2 men killed in avalanche near Longs Pass trail in Washington state, 2 rescued

Avalanche Tragedy in Washington State Claims Four Lives, Leaves Two Rescued

Tragedy struck in central Washington state on Friday when four men touring the backcountry near Longs Pass trail were caught in a devastating avalanche. The disaster claimed the lives of two victims, Paul Markoff and Erik Henne, while leaving their companions with harrowing ordeals.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Ian Laing and Patrick Leslie managed to send out a distress call via their Garmin satellite device, allowing rescuers to locate them. Fortunately for the duo, they were transported safely out of the affected area by snowmobiles in the same evening.

However, their fellow tourer fared poorly. The Northwest Avalanche Center confirmed that one of the remaining two victims was fully buried and killed by the avalanche. Unfortunately, due to hazardous conditions and the subsequent cessation of operations, responders resumed recovery efforts only after a full day.

The bodies of Paul Markoff, 38, from North Bend, and Erik Henne, 43, from Snoqualmie Pass, were later recovered with the aid of K9s and air support. The victims' personal belongings, as well as two snowmobiles, were also found in the area.

In light of this tragedy, authorities extended their heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those lost, emphasizing their gratitude for the bravery displayed by Ian Laing and Patrick Leslie during their ordeal.

😞 just heard about that avalanche incident in Washington state... feels like a really tough day for everyone involved πŸ€• my thoughts are with the families of Paul and Erik - can't imagine how devastating it must be to lose loved ones in such a way πŸ’” the fact that Ian and Patrick were able to send out a distress call and get rescued is just incredible πŸ™Œ they're total heroes! hope the authorities can find ways to improve avalanche safety measures so something like this never happens again 🀞

OMG what a devastating avalanche tragedy! πŸ€• I'm still shaking my head thinking about it... Those poor guys were just out enjoying nature and then BAM! Caught in an avalanche. 😱 The fact that they had a Garmin satellite device with them was literally a lifesaver tho! πŸ“Š It's like, so cool how those two dudes Ian and Patrick managed to send out a distress call and got rescued in time. 🚨 And I'm glad the authorities are giving credit where it's due - those two showed some serious bravery during that ordeal! πŸ‘ The recovery efforts were super impressive too, especially with K9s and air support involved. 😊 My heart goes out to the families and friends of Paul and Erik - such a tragic loss πŸ’”.

I'm so frustrated with Garmin right now 🀯. I mean, what's up with sending out a distress call being only possible because you had that fancy device on you? It's like, we get it, technology can be life-saving, but what about the people who don't have access to those things?! And now we're reading about two guys literally sent flying into an avalanche and their only hope is some satellite tracking device. It's just so...excessive πŸ€‘. Can't they design something that's more universal?

πŸ€• just saw this news about the avalanche in Washington state... four lives lost is just heartbreaking. I mean, can you even imagine being caught in an avalanche? The fact that two guys were able to send out a distress call via their GPS device and get rescued is just amazing though πŸ™. But for those who didn't make it, it's like they were just one minute away from safety... what even is that? 😩 the whole thing is so sad and I can only imagine how hard it must be on their families and friends. RIP Paul and Erik

omg yall, avalanches r soooo deadly πŸ€•!! cant even imagine how terrified those 2 guys must've been when they got caught in that thing 😱. idk what i would do if i was stuck w/ out signal and no way to get help... thankfully those 2 dudes used their garmin device to send out a distress call tho, lol good thinkin' πŸ€“! 2 yrs old is still too young for ppl 2 b dyin cuz of snow probs πŸ™. my sympathies go out 2 the families & friends of those who lost their lives πŸ‘

man that's so sad πŸ€• four lives lost is just too much I'm still trying to wrap my head around it... how lucky are they who got rescued? like what even is luck in a situation like this πŸ˜”. two people out of four who went on the same hike ended up getting caught in an avalanche 🌳. you can never be that close to nature and have all these things happen at once. RIP Paul Markoff and Erik Henne, condolences to their families too πŸ’”.

ugh thats so sad πŸ˜”πŸ’” these poor guys going out for a hike and get caught in an avalanche can u even imagine being trapped under all that snow ? 🀯 i hope they were prepared with warm gear and stuff ... 4 lives lost is just devastating, cant even imagine how hard it must be on their families πŸ’•

omg i cant even right now 😱 thats so sad about the avalanche they were literally in the middle of nowhere its just crazy how quickly things can change from safe to life or death you know? and those two guys who sent out a distress call with their garmin device what a lifesaver πŸ™ i feel bad for them though they must be traumatized after that experience anyway i was reading about a new snowboarding resort thats opening up nearby and im kinda tempted to go visit soon but idk if i should take the risk of avalanches πŸ€”

Ugh I'm so sorry to hear about these guys πŸ€•... like what's the point of even checking your gear before heading into the mountains? These avalanche thingies can be super unpredictable 😩. And yeah, I know it's not anyone's fault, but still gotta wonder how some people get caught off guard like that πŸ™„. Guess you just never really appreciate the risks till something bad happens... anyway, glad those two dudes made it out alive πŸ’¨πŸ‘

πŸ˜” I saw this thread popping up on Twitter and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I feel so sorry for Paul's wife and Erik's kids - they must be going through an unimaginable pain right now πŸ€•. And Ian & Patrick, man... those two are total heroes for sending out that distress call and just staying calm during the whole ordeal πŸ’ͺ. It's crazy how quickly things can go wrong in nature. I mean, we're lucky to have rescue teams like those snowmobile dudes who saved Patrick and Ian 🚨. The fact that it took a full day to recover Paul & Erik's bodies is just heartbreaking... hope they get the respect they deserve πŸ’”. Anyway, I'm glad this thread finally resurfaced - needed to see it to process my thoughts 😊

🚨 Just saw that 4 guys went on a hiking trip and got caught in an avalanche. I mean, isn't it crazy that these new-fangled gadgets like Garmin satellite devices are supposed to help people find each other in the wilderness? I'm not buying it... πŸ€” How reliable is that device anyway? Can you really trust it to send out a distress call when things go wrong? And what's with the snowmobiles showing up just hours after the avalanche? That's some fast response time, but can we be sure those motorbikes are even safe in those conditions? 🚧

Ugh, can't believe how slow they responded at first πŸ™„... I mean, I get that it's a remote area and all, but come on! Two guys sending out a distress signal is literally the best thing that could've happened to them. If it wasn't for that Garmin device, who knows what would've happened? The snowmobiles showed up hours later? 🚨 That's just crazy talk! Anyway, my condolences to Paul and Erik's families... really tragic news πŸ˜”.

I feel so bad hearing about what happened out there in Washington state πŸ€•. It's just that if they'd had better cell service or something, I don't know, maybe things would've turned out differently? I mean, it's not like they were trying to hide from anyone or anything. And those rescue people are heroes for sure - I was watching the live feed and saw how scared Patrick and Ian were... still can't believe they made it out alive 😩. The thought of Paul and Erik getting buried is just so... *ugh*. Anyway, glad we know what happened now? Hope their families are doing okay

ugh, can't believe what happened out there πŸ€•πŸ˜± avalanche is like no joke, these guys were so lucky to get rescued in time... i mean, imagine being trapped under that snow with no way out πŸŒ€πŸ’” and the fact that one of them didn't make it is just devastating 😭. i'm glad those who were rescued got help fast though, it's a miracle they made it out alive πŸ’ͺ🏽. still trying to process this tragedy, hoping the families can find some solace soon πŸ™

Just heartbreaking news from WA state πŸ€•. Four guys out enjoying nature's beauty got caught up in an avalanche 😱. So sad that two of them didn't make it. The ones who did, though... they really showed some serious survival skills by sending out a distress call on their sat device πŸ“². And kudos to the responders who worked through the night and used air support/k9s to recover the bodies 🚁. It's just awful that the avalanche conditions were so bad that it delayed recovery efforts by a day 🌫️. Can't imagine how tough this must be on their loved ones πŸ’”.

🚨😱 just heard about that avalanche in WA state its so sad for the fams of Paul & Erik, can't imagine going through something like that in the backcountry, all those risks when you're out there hiking πŸ”οΈ gotta respect the brave ones who managed to send out a distress call tho, they were literally fighting for their lives πŸ’ͺ those rescuers must've been shivering to boot, sending help in -15Β°C temps is insane ❄️ hope Ian & Patrick are doing okay now 🀞

πŸ˜” just thinking about that avalanche is giving me chills... my thoughts are with the families of the victims πŸ™. It's crazy how one wrong move in the wilderness can turn into a disaster. I mean, those guys were lucky to have sent out that distress call - it really saved their lives πŸ’‘. And to be honest, I think more avalanche safety training would've been super helpful for them πŸ€“. Anyway, my heart goes out to the people affected by this tragedy ❀️... we should all take a moment to appreciate how quickly things can change in nature ❄️.

I'm still thinking about that new coffee shop I went to over the weekend... you know, the one with the insane latte art 🀩? Anyway, speaking of art, have you seen those Instagram challenges where people make these intricate sand sculptures? It's mind-blowing how much detail they can fit into a small space! I mean, I tried making one once, but it just ended up looking like a sad little mess πŸ˜‚. What's your favorite coffee spot or sand-sculpture inspiration platform?
