Hamtramck's Metropolitan Baking Company, a Detroit staple since 1945, has unveiled its expanded facilities, which will increase production capacity by nearly 40%. The 80-year-old bakery, renowned for supplying steamed hot dog buns to local eateries, now boasts state-of-the-art facilities that boast 37,000 square feet of additional space.
The expansion comes as the company continues to grow its reach across the country, with products including Pullman breads, brioche buns, and Kaiser rolls. What's more, its hot dog buns have become a staple in New York City's Yankee Stadium. According to George Kordas, the president of Metropolitan Baking Company, the company is now debt-free and has taken on a conservative approach to expansion.
"We're proud to be a family-run business that carries forward our founder's passion for quality baking," Kordas said, reflecting on his grandfather's vision. "We're committed to supporting local employees, schools, and community members who have been instrumental in our success."
Kordas highlighted the new facilities' amenities, including modern break rooms and secure storage areas for staff. This addition aims to minimize truck traffic in the neighborhood streets. The 25 new hires will bolster the bakery's production capacity.
The company's impressive output includes a whopping 240 dozen buns per minute, with roughly 140 loaves of bread produced every minute. Its products are primarily sold under the Kordas brand name and have gained significant traction across the U.S.
