US to expand passport revocations for parents who owe child support, AP sources say

US Expansion of Passport Revocation for Unpaid Child Support to Hit New Heights

The US government is on the cusp of a major overhaul, poised to significantly boost enforcement of a 30-year-old law allowing the revocation of passports for parents who owe substantial child support. As of next month, the State Department will begin proactively revoking passports - without the need for an individual to apply or seek assistance - based on data shared by the Health and Human Services Department.

The threshold for revocation has been set at a staggering $100,000 in past-due child support, but officials warn that if this amount is lowered further, the number of those affected will skyrocket. Currently, it's estimated that fewer than 500 individuals fall into this category - but those fortunate enough to avoid having their passports revoked can do so by entering into a payment plan with HHS.

The State Department claims it's simply "deadbeat parents need to pay their child support arrears" and sees the new measures as a means to rectify long-standing obligations. The Passport Denial Program has collected nearly $621 million in past-due payments since its inception in 1996, including nine collections exceeding $300,000.

Critically, this change signals that enforcement will now be more proactive, relying less on individuals taking the initiative to address their child support debt. It remains to be seen how widespread this new policy will be, but with thousands potentially affected, one thing is clear: those owing child support will face significant scrutiny from the government in the coming months.

The announcement marks a significant escalation of US efforts to combat child support arrears, and its impact could be felt far beyond individual cases. As one official noted, "it's a new era" for the Passport Denial Program - and that change is expected to bring about tangible results for those who have been struggling to meet their financial obligations.

🤔 think this is gonna hit people hard, especially those struggling to make ends meet. 100k is still a lot of money but I guess when you're talking life-changing debt like child support, every little helps 🤑. wonder how many ppl will take advantage of the payment plans tho? should be better than revoking passports tho 😬

I wonder if this new policy will really make a difference 😐. It seems like it's just another way to crack down on people, but maybe it'll get some folks to pay up 🤑. I mean, $100,000 is a pretty steep fine, so only the most serious debtors will be affected... right? 👀

It's kinda harsh that they're revoking passports without even asking first tho 🤷‍♀️. I feel bad for those who can't afford to pay right now, 'cause it'll make their lives way harder 💔. But hey, at least the government is trying to collect some cash, right? 💸

omg this is so crazy 🤯 i mean on one hand its awesome that theyre cracking down on people who owe child support cuz thats just not right for those kids to suffer like that. but at the same time i feel bad for ppl who might be struggling financially and didnt even realize how much they owed 🤑 100k is a lot of money! anyway i guess this new policy is supposed to help ppl get back on track by forcing them to pay up and enter into payment plans. fingers crossed it actually works out for the best 😅

idk why they're making it so hard for people to pay off their child support... its not like they owe $100,000 overnight lol. i feel bad for the parents who are already behind and dont know where to turn. this new policy is gonna make things super stressful for them 🤕. also, 621 million in payments since 1996? thats a lot of money that could be going towards actual support instead of just debt collection 💸. its not like people are just being reckless with their finances... life happens and sometimes we fall behind 🤷‍♀️.

omg can u believe this?! 😱 they're revoking passports now without ur having to ask? like what even is the point of having a passport if it's just gonna get taken away from u? 🤷‍♀️ i feel so bad for these ppl who r struggling to pay child support, but shouldn't there be more help available instead of punishment? 🤔 idk about this new policy tho... maybe its a good thing? 💸 at least the gov is collecting $621m in payments since 1996, that's some serious dough! 🤑 anyway, im just gonna sit back and watch this drama unfold 🎬

Ugh, I dont know how much more of these crazy laws can take our system 🤯. A $100k debt in child support and your passport gets revoked? Thats just not right 😒. And now they're gonna start revoking passports without the person even asking for it? What's next? Revoking their rights or something? 🚫

And I'm all for people paying their debts, but this is just so aggressive. It's like, you get one chance to mess up and suddenly your whole life is ruined 😩. And what about those who are genuinely trying to pay it back but are struggling? Are they gonna be penalized too? 🤔

I'm not saying anyone owes child support, but this law just feels so unfair and heavy-handed 💸. Can't we find a better way to deal with these kinds of issues without resorting to such drastic measures? 🙄
