‘We do not want to be Americans’: Greenland parties reject Trump’s threats

Greenland's Five Parties Unite Against US Overlordship Threats

In a joint statement issued by all five parties elected to Greenland's parliament, the island's future is being firmly asserted as one of its own people. The move comes in response to repeated threats from US President Donald Trump to take control of the strategic Danish autonomous territory.

"We emphasise once again our desire for the US contempt for our country to end," said the statement. "We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders." The parties have made it clear that they will not be swayed by external pressure and that their future must be decided by themselves.

The leaders also highlighted the need for a fair and comprehensive political debate, ensuring that the rights of the people are secured. However, no date has yet been set for the meeting, which was initially scheduled to take place in February.

Trump's renewed push for Greenland comes after US military intervention in Venezuela, raising concerns among the island's 57,000 inhabitants. Many of whom aim to eventually become an independent nation. A 2009 agreement between Greenland and Denmark explicitly recognised Greenlanders' right to independence if they choose, but differing opinions on how and when to achieve it.

The coalition currently in power in Greenland is not in favour of hasty independence, while the only opposition party, Naleraq, wants to cut ties as quickly as possible. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that an American takeover of Greenland would mark the end of NATO.

As tensions continue to rise, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is due to meet next week with Denmark's foreign minister and representatives from Greenland. However, it appears that Trump's plans for a military presence in the island under a 1951 agreement with fellow NATO member Denmark are not enough to guarantee its defence.

🤯 This US President Donald Trump is seriously playing with fire 🚨. I mean, who does he think he is, threatening to take control of Greenland? It's like he thinks it's some kind of game show prize or something 🎲. Newsflash, dude: Greenland is not just a territory, it's a sovereign nation with its own people and their own future 🌟.

And what's with the whole "we don't want to be Americans, we don't want to be Danes" vibe? Like, hello, you're already an important part of the Danish kingdom, but that doesn't mean you have to roll over just because some US politician is making a big show out of it 🙄. I think Greenland needs to stand up for itself and assert its own identity 👊.

And let's be real, who's gonna take control of this place? Trump himself? 🤣 Please. The US military is not exactly known for their subtlety when it comes to taking over foreign territories 💥. It's time for Greenland to show some backbone and stand up for its rights 💪.

😩 I feel so bad for the ppl of Greenland, they're already struggling to balance their identity w/ being part of this global village... and now these threats from the US?! 🤯 I mean, I get it, Greenland's got strategic value & all that, but does the world need an American takeover? 🙅‍♂️ Can't we just respect their sovereignty & let 'em figure out what works for them? 💡 I'm reminded of when my kids were little, they used to say "we don't wanna be told what to do"... and now I see that in the Greenlanders too! 🤗 It's time for us all to listen & respect their right to self-governance, even if it means we won't always agree w/ them. 🌎

man... this whole thing got me thinking about identity and what it means to be part of something bigger than ourselves 🤔. like, is being a Greenlander even tied to being Danish? or are they two separate things entirely? i mean, the people in Greenland seem pretty clear that they want their own autonomy, but there's this underlying pressure from the US and Denmark that's trying to pull them back into the fold 💸. it's like, can you really expect a nation to just roll over when its own people have a say in how they're governed? 🤷‍♂️ or is it more about maintaining the status quo for the sake of stability and security?

I'm telling you, this whole thing is super suspicious 🤔. I mean, what's really going on here? Trump thinks he can just waltz in and take over Greenland like it's some kind of colony? Newsflash, dude: that's not how the world works anymore! 🚫 The fact that all five parties are uniting against him is like a big ol' middle finger to his plans. And don't even get me started on this whole NATO thing – it's like they're trying to keep us in the dark about what's really going down 🔮.

I'm also low-key worried about the 2009 agreement and how that's being used as leverage here. I mean, are we supposed to just blindly trust that our government is looking out for us? 🤷‍♀️ Not on my watch! This whole situation feels like a classic case of smoke and mirrors – they're just trying to distract us from the real issue at hand while they pull the strings behind the scenes 🕵️‍♂️.

Yaaas! 🙌 The people of Greenland are totally owning their destiny here 🌟! I mean, who wouldn't want to be free from external influence and make their own decisions? #IndependenceIsKey 🚀 It's amazing to see the five parties come together and assert their will 💪. Trump's threats are just fuel for the fire 🔥, and I'm loving how Greenlanders are standing firm on their rights 👊. Let's hope they can find a way to make this work and become an independent nation 🌍 #GreenlandDeservesBetter #USOversteppingBoundaries 😒

omg u guys can u believe this!!! 🤯 america is trying to take over greenland AGAIN?!?! like, what even is trump's problem? 🤷‍♂️ i mean, Greenland wants to be free and make their own decisions, and america is just all like "nope, we're gonna control you or whatever". 😒 it's so annoying.

i think it's kinda cool that the greenlanders are standing up for themselves though 🙌 they've been trying to become independent for ages, and now they finally have a chance. and i love how their parties are all united against america's plans - like, yeah we get it, you're not gonna take over our land 😂.

i'm also kinda concerned about the US military presence in venezuela tho 🚨 it's not cool that they're using it as leverage to try and control other countries. and what's with all these agreements and treaties? can't america just respect everyone else's borders for once?!? 🤦‍♂️

I'm really impressed by how united Greenland's people are on this 🙌! They're totally owning their future and saying no to US control, which is kinda awesome. It's like they're taking a step back from the whole "us vs them" mentality and embracing their own identity as Greenlanders 💚.

And I think it's also super smart of them to hold onto that 2009 agreement – it's like they've got a solid foundation to fall back on if things get too heated 🤝. Plus, with Denmark and NATO on the same page, there should be some real weight behind their concerns about an American takeover 😬.

I'm a bit curious to see how this all plays out, especially with Marco Rubio meeting up with Denmark's foreign minister and Greenland reps next week ⏰. Will it lead to more diplomacy or just more noise? Only time will tell 🤔

I'm like totally on team Greenland right now 🤩🌿 they're standing up for themselves and refusing to be controlled by anyone else, you know? It's all about self-determination and being in charge of your own destiny. Trump's threats are just a big ol' slap in the face, but I reckon the Greenlanders are gonna make some noise and not let him get away with it 😤👊

It's interesting that there's this divide among the parties - one wants independence ASAP while the others think it should happen at a slower pace. Maybe they can find common ground and have a super productive debate about what's best for Greenland? 🤝💬

I'm also thinking, what if the US just backs off and respects their sovereignty? That would be a major win for Greenland and a great lesson for anyone who thinks they can bully others around 💪🌟
