Europe Braces for Frigid Temps as Arctic Chill Grips Region.
Temperatures plummeted across Europe on New Year's Eve, with double-digit negatives recorded in central regions. Heavy snowfall blanketed parts of eastern and central Europe, causing disruption in Poland, Ukraine, and other areas. The drop in temperatures is expected to continue this week as an Arctic air mass sweeps southward across the continent.
The cold snap is predicted to be severe, with average temperatures plummeting by 5C (9F) across much of Europe. In some regions, such as central and north-eastern Europe, temperatures will fall a whopping 10C (18F) below average, making it feel even colder when wind chill is factored in.
The effects of the cold air are not limited to Europe, however. South Korea also experienced snowfall, with flights and ferries cancelled due to strong winds and significant wind shear on Jeju island.
Meanwhile, Corsica has been hit hard by remarkably strong winds. Gusts of 60mph battered L'Île-Rousse, while gusts reaching 100mph were recorded in the Cap Corse region. The unusual combination of high pressure positioned over France and a low-pressure system in the Gulf of Genoa created a unique atmospheric setup that drove cold air through the Rhône valley, accelerating it in a "Venturi-like" fashion before directing it towards Corsica.
The contrast between these systems funneled cold air through the narrow constraints of the Rhône valley, causing it to accelerate rapidly. The resulting winds were then curved eastward around the low-pressure system and directed toward the Balagne and Cap Corse regions of Corsica.
