Weather tracker: Arctic air grips Europe as severe winds batter Corsica

Europe Braces for Frigid Temps as Arctic Chill Grips Region.

Temperatures plummeted across Europe on New Year's Eve, with double-digit negatives recorded in central regions. Heavy snowfall blanketed parts of eastern and central Europe, causing disruption in Poland, Ukraine, and other areas. The drop in temperatures is expected to continue this week as an Arctic air mass sweeps southward across the continent.

The cold snap is predicted to be severe, with average temperatures plummeting by 5C (9F) across much of Europe. In some regions, such as central and north-eastern Europe, temperatures will fall a whopping 10C (18F) below average, making it feel even colder when wind chill is factored in.

The effects of the cold air are not limited to Europe, however. South Korea also experienced snowfall, with flights and ferries cancelled due to strong winds and significant wind shear on Jeju island.

Meanwhile, Corsica has been hit hard by remarkably strong winds. Gusts of 60mph battered L'Île-Rousse, while gusts reaching 100mph were recorded in the Cap Corse region. The unusual combination of high pressure positioned over France and a low-pressure system in the Gulf of Genoa created a unique atmospheric setup that drove cold air through the Rhône valley, accelerating it in a "Venturi-like" fashion before directing it towards Corsica.

The contrast between these systems funneled cold air through the narrow constraints of the Rhône valley, causing it to accelerate rapidly. The resulting winds were then curved eastward around the low-pressure system and directed toward the Balagne and Cap Corse regions of Corsica.

OMG, I feel for the people in Eastern Europe right now 🥶😓. They're gonna be stuck at home with no power because it's freezing outside ❄️. Like, I get it, the cold snap is extreme, but can't they just invest in some better heating systems? 😩 And what about the snowflakes? Are they even fun to play with anymore 🌨️? Idk how Corsica handles those super strong winds tho 💨🌪️. Some people's homes are literally being rocked by 100mph gusts whoa! 😲 I guess it's just another example of nature's crazy power, right? 🌟

😏 This whole "Arctic Chill" thing sounds like a big ol' setup to me... I mean, have you seen the temps dropping? 10C below average in some areas? That's just too convenient. And what's with all these strong winds on Jeju island and Corsica? It's like they're trying to distract us from something else.

And let's not forget about that "Venturi-like" effect... sounds like a fancy way of saying "they deliberately created this weather pattern". I'm not buying it. This cold snap is more than just a coincidence, my friends. There's some hidden agenda at play here 😊.

brrr 🥶 just saw those temps plummet across europe on new years eve... feels like winter is here to stay ❄️ anyways, think it's cool how weather patterns can get so intense, especially with all that arctic air moving around 😮 guess that explains why corsica got slammed by those crazy winds 💨 hope everyone stays warm & safe this week 🙏

Ugh, I'm tellin' ya 🤣, this cold snap is crazy! Back in my day, we thought 20 below was bad news, but now it's like, double digits? 😲 What's next? Snow in the UK? I remember when that was a rare sight. Anyway, gotta feel for all those folks in Eastern Europe, Poland and Ukraine are gonna take a hit. And South Korea too, poor Jeju island 😔. Wind shear on flights is just not what you want to deal with when you're tryin' to get somewhere. Corsica though, wow 100mph winds? That's insane 💨! Can't believe the science behind it all, sounds like some crazy weather setup 🌪️. Guess we should be glad our own winters aren't as extreme... for now 😅

Brrr, can't believe how crazy cold Europe is being right now 😅! I mean, I knew winter was coming, but not like this 🤯. Temperatures plummeting by 5C or more? That's just harsh, especially with those strong winds on Corsica... that sounds wild 🌪️! South Korea getting snow too, gotta feel for the folks there 👍. Just hope it doesn't cause any major issues with transportation and whatnot. I mean, who needs a New Year's celebration when you've got sub-zero temps to deal with 😂?
