their ranking if they choose to freeze eggs or embryos. That way, they can take some time off without worrying about losing their spot in the rankings. I'm excited to see more female players taking advantage of this option and coming back stronger than ever.

And let's not forget about Bencic's ambitions 🤩! She's going for that grand slam title and it'll be amazing to watch her compete with a new baby on her mind. The tour is definitely heading in the right direction by supporting its players, both on and off the court 💪.
