A horror fan’s guide to Halloween’s next cult classics - Detroit Metro Times

Horror Fans, Rejoice: This Halloween's Must-See Flicks Are Waiting to Chill You to the Bone.

As a horror aficionado who revels in all things spooky, I'm more than happy to share with you some of this year's most unsettling additions to the Halloween canon. Yes, we've all had our fill of familiar fright flicks like "Halloween" and "The Exorcist," but there are plenty of newer, dare I say, even scarier options waiting for us.

For those who crave a little more than your run-of-the-mill jump scares, look no further than "The Guest." This chilling tale follows former soldier David Collins as he drops by his late best friend's family home with nothing but bad intentions. Blending the intensity of a Terminator-esque rampage with the eerie atmosphere of Halloween, this is a horror film that will leave you breathless and disturbed.

Another spine-tingling experience awaits those who venture into "The Descent." A spelunking adventure turned nightmare as a group of women find themselves trapped in a labyrinthine cave system teeming with terrifying creatures. With intense sequences that linger long after the credits roll, this film is sure to traumatize even the most seasoned horror fan.

If cannibalism is more your speed, you won't want to miss "Dog Soldiers." This 1992 classic (yes, it's old, but trust me, it still packs a punch) follows a platoon of British soldiers as they battle a gang of werewolf-like creatures in the depths of the Sierra Nevada mountains. What makes this film so compelling is its unique blend of humor and terror – you'll laugh and scream along with equal relish.

A more modern take on the horror genre can be found in "The Empty Man." Released without director David Prior's approval, this 2020 film has turned out to be a masterclass in unsettling storytelling. Part folk horror, part detective thriller, this movie follows an investigator as he delves into the mysterious world of an urban legend. Be warned: this one is best enjoyed alone with the lights off.

Last but certainly not least, we have "Pulse." A chilling Japanese psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. What begins as a straightforward serial killer procedural slowly morphs into a disturbing exploration of our innermost fears and anxieties. With its haunting score and slow-burning tension, this is one film that'll leave you gasping for air.

So there you have it – four chilling horror flicks guaranteed to send shivers down your spine. Whether you're a seasoned horror aficionado or just looking for something new to add to your watchlist, these films are sure to provide a healthy dose of fear and unease this Halloween season.

🎃 The Real Horror isn't the Flicks, it's our Government's Handling of Mental Health 🤯. Think about it, we're scared of fake monsters in movies, but our own mental health system is like a real-life horror show! We need more funding for mental health services and support, not just some Hollywood thrill ride to scare us off 💸. And don't even get me started on the lack of representation in the media, it's always white people saving the day, where are our diversity in horror movies? 🤔 We need a real scream, not just one from behind the screen 👻💥

just saw that list of new horror movies and i'm SO down to check them out 🎃👻 "The Guest" sounds like my jam, all those intense Terminator-esque moments with creepy atmosphere... need to add it to my watchlist ASAP 😅 "Dog Soldiers" is also calling my name, who doesn't love a good werewolf flick? 🐺💀 the reviews for "Pulse" are already giving me major chills, slow-burning tension is definitely my vibe 🎧👻

omg i am literally so hyped for these movies!! "the guest" sounds like my cup of tea - all that ragey Terminator vibes mixed with some seriously creepy atmosphere... have you seen the trailer? 🤯 i'm also lowkey excited for "the empty man" - folk horror and detective thriller? that's a whole new level of unsettling for me 😳 i've heard great things about "dog soldiers" too, it's like an oldie but a goodie right? 🐺 let's get this halloween party started! 💀

I mean come on... all these new horror movies sound like they're just rehashing the same old creepy crawlies and jump scares. "The Guest" is basically just another Terminator rip-off, and "Dog Soldiers" is an ancient film that's still trying to make a comeback. I'm not buying it 🤔. And don't even get me started on "Pulse", which sounds like just another slow-burning psychological thriller that's just gonna put me to sleep 😴. Can't we have something new and original for once? 🙄

The art of crafting a truly terrifying movie experience is like mastering the dark arts - it's all about subtlety and misdirection 🎃️. These modern horror flicks know exactly how to tickle your fears, playing on our deepest anxieties without ever hitting you over the head with a sledgehammer 🤯. I mean, who needs gore or jump scares when you can create tension through atmosphere and suspense? The Descent is like that one nightmare that refuses to end - it'll stay with you long after the credits roll 👻. And then there's Dog Soldiers, which manages to balance humor and horror in a way that feels refreshingly original 🤪. For me, it's all about finding that sweet spot between creepy and cathartic. When done right, horror can be a beautiful thing - like a dark, twisted fairy tale 🌑.

omg i'm so stoked for halloween this year 🎃🕷️ but let's be real some of these movies sound super intense... like "The Guest" seems way too violent for my taste 😬 and I'm not sure if i can handle another horror movie about cannibalism 🤢 "Dog Soldiers" is on my list though lol, it sounds kinda fun? also "Pulse" sounds really creepy but in a good way? what's up with the director not being involved in "The Empty Man"? that always freaks me out 😳 anyway can't wait to watch some scary movies and scream at all the wrong times 🎬👻
