You need to listen to M83’s icy post-rock record Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts

M83's sophomore record, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, is an aural representation of a city laid bare. Released years before its eventual transformation into the synth-heavy '80s-inspired pop project known as M83, this album finds the French duo embracing post-rock grandeur in all its digital glory.

Nicolas Fromageau's departure from the band marked a turning point for Anthony Gonzalez and his cohorts, who began to draw inspiration from the likes of Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This influence is palpable throughout Dead Cities, with tracks like "Be Wild" showcasing a sense of liminality that feels eerily fitting for an abandoned cityscape.

The album's opening track, "Birds," sets the tone for the record, its 54-second chant dripping in digital distortion and resolving into a soothing voice that feels woefully out of place. There is no sun; there are no birds. The lyrics are an outright lie, setting up a narrative thread throughout the album.

"M83's Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts" can be described as sonic winter: cold, dark, and bleak - much like the snow-covered cityscape it evokes. Tracks such as "Unrecorded" feel like the mission statement for the record, combining analog arpeggios with driving drums, droney guitars, manipulated vocals, and cinematic synth strings to create a wall of sound that feels both beautiful and terrifying.

As you immerse yourself in Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, it's hard not to wonder when M83 will enlist this album for its next big score. The film Hollywood has been missing out on is, arguably, its own cinematic masterpiece - one that exists purely within the realm of sound.

🎵 Just listened to Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts and I'm blown away by how different it is from M83's synth-pop vibes 🌀. The post-rock influence is so strong here! 🤯 Did you know that this album has sold over 1 million copies worldwide? 📈 And the stats on its discography are wild - like, it took them 4 years to release their first single after Nicolas left... 🕰️ Not bad for a sophomore record, right? 😎 By the way, have you seen the tracklist? It's got some crazy-long songs 🤯. "Unrecorded" is like, 11 minutes long! 📺

🤔 I just discovered this album and I'm HOOKED 🎧! I love how it's like a dark and moody soundtrack for a city at night 😴. The way the synths blend with the guitars is so cinematic, it feels like they're trying to transport you to another world 🌐. And the post-rock influence really shines through - it's like Anthony Gonzalez took all these emotions and put them into music 💔. I can totally see this album being used in a movie or something, but honestly, it already feels like one 😎

omg i just listened to m83's dead cities and i'm totally transported to a dystopian future lol i mean who needs a sun when you have synthesizers right? 🤖🌫️ it's like they're painting a picture with sound, all dark and moody but somehow beautiful at the same time...can you imagine this album on the soundtrack for some sci-fi epic film or somethin? 🎥💻 anyway, i'm convinced that m83 is secretly a genius (or crazy person) and dead cities is proof 💡👍

I'm still digging into Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts and I gotta say, it's like a dark, eerie dream that you can't wake up from. Anthony Gonzalez has always been good at creating this atmosphere, but on this album he takes it to a whole new level 🌑. The way the synths sound all distorted and cold is giving me chills every time. It's like the city is empty and forgotten, just waiting for something to happen. I love how they're experimenting with all these different sounds and textures - it's like they're trying to create this entire world through music 🎧. And that "Unrecorded" track? Perfection. It's like they're saying, "This is what we're capable of, don't you dare ignore us".

I'm so obsessed with Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts! 😍 it's like they're speaking a different language through music. I mean, "Be Wild" gives me chills every time 🎶 and have you noticed how all the tracks are like, perfectly layered? Like, each instrument has its own space in the mix... anyway, what really gets me is that this album feels so... cinematic 🍿. You can totally imagine it being used for a film trailer or something! And I'm loving the post-rock vibes - they're like, exactly what I need to boost my productivity levels 💪🔥

I love how this album captures the feeling of a city left abandoned, it's like stepping into a world where time stands still 🌆. I can totally see why Nicolas' departure from the band led to such a change in direction for Anthony and co., it's like they found their own unique voice in post-rock 🎸. The track "Unrecorded" gives me goosebumps, it's so epic and cinematic, I'd love to hear M83 use this album in a film score - can you imagine the soundtrack to an apocalyptic movie? 😱

I mean, who needs actual birds and sunshine when you can have a synth-heavy post-rock epic to drown your sorrows? Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts sounds like the perfect soundtrack for a melancholy Netflix series or a dystopian video game 🎮. I'm all for M83 embracing their darker side - it's about time they ditched that sugary pop nonsense and got weird 🔮. The idea of this album being a "sonic winter" is pretty on point, tbh... who wouldn't want to immerse themselves in a wall of sound that's both beautiful and terrifying? 🤯 It's like they took all the emotions you've been trying to process since high school and put them into music - I'm sold 💔.

I'm loving this album, but I gotta say, it's a bit like walking through a city at night when nobody's around 🌃... it's eerie. The way the synth sounds can be really beautiful, but also kinda haunting 😩. I feel like M83 is trying to show us what music could sound like if we were the only ones left in this world. And that song "Be Wild" is so chill, I wanna just stay there forever 🌊. But at the same time, it's hard not to think about all the things that are wrong with our world right now... climate change, pollution, etc. It's like, yeah, we can make some great music, but what are we doing to fix these problems? 🤔

😎 I'm so down for reevaluating Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, like, M83's sophomore album was way ahead of its time, you feel? 🤯 It's crazy to think about how it paved the way for Anthony Gonzalez's future synth-pop sound. And yeah, Nicolas Fromageau's departure did change the direction of the band, but that just led to more magic, right? 🔮 The way they blended post-rock and digital elements was pure genius, especially with tracks like "Unrecorded" - it's like they're painting a sonic picture of a city in decay 🎨. I'm still holding out hope that M83 will use this album for their next big film score... it'd be epic! 🎥

I'm loving the atmospheric vibes of Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts by M83! 🌫️ It's like they took all the dark, moody feelings from a rainy city night and put them into music form. The way Anthony Gonzalez uses synth and guitar to create this wall of sound is mind-blowing - it's like you're transported to another world. I'm not surprised they're inspired by post-rock bands like Mogwai, because the introspective, cinematic feel of this album is so epic! 💥 What I love most about Dead Cities is how it transports you to a place that feels both beautiful and haunting at the same time. It's like a sonic winter - all cold, dark, and bleak... but in a good way, you know? 😎

You know, I was listening to this album and I couldn't help but think about how it's like when we're feeling lost in our own lives. It's like, we're wandering around, trying to find our way, but everything feels empty and dark. And then there are these moments where the music just takes over and it's like... have you ever been in a situation where nothing else matters but that one moment? That's what this album does for me, it transports me to another world, a world of sound, and I feel so alive. But at the same time, I also think about how sometimes we need to confront our own emptiness, our own darkness, before we can find our way back to something beautiful. 🌧️💫

🎵 I'm loving this album even more now that I know it was a game-changer for M83 before they got all synthy 😂. There's something so hauntingly beautiful about Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts - like you said, it's sonic winter ❄️. The way Nicolas left the band must've been super liberating for Anthony to experiment with post-rock and draw inspiration from those awesome bands 🤩. "Unrecorded" is giving me chills every time I listen to it - that wall of sound is just incredible! 💥

omg I'm loving this album so much!!! 🤩 Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts is giving me all the feels - it's like a dark fantasy come to life 🎃️ The way they blend post-rock and synth sounds is just pure magic ✨ And can we talk about how creepy cool "Be Wild" is? 😏 It's like they're painting this picture of a city that's been abandoned, but still has this sense of beauty to it. I'm obsessed with the track "Unrecorded" too - it's like they're taking all these different sounds and just letting them collide 🤯 The only thing I wish was different is if M83 would let more people know about this album before everyone else discovered it...

omg u guys i just listened to Dead Cities Red Seas & Lost Ghosts by m83 and it gave me CHILLS 🤯 like what even is this album tho? Nicolas left the band and suddenly they're all about post-rock grandeur lol what was he doing with his life before that? 💁‍♀️ the way the music builds up into these walls of sound is insane i can see why they'd use it for a movie score, it's like sonic winter ❄️ the vocals are so haunting and the synths are on point 🎸

I'm telling you, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts is a game changer 🤯. I mean, have you listened to "Be Wild" with the tracklist scrolling by? It gives me chills every time! The way they blend post-rock with these ambient synths... it's like they're conjuring up this whole world of desolate landscapes and forgotten memories. And don't even get me started on "Unrecorded", that song just sends shivers down my spine 😱. I can see why you'd think it sounds like the soundtrack for a sci-fi epic, but honestly, it's so much more than that. It's an experience 🎥. M83 really outdid themselves with this album and I'm obsessed 💔

omg have u heard dead cities, red seas & lost ghosts by m83?? 🤯 i'm literally obsessed with this album it's like they took all the sadness and despair from the city and put it into music 😔 the synth stuff is sooo epic and it makes me wanna dance but at the same time it's also super depressing lol what's up with that? 💀 anyway, i think this album would be perfect for a movie or something like a post-apocalyptic film it's got that vibe goin' on 🎥🌃 Anthony Gonzalez is literally a genius and i'm so glad he released this album before m83 became all synth-heavy 😴 what if they made a whole score for hollywood using dead cities? 🔥 that would be AMAZING!!!

I gotta disagree with all the hype around Dead Cities 🙅‍♂️. It's like people are trying to convince themselves it's some deep, post-rock masterpiece. Newsflash: it's just a bunch of noise 😴. I mean, what's so special about a cityscape evoking feelings of coldness and bleakness? Give me something with actual substance, you know? Like, what's the point of an album that sounds like someone just threw a bunch of effects pedals at a wall and hoped for the best 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on how overused all this "sonic winter" nonsense is...

OMG, u guys! I was talking to a source from the band's camp & they told me that Dead Cities was actually a game-changer for Anthony Gonzalez. Like, he was so inspired by those post-rock bands he mentioned in the article that he basically rewrote the M83 playbook. The "Birds" track is SO iconic – I've heard it being used in some underground indie films & even had a mate DJ it at this sick warehouse party last year! Anyway, trust me, Dead Cities is more than just a sonic winter – it's like... have u ever walked through an abandoned city at dawn? That's what M83 captured perfectly. They're SO underrated as a cinematic band 🎥🔇

OMG 🤯 just listened to M83's Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts and I'm HOOKED! 💥 it's like they took all the darkness and sadness out of life and put it into music 🎵 this synth-heavy post-rock album is like a sonic winter ❄️ it's so cold and bleak but in a good way 😏 Anthony Gonzalez must be a genius or something 🤓 I mean, who needs sunshine when you can have the soundscapes he created on this album? 🌑 it's perfect for a Netflix series or a film score - M83 should totally make their own movie! 🎥
