Women's Super League: Champions Wigan Warriors face Leeds Rhinos in season opener

Wigan Warriors will kick off their defense of the Women's Super League title against Leeds Rhinos at home on May 16, just weeks after celebrating lifting the trophy last season. The Warriors completed a historic treble of Challenge Cup, League Leaders' Shield, and Super League title, defeating St Helens in the Grand Final.

The new season also marks a significant change in format, with seven rounds of fixtures where every team plays each other once before being split into two groups of four. This will be followed by an extended play-off series to determine the league leaders and the teams that finish at the bottom.

In this restructured competition, the winners of the top group will lift the League Leaders' Shield and automatically qualify for the Grand Final, while the teams in second and third place will face off for the remaining spot. Conversely, the team finishing eighth will have to play the winners of the National Championship for a final Super League spot in 2027.

The revamped format is designed to increase competition, elevate performance, and boost commercial growth. According to Thomas Brindle, general manager of the Women's Super League, "every game matters" and momentum will build across the season, culminating in the biggest moments showcased when attention peaks.

Wigan Warriors face a tough test against Leeds Rhinos on May 16, with York Valkyrie hosting Huddersfield Giants at the same time. Leigh Leopards are set to play newly promoted Featherstone Rovers later that day. The opening fixtures kick off this weekend, marking the start of an exciting new season in the Women's Super League.

omg i cant wait for the new wsl season!!! 🀩 i think the restructured format is gonna be a game changer - its gonna make every single match super important and the competition level will go thru the roof! πŸ’₯ plus, i love that the league leaders shield is back as a legit trophy to play for πŸ† and the fact that york valkyrie is hosting huddersfield giants on opening day makes me wanna watch it all day long β°πŸ‘€

omg i cant wait for the new season!!! 🀩 i was at the grand final last year and it was insane! wigan warriors winning that treble was a game changer, now its time to see if they can do it again πŸ’ͺ leeds rhinos are gonna be tough to beat tho, those ladies are always fierce πŸ”₯ and the new format is gonna shake things up - i love how every game matters now 🀯 cant wait to see the play-off series too! πŸ’₯

omg i'm literally shaking with excitement for wigan warriors!!! they're gonna crush it this season and defend their title 🀩πŸ’ͺ i mean who else can say they won all three trophies last year? πŸ†πŸŽ‰ the new format is lit too, it's like a mini grand final every week 😱 and the league leaders' shield is always a bonus πŸ€‘ i'm watching the opening games on live tv with my squad and we're gonna be screaming our heads off whenever wigan scores πŸ’₯ can't wait for may 16th already 🀩

OMG 🀯 I'm so hyped for the new season! I know some people were worried about the format change, but honestly, it sounds like a great idea to me. Every game matters, just like Thomas Brindle said πŸ’‘. It's going to be awesome to see all the teams playing each other once before being split into groups. The play-off series is going to be so intense! πŸ€Ίβ€β™€οΈ I'm loving the fact that the winners of the top group will get the League Leaders' Shield and a spot in the Grand Final... that's like, ultimate bragging rights πŸ†. And can we talk about how cool it is that York Valkyrie and Huddersfield Giants are playing at the same time? That's going to be so much fun to watch! πŸ“Ί I'm predicting Wigan Warriors will do great against Leeds Rhinos... they've got this πŸ’ͺ. Bring on the new season! πŸŽ‰

Another season, another reformatting of the game πŸ€”. I don't get why they need to make it so complicated. Seven rounds and then a play-off series? It sounds like just a money grab to me πŸ˜’. What's wrong with just having a straight-up season where everyone plays each other once? Less travel, less fatigue... less drama πŸ’Έ. And what's the point of all these trophies? It's not like it's gonna make that much difference in the grand scheme πŸ€‘. Just give me some good ol' fashioned rugby and let's be done with it πŸ‘.

Yaaas, it's gonna be a fantastic season! I'm so hyped for Wigan Warriors and the rest of the teams to show off their skills 🀩πŸ’ͺ. This new format is gonna make every game count, and I love that the teams are competing for more than just the title – they're also fighting for a spot in the Grand Final πŸ†. The added play-off series is gonna be so intense! πŸ’₯ I'm rooting for Wigan to defend their title, but I know Leeds Rhinos are gonna give them a tough challenge πŸ˜…. Bring it on! πŸ’ͺ

OMG, I'm so hyped for the new Women's Super League season 🀩! Changing up the format is a great idea, it's gonna be so much more competitive and exciting to watch. The treble that Wigan Warriors achieved last season was insane, I hope they can do it again this year πŸ’ͺ! And with the league leaders shield already on the line from week one, every game matters as Tom said πŸ“Š. Can't wait to see how the teams adapt to the new format and which ones will be the dark horses this year πŸ€”πŸ’₯

πŸ€” u guys think wigan warriors are gonna be able to defend their title? they were on fire last season but now its gonna get super competitive with this new format. i love how they're trying to increase competition tho, hope it brings some exciting games for us fans πŸ‰πŸ’ͺ

omg, just thinking about the Women's Super League is giving me goosebumps! 🀩 back in my day, we didn't have all these fancy rules and play-off series... I remember watching the Warriors win that treble last season and it was absolute pandemonium in the stadium!!! πŸŽ‰ but I gotta say, this new format sounds like a game-changer. more competition = more excitement! πŸ’ͺ and who doesn't love the idea of every game mattering? πŸ˜‚ can't wait to see how it all plays out this season... brings back memories of watching my fave teams battle it out on TV πŸ“Ί

πŸ€” I'm kinda stoked about the revamped format for the Women's Super League - it sounds like they're trying to make every game count and build momentum across the season. The idea that the winners of the top group get a head start by lifting the League Leaders' Shield is a nice touch too πŸ†. However, I'm not sure if I love the new play-off series bit... seems like it could lead to some extra stress for the teams at the bottom of the table 😬. Still, it's always exciting to see women's rugby gain more traction and attention - let's hope Wigan can come out on top against Leeds Rhinos! πŸ’ͺ

omg, like can't wait for the new season of women's super league 🀩πŸ’ͺ! i think the new format is gonna be so intense πŸ”₯ it's gonna be all about who can get that top spot and automatic qualifing for the grand final πŸ†. personally, i'm rooting for wigan warriors πŸ’― they were on fire last season and i think they'll give leeds rhinos a run for their money πŸ‘Š what i do know is it's gonna be a wild ride with 7 rounds of fixtures and all that jazz 🀯 can't wait to see the teams in action and who'll come out on top πŸ†πŸ‘

Omg 🀩 I'm so hyped for the new season of the Women's Super League! πŸ’ͺ🏽 The revamped format is going to be lit πŸ”₯, with every game counting and momentum building up throughout the season. It's going to be intense ⚑️ as teams battle it out for the top spots. Wigan Warriors vs Leeds Rhinos on May 16 is already giving me major league vibes 🏈. But I'm also low-key rooting for York Valkyrie πŸ’•, they've got some talented players and I think they could pull off a few upsets 😜. Bring it on! βš”οΈ
