BBCSO/Schuldt review – Phibbs cello concerto brings cohesion to uneven programme

BBCSO/Schuldt Review: A World Premiere that Stands Tall Amidst an Uneven Programme

In a concert marked by frenetic energy and disparate musical styles, Joseph Phibbs's world premiere cello concerto emerged as a beacon of cohesion, thanks in large part to the thoughtful direction of Clemens Schuldt. The BBC Symphony Orchestra delivered impressive performances across various works, showcasing their technical prowess, but struggling with inconsistency in overall programming.

Phibbs's cello concerto proved to be a standout piece, boasting a rich orchestration and nuanced string writing that complemented Guy Johnston's sensitive solo line. The work's five contrasting movements unfolded with warmth and vitality, each one expertly framed by Schuldt's precise control over his forces. Standout moments included the shimmering "Aubade" and the haunting "Elegy," which showcased the orchestra's ability to craft complex textures.

In contrast, other pieces on the programme struggled to find unity. Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem felt somewhat disjointed under Schuldt's clipped direction, with a tendency towards loudness that detracted from the overall impact. Mel Bonis's Ophélie was more effective in its restraint, allowing the harp and oboe to convey a sense of longing and melancholy.

Schuldt's true strengths were evident when he turned his attention to the anonymous suite from Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier. His idiomatic interpretation brought to life the waltz sequences with ease, even if the score itself felt somewhat stitched together. The orchestra's technical skill shone through, but Schuldt's micromanaging led to a sense of disjointedness and overly loud moments.

Ultimately, it was Phibbs's cello concerto that proved to be the most memorable piece in the evening, thanks to its cohesion and musicality. As such, it serves as a testament to Schuldt's leadership and the orchestra's abilities, even if other works on the programme fell short of their full potential.

🤔 I gotta say, I'm not loving the whole 'micromanaging' thing with Clemens Schuldt 🙅‍♂️. Like, yeah, he got some great moments under his belt, but when he's trying to control every single note and tempo, it can feel really forced. And don't even get me started on Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem - I mean, what's up with the loudness? 🗣️ It just feels like they're hitting the notes a bit too hard instead of letting them breathe. Phibbs' cello concerto was def a highlight, but it was Schuldt's direction that really made or broke some of those other pieces for me... 👀

man this bbc so concert was like soooo weird 🤔 they had clemens schuldt as the conductor but honestly he seemed kinda micromanaging 🙅‍♂️ like he was trying to control every single note and it felt forced. and the programing was all over the place, tchaikovsky's hamlet tone poem was like a total departure from everything else and didn't really fit with the rest of the concert. but phibbs' cello concerto tho 🎸 that thing was like the heartbeat of the whole show, it had this energy and cohesion that just drew you in. schuldt did a great job on that piece, like he knew exactly what to do to bring out the best in the musicians...or maybe he was just trying to hide his own mistakes 🤷‍♂️

🤔 I gotta say, I'm kinda disappointed in this concert... not because of the performances or anything, but because they were just so... inconsistent 🎵. Like, you'd have these moments where everything comes together perfectly, and then BAM! The next piece is just a mess. It's like they couldn't make up their minds on what they wanted to achieve 🤷‍♂️.

And don't even get me started on the programme selection 📝. I mean, what's with the Tchaikovsky tone poem? It felt like they were trying too hard to be dramatic and ended up being a bit of a mess 😩. And Mel Bonis's Ophélie was cool and all, but it was just a tiny part of the overall programme... feels like they could've done more with that one 🤔.

But hey, at least Joseph Phibbs's cello concerto was fire 🔥! That piece had some serious cohesion and musicality going on. I mean, the way Schuldt directed the orchestra was pretty tight 👍. So yeah, all in all, it was an okay concert, but not exactly my cup of tea ☕️.

omg i'm literally dying over that cello concerto!!! 🤩 Clemens Schuldt is like the ultimate conductor - he knows how to bring out the best in every piece! Phibbs's concerto was SO well done, I loved how it had all these different moods and emotions 🌹💔. And Guy Johnston's solo line was EVERYTHING 😍. I'm so glad we got to hear that Aubade - it gives me chills every time 🎶💥. Can't wait for more of Phibbs's music and Schuldt's conducting - they're like a dream team!!! 💫

I'm so done with these concert reviews 🤯🎵. Can't they just focus on one piece instead of trying to rip apart the entire program? Like, what's wrong with a little inconsistency in programming? It's not like it's going to make or break your life 😂. And seriously, who tries to micromanage an orchestra? It's not like they're robots 🤖. Clemens Schuldt seems like a total buzzkill for me, just trying to nitpick every little thing. Can't he just let the music speak for itself?! 🙄

OMG, I loved how Phibbs's cello concerto stood out from all the rest 🎵👏! The way Clemens Schuldt directed it was pure magic ✨! And Guy Johnston's solo line was so emotive and heartfelt ❤️. But, tbh, I feel like some of the other pieces were a bit of a letdown 😐. That Tchaikovsky tone poem felt kinda rushed and overpowered 🎶. And Strauss's suite, although fun, got a bit lost in all the noise 🗣️. Still, Phibbs's concerto was seriously stunning 💥!

🎶 I gotta say, BBCSO's world premiere concert was kinda hit or miss for me... The Phibbs cello concerto was literally amazing 🤩 - it had that perfect balance of energy and calmness. But, oh man, some of the other pieces felt like they were trying too hard to be different 🤪. I mean, who needs a 10-minute-long tone poem when you can have a nice flow? 🙄 Also, Clemens Schuldt's direction was pretty good, but sometimes it felt like he was more focused on showing off his chops than letting the music breathe... not that I'm saying he's bad or anything 😊. Overall, though, it was a solid concert with some real standouts! 👏

I don't know about all these new-fangled composers 🤷‍♂️. I mean, Tchaikovsky was good enough for me back in the day, you know? And what's with this "frenetic energy" business? Can't they just let a piece of music breathe like they used to? Phibbs's cello concerto was alright, I guess... reminded me of a bit of Elgar's Cello Concerto, but not quite as strong. Schuldt's direction was solid, but sometimes I feel like these young composers need a bit more guidance from the masters 🎶. And don't even get me started on this "programme" business... in my day, we just had a nice ol' fashioned concert with some classical music and maybe a few pops tunes 🎵.

omg u gotta check out Joseph Phibbs's cello concerto 🤩! it was literally the highlight of the whole concert!! Clemens Schuldt did an amazing job directing everything & his direction really brought out the best in the orchestra...but tbh, some pieces felt kinda disjointed 🎵 like that Tchaikovsky tone poem, u know? and schuldt's micromanaging led to some loud moments 😩 still, the phibbs concerto was fire 💥 and i'm already counting down till the next philibs performance! 👏🎸

I was so excited to hear Joseph Phibbs's world premiere cello concerto, but honestly I'm not sure why some of the other pieces were chosen for the program 🤔. It felt like a bit of a mixed bag, you know? The BBC Symphony Orchestra did sound great in certain parts, especially when they got to play Phibbs's cello concerto - it was really beautiful and emotive 💕. But then there were some moments where I felt like the loudness just overpowered everything else... it's like, can't we find a happy medium sometimes? 😩 Anyway, overall I'd say the concert had its ups and downs, but Phibbs's concerto really stood out as a highlight 🎵.

I'm so stoked they finally got that BBCSO concert right! I mean, I was feeling like the whole program was gonna be all over the place with all those different styles and pieces 🤯. But then Joseph Phibbs's cello concerto came on and it was like, WOW! That guy knows his stuff. The way Clemens Schuldt directed the orchestra was perfect too - not too much, not too little. Guy Johnston's solo line was so emotive and heartfelt 💔. I loved how each movement flowed into the next, it was like a beautiful dance 🕺. Too bad some other pieces didn't quite come together... that Tchaikovsky piece felt kinda forced to me 😐. But overall, I'm still buzzing from that Phibbs concerto - can't wait to see what he does next! 👏

omg, that BBCSO concert was like, totally mixed bag 🤔! i loved Joseph Phibbs's cello concerto tho!!! it was sooo beautiful & nuanced 🌹. the way Clemens Schuldt directed it was pure gold ⚡️, especially that "Aubade" movement - shivers down my spine 😱. but other pieces were meh, idk... Tchaikovsky's tone poem was like a loud, over-the-top soap opera 📺 and Mel Bonis's Ophélie was just too slow 🙄. schuldt did his thing well with Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier suite tho! 👏 the orchestra sounds sooo talented but sometimes his directing felt like micromanaging 🤷‍♂️, took away from the overall vibe. anyway, Phibbs's concerto was like a ray of sunshine 💛, that's for sure!

🎵👏 I'm loving Phibbs's cello concerto, it was like a breath of fresh air amidst all that chaos! 💨 The way Schuldt directed the orchestra, it felt so polished and refined, especially in "Aubade" 🌙 and "Elegy". I mean, what was up with Tchaikovsky's tone poem though? 🤔 It felt like Schuldt was trying to be all dramatic and stuff but ended up being kinda loud and overpowering 🎧. And don't even get me started on the Strauss suite, micromanaging aside 😬, it was still super fun to watch the orchestra bring that waltz sequence to life 💃! All in all, though, Phibbs's concerto really stole the show for me 💫

I'm still reeling from that BBCSO concert 🤯... I mean, where do you even start? Phibbs's cello concerto was honestly breathtaking - it felt like a breath of fresh air in an otherwise uneven program 🌬️. The energy was electric and the way Schuldt brought everything together was pure magic ✨. But what really got me was how some pieces just didn't quite gel... I mean, Tchaikovsky's Hamlet tone poem felt like a mess 😩. And don't even get me started on that anonymous suite from Der Rosenkavalier 🙄. It's like they were trying to show off the orchestra's technical skills but lost sight of the music itself 🎵. Anyway, Phibbs's concerto was definitely a highlight and I'm still buzzing about it 💥. We need more concerts like this one - ones that showcase real musicality and cohesion 🌈.

just saw this concert review and i gotta say, that cello concerto was absolute fire 🔥💥 guy johnston's solo line was so emotive and rich 🎶 phibbs did an amazing job with the composition - it felt like a whole story in movement. Schuldt's direction was spot on too 👏, but some of those other pieces were meh 😐 tchaikovsky's hamlet tone poem was just too loud and disjointed for me, you know? and that strauss suite was cool and all, but i think it's a bit overplayed 🙅‍♂️ overall though, i'm so glad phibbs got to shine - his music is just so compelling 🎵

I gotta say, I'm surprised by some of the choices made for the program 🤔. That Tchaikovsky tone poem felt like an odd inclusion - I mean, it's a classic and all, but it just didn't seem to mesh with the rest of the concert. And don't even get me started on that Strauss suite 🙄. It was like Schuldt was trying too hard to make it sound impressive, instead of letting the music breathe. But hey, at least Phibbs's cello concerto shone through - that was some top-notch stuff 🎵! The way Schuldt handled the different movements and string writing was pure gold 💛. Guy Johnston on solo cello was also super impressive 🤩. Overall, it was a solid concert, but I think they could've done better if they'd stuck to their guns a bit more 🔥.

OMG, I mean... what's up with these classical concerts, right? 🤣 It's like they're trying to give you whiplash! First, one minute it's all fancy and stuffy, then BAM! Next thing you know, it's loud and chaotic 😂. I loved that cello concerto though, the guy who wrote it must've been a total genius, no? 🤓 And can we talk about Clemens Schuldt for a sec? Dude's like a master conductor... or a micromanaging dictator 🙄. Either way, he brought out some amazing stuff, even if some of that Tchaikovsky was like, woah 😲. All in all, it was an interesting night, but I think I need a nap now 😴.

omg i cant get enough of cellos 🎻🔥 phibbs concerto was straight fire 🔥✨! did u no that its 1st world premiere? 🤯 and clemens schuldt direction was on point 😊 the bbc symphony orchestra showed off their tech skills but struggled w/ inconsistency 🤷‍♂️ gotta say tho, johnston solo line was pure gold 💛 here's a fun fact: did u no that phibbs concerto has 5 movements? 🎵 each one unique & expertly framed by schuldt's precise control 👏

I gotta say, I'm not entirely sure why everyone's giving Clemens Schuldt a hard time about the concert 🤔. I mean, sure, some of the pieces didn't quite come together, but it was still a great showcase for the orchestra and that Phibbs concerto was straight fire 🔥! Guy Johnston's solo line was so emotive, and Phibbs's cello just sang. And hey, even if Schuldt got a bit too hands-on with some of the pieces, I think he showed some really interesting ideas 💡. Plus, it's not like we're asking for perfection here – every concert has its highs and lows, right? 🤗 So let's all just take a deep breath and appreciate the BBCSO's technical prowess... and Schuldt's passion project 🎵!
