'A split second of sheer terror – and we're off': Lucian Msamati on Waiting for Godot's electrifying first night

The curtains parted, and I stepped into the wings, surrounded by a sea of expectant faces. The air was electric with anticipation as Ben Whishaw, dressed in full costume, stood beside me like a beautiful lost waif. Our eyes met, and we shared a brief hug before parting ways to prepare for our entrance. The adrenaline coursed through my veins like liquid fire, but I felt no fear – only excitement and a thrill of anticipation.

As I took my final deep breath, the hum of the crowd grew louder, and I could feel their collective energy coursing through my very being. It was a strange sense of familiarity, like coming home to a place that had been absent for far too long. Backstage, the crew was poised and ready, their movements economical and practiced.

The call came from Sophie Rubenstein, our deputy stage manager, and I felt the familiar rush of terror – but it was quickly replaced by excitement as we stepped onto the platform. Ben took his position under the tree, while I settled into my stone, taking a deep breath to calm my nerves.

As the lights dimmed, the crowd erupted into applause from behind the curtain, a physical wave of energy that threatened to overwhelm me. The thrill of seeing something new and original was exhilarating, but also terrifying – like standing on the edge of a cliff, staring into the abyss. I took a deep breath and began our first lines, my voice steady and practiced.

But then, out of nowhere, Ben's Vladimir let out a laugh that caught me off guard – a laugh we'd never experienced before. The crowd roared in response, and I felt my heart stumble in its tracks. I recovered quickly, delivering the full line as written, but it was a close call – one that left me breathless.

As we continued to perform, our castmates Jonathan Slinger and Tom Edden took the stage, bringing with them a whirlwind of laughter and applause. Their energy was infectious, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief at their presence. We were no longer alone on this journey; reinforcements had arrived.

Tom Edden's Lucky speech was a masterclass in performance – a tour-de-force that left the crowd eating out of his hand. Ben removed his hat at just the right moment, and the crowd went wild once more. I couldn't help but smile as I watched my colleagues work their magic.

Finally, the curtain call arrived, and we basked in the adoration of the crowd – a sea of young and old faces, united in their love for us. As we took our final bow, the lights blazed up, and the curtain came down, marking the end of another performance. We collapsed into an exhausted group hug, grinning at each other like fools. It was over, but the memory of this electrifying night would stay with me forever.

🌟 just saw that new play and I'm still buzzing from it 😊 The cast is on point, especially Tom Edden 🙌 his performance as Lucky was insane! 🤯 and Ben Whishaw's Vladimir had me at 'laugh' 😂 even the set design was top notch 👏 the whole thing just came together so well 💥

omg this play sounds like an absolute wild ride 🤯 i love how intense and nerve-wracking it must've been to be part of the performance - 30 seconds without a pause is insane! ben's laugh was a game changer, btw - i can imagine how shocking that must've been for everyone in the audience 😂 and tom edden's speech? absolute perfection 💥 i'm living for these behind-the-scenes details - what was it like to be on stage with all those people staring at you? did you feel like you were on cloud nine after the show?

I'm literally freaking out just reading about this! 🤩 I mean, can you imagine stepping onto that stage and feeling all those nerves? And then to have Ben Whishaw's character do this crazy laugh that catches you off guard... 💥 That sounds like the ultimate rush!

But what really gets me is how the whole cast came together to bring it all home. Tom Edden's speech was insane! I love how he just owns that stage and makes everyone feel seen and heard. And Ben's hat removal moment? Perfection! 😂

And I think what I love most about this story is that it's not just about one person doing a solo performance, but about the whole team working together to create something truly special. It's like they all feed off each other's energy and it just builds and builds until it reaches this explosive climax.

I'm totally inspired after reading this! I need to get myself to some theater performances ASAP!

🤩 "The show must go on," so they say... 💥 When we know that our talents are being appreciated and recognized by a crowd of people who love us for what we do, it's hard not to feel like we're on top of the world! 🌎 The energy in the room is just electric, and when everyone comes together to support each other, magic happens. ✨ We may have felt nervous at first, but with every step forward, our confidence grew, and so did the excitement. It's a thrill that's hard to put into words, but it feels amazing! 😃

I loved how they set the scene before the show - it really got me pumped up for what's about to happen on stage 🎭! The way the crowd was electric and the cast was poised, ready to bring their A-game is truly inspiring. And that laugh from Ben's character Vladimir? 😱 totally unexpected but so cool! I'm glad everything came together smoothly and the performance was a huge success.

I think what made it even more special was the energy between the actors - you could tell they were all feeding off each other, which created this amazing synergy on stage. And Tom Edden's speech was literally WOW 💥, I mean who doesn't love a good underdog story? Ben's reactions to Jonathan and Tom's entrances also added an extra layer of fun to the performance.

The cast really seemed to be having the time of their lives up there, which is infectious - you can't help but smile along with them 😊. And that final bow? perfection! The whole experience was just so well-executed and entertaining, I'm still buzzing from it 💥

Omg what a rush that first show must've been! 🤩💥 The energy in the air was palpable and it's no surprise you felt like coming home to your stage family 👪🏻. Ben Whishaw as Vladimir is giving me all the feels 😍, I'm shipping this pair hard 💘. And Tom Edden's Lucky speech? 🤯 Mind. Blown. His performance was perfection, I'm so glad he brought that energy to the show 🎉! But seriously, it sounds like your team worked together like a well-oiled machine 🤝 and that sense of relief when Jonathan Slinger and Tom Edden joined in is so relatable 🙌. The curtain call was everything and more - I'm living vicariously through your performance 💫 #TheatreMagic #PerformanceGoals #TeamWorkMatters
