Local Dog's Desperate Plea for Help Ends in Tragic Euthanasia, MSPCA Says
A heartbreaking case of animal abuse has taken a devastating turn as Dolly, a 2-year-old pit bull terrier mix, was put down by her medical team after suffering from severe emaciation. The dog, found nearly starved to death in Lexington last week, had been receiving intensive care at the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston since Saturday.
Despite initial hopes for recovery, veterinarians were left heartbroken when Dolly experienced a medical emergency on Thursday night that left her dependent on oxygen. With concerns growing about her long-term prognosis, the medical team made the difficult decision to euthanize the dog.
Dolly's condition was dire from the start. Found nearly 50 pounds underweight and too weak to stand up, she scored the lowest possible body weight score on the scale, indicating extreme emaciation before passing out. In addition to her severe emaciation, veterinarians also discovered a gastrointestinal bleed that required a blood transfusion, wounds on her feet and tail, and other health issues.
The MSPCA-Angell is now working with law enforcement and urging the public for help in identifying Dolly's owner. Mike Keiley, vice president of the Animal Protection Division, described the dog as "unbelievably thin" and too weak to stand up when she was brought into their care.
As a small memorial, the MSPCA has placed Dolly's paw print on their Boston office floor. Despite her tragic end, Dolly made a huge impact on the staff at Angell Animal Medical Center.
Anyone with information about Dolly or her owner is asked to contact the MSPCA at 617-522-6008 or 800-628-5808, or submit a tip online at mspca.org/tip.
