Beloved pop-up Amelia Street Pizza Co. plans Hazel Park shop - Detroit Metro Times

Local Foodie's Dream Comes True: Amelia Street Pizza Co. to Open Hazel Park Shop

Detroit is on the cusp of a pizza revolution, thanks to Matt Arb's latest venture, Amelia Street Pizza Co. The popular pop-up, known for its mouthwatering "Pecorino Half Moon" with a signature sourdough crust, has announced plans to expand to a brick-and-mortar location in Hazel Park.

Acclaimed chef and investor James Rigato is backing the project, bringing his expertise and mentorship to help Arb build something from the ground up. "It's the coolest thing to have someone like James taking an interest in this little thing that started in my kitchen," Arb said humbly. The low-frills shop will be located at 951 E. Nine Mile Rd., in a 1,000-square-foot storefront attached to a party store.

Arb launched his pop-up operation after seven years working as a refinancing banker, and it quickly gained traction on social media. He was soon invited to a residency at Detroit's Dragonfly in 2025, further cementing his reputation as a talented pizzaiolo. The menu is simple yet effective, featuring cheese, pepperoni, and a rotating special, alongside cheese bread, cookies, and soft drinks.

Rigato, who owns the high-end restaurant Mabel Gray, sees potential in Arb's pizza concept and is committed to helping him grow his business. "I've wanted to open a pizza spot for a long time," Rigato said. "This is not a Mabel Gray project. This is Matt's business and Matt's pizza."

With Rigato's backing, Amelia Street Pizza Co. is poised to become the go-to destination for pizza enthusiasts in metro Detroit. The shop aims for a spring opening and promises to deliver the best pizza you've ever had, while still maintaining its neighborhood charm.

Ugh, another overhyped foodie joint coming to metro Detroit ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ˜’. I mean, a pizza shop in Hazel Park? Really? It's just going to be a bunch of hipsters and Instagram influencers taking selfies with their artisanal pies. And $15 slices are just ridiculous at this point. Mark my words, this place is gonna be a fleeting fad that'll be over as soon as the novelty wears off. I'm not holding my breath for the "best pizza you've ever had" claim... let's see how they really do on quality control ๐Ÿค”

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ I'm soooo done with the party store thing tho ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿšฎ 951 E Nine Mile Rd is like literally next to a liquor store ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜ด what's up with that? ๐Ÿค” can't they find a better spot for their pizza shop? ๐Ÿ˜’ and another thing, why do they have to put it at the back of this party store? ๐Ÿ“ฆ๐Ÿ‘€ isn't that gonna be super inconvenient for customers? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ at least it's gonna be open till 10 PM which is pretty cool I guess ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘

OMG ๐Ÿคฉ I'm super stoked about this! ๐Ÿ• This is exactly what Detroit needs - a fresh face in the food scene. But let's talk about class, shall we? I mean, James Rigato backing Matt Arb's pizza shop out of the goodness of his heart? Sounds like a PR stunt to me ๐Ÿค”. What's next, a government-backed startup for a sustainable energy company in Detroit? Give it a break, someone's gotta get paid around here ๐Ÿ’ธ.

I'm gonna miss those pop-up nights at Detroit's Dragonfly ๐Ÿคค. Now they're expanding to a brick-and-mortar in Hazel Park, that's cool, I guess... I mean, who doesn't love good pizza? The menu is pretty simple, but I kinda hope they don't skimp on the 'Pecorino Half Moon' sauce - it was what set Matt apart from other pop-ups. 1000 sq ft storefront attached to a party store sounds a bit random, though ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Still excited for it, gotta support local businesses! But I wish they'd consider adding some more vegan/gluten-free options or something...
