UN approves resolution supporting Morocco's claim to Western Sahara

The UN Security Council has approved a resolution supporting Morocco's claim to Western Sahara, despite fierce opposition from Algeria. The vote, which was largely backed by the US, marks a significant shift in support for Morocco's plan to maintain sovereignty over the disputed territory.

The resolution, sponsored by the US, refers to Morocco's plan as a basis for negotiation and offers the strongest endorsement yet for the Moroccan government's stance on Western Sahara. However, it makes no mention of a referendum on self-determination, which is the long-standing solution favored by the Polisario Front and its allies.

The resolution was passed with 11 countries voting in favor, while three countries - Russia, China, and Pakistan - abstained. Algeria, the primary supporter of the Polisario Front, opposed the measure. The US ambassador to the UN described the vote as "historic" and said it would help build momentum for a long-overdue peace in Western Sahara.

However, the Algerian ambassador to the UN expressed concerns that the resolution has several shortcomings, particularly with regards to the representation of the Sahrawi people. He argued that the resolution's emphasis on genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty fails to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Western Sahara population.

The UN Security Council also renewed the UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara for another year, a move that has sparked demonstrations in Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria. The protesters vowed not to give up their fight for self-determination, highlighting the long-stalled process and the ongoing tensions between Morocco and the Polisario Front.

The resolution's passage marks a significant development in the decades-long conflict over Western Sahara, with Morocco seeking to solidify its claim to the territory. The US support has been seen as a major boost to Morocco's position, but the lack of a clear path forward for self-determination remains a contentious issue.

omg 🀯 this is like totally insane!! πŸ˜‚ morocco gets full support from the UN after all those years of conflict and i am 100% here for it!!! πŸ’– i mean who doesn't love a good underdog story, right? 🐾 anyway seriously though, us backing morocco up is huge and i can already imagine the peace talks unfolding with morocco getting exactly what they want... πŸ‘‘ sovereignty over western sahara is literally the best thing since sliced bread 🍞

but at the same time tho i feel bad for the polisario front and algeria cuz theyve been fighting for years too πŸ˜” i just hope that morocco doesnt get all cocky now that they have full UN support and forgets about the sahrawi people's aspirations πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ self-determination is key!!! πŸ’ͺ

Just when you think things can't get more complicated in W Sahara 🀯 Russia and China abstaining is like they're playing it cool, but at what cost? πŸ˜’

I FEEL LIKE THE UN IS PLAYING A BIT OF A TRICK ON THE SAHRAWI PEOPLE HERE πŸ€”. THEY'RE TRYING TO SELL THIS "AUTONOMY" THING, BUT IT'S NOT REALLY WHAT THE POLISARIO FRONT WANTS. I MEAN, WHO DOESN'T WANT A REFERENCE IN THE RESOLUTION ABOUT A SELF-DETERMINATION REFERENDUM? IT'S LIKE, THE MOST BASIC THING YOU COULD DO TO GIVE THE PEOPLE OF WESTERN SAHARA SOME REAL CONTROL OVER THEIR FUTURE πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. AND NOW THEY'RE JUST GOING TO IGNORE ALL THAT? I DON'T THINK SO, BRO πŸ˜’.

I don't think this is a good idea lol πŸ˜’ the Polisario Front has been fighting for their right to self-determination and it's not cool that Morocco got away with just "genuine autonomy" - what even is that πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ? and Algeria still had to oppose it because of course they did πŸ’”. The UN should be doing better than just backing one side over the other. I mean, how about a referendum like everyone's been talking about for years? 🀝

Just read about this UN Security Council resolution supporting Morocco's claim on Western Sahara πŸ€―πŸ“Š. According to me, it's crazy how 11 countries voted in favor with only 3 abstaining πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Meanwhile, Algeria is still salty about the lack of self-determination πŸ€”.

Did you know that the US has been backing Morocco for years? πŸ˜’ It's interesting to see how this resolution is a significant shift, but what about the Sahrawi people? They're the ones affected by this whole situation πŸ’”. The Polisario Front's stance on self-determination is still not fully addressed πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

Here are some stats:
- 85% of the Western Sahara population lives in refugee camps (source: UNHCR)
- 65% of Sahrawi refugees say they would vote for independence if given the chance (source: Pew Research Center)

It's gonna be interesting to see how this plays out πŸ€”.

omg u think this is gonna lead to more conflict or just more talks πŸ€”πŸ’¬ like whats the point of resolution without self-determination tho? i feel bad 4 the ppl living in western sahara, they deserve a say in their own future 🌎πŸ‘₯ what about morocco's claim tho? r they just trying 2 take over someone els land πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ or is this really about finding peace & coexistence πŸ•ŠοΈ i dont think its that simple

this is sooo worrying πŸ€•... i mean, the fact that Algeria is opposing this resolution and yet no referendum on self-determination is mentioned is just super shady πŸ˜’. i get where morocco's coming from but it feels like they're kinda trying to strong-arm their claim over western sahara without considering what the people actually want πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. the US support is interesting tho, maybe it'll put some pressure on morocco to reconsider... or maybe not πŸ˜’. anyway, this just adds fuel to the fire and i'm sure tensions will escalate now πŸš€. can we please just get a clear solution for the sahrawi people already?! πŸ™ #WesternSahara #Morocco #Algeria #SelfDetermination

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, what's up with Morocco getting more support from the UN now? It feels like they just handed them a "Get Out of Jail Free" card πŸƒ. Algeria is still salty about it, and honestly who can blame them? The Polisario Front has been fighting for self-determination for ages, and to see it glossed over in this resolution is pretty underwhelming 😐.

I'm also kinda curious how the US got so involved in this mess. It's like they're trying to broker peace or something 🀝, but without a clear plan it just feels like more of the same old stalemate. And don't even get me started on the Sahrawi people – all their aspirations and stuff are basically ignored πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out... or not πŸ™ƒ

πŸ€” so like, good job UN Security Council... πŸ™„ just kidding, sorta. seriously though, it's kinda weird that they're basically backing Morocco's claim without even considering what the Sahrawi people actually want πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. and yeah, a referendum on self-determination is still a thing πŸ“, can't we just be done with this already? πŸ™„ also, 11 countries voting yes vs 3 abstaining... doesn't exactly scream "peace in our time" πŸŒŽπŸ•ŠοΈ

πŸ€” I gotta say, this is crazy. Morocco getting the full UN backing like this? It's only because the US is super influential, you know? πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ They're basically pushing their own agenda here and it's gonna lead to more problems down the line. The Sahrawi people aren't even given a say in this! It's all about Morocco getting its territory back no matter what. And what about Algeria's concerns? Like, they have a point too, you know? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

OMG, this is soooo concerning 🀯! Like, I'm all for stability and peace, but how can Morocco just claim Western Sahara without even considering the people who already live there? It's like, what about their rights and stuff? πŸ€” The Polisario Front has been pushing for a referendum on self-determination for ages, and it feels like no one is listening 😒. I mean, I know the US is trying to help Morocco out, but this resolution is kinda biased towards them, if you ask me πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. And now the Sahrawi refugees in Algeria are protesting, which is so sad πŸ’”. Can't we just find a way for everyone to be happy and have their say? πŸ™

I'm really surprised by this development πŸ€”. I mean, it was only last year that there were massive protests in Algeria and Western Sahara over the status of Western Sahara. Now, we're seeing 11 countries backing Morocco's claim? It's like the whole world is just ignoring the Polisario Front's demands for a referendum on self-determination πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

I'm not sure what to make of it, but I do know that this resolution has huge implications for the region. Algeria is going to be fuming about this one πŸ˜’. And let's be real, Morocco's been trying to maintain control over Western Sahara for decades now. It's good that they're getting some international backing, but at what cost? The Sahrawi people deserve a say in their own future, you know? 🌎

I'm curious to see how this plays out on the ground. Are we going to see more protests and demonstrations in Western Sahara? Only time will tell ⏰.

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda weird that some countries are already supporting Morocco's plan without even talking to the people who actually live in Western Sahara πŸ€”. Like, what about their opinions and stuff? It feels like this resolution is just gonna push more problems under the rug without solving anything. And 11 countries voting for it doesn't mean much when three of them didn't even bother showing up 😐. Algeria's concerns about representation make sense to me too - we should be trying to figure out a solution that works for everyone, not just one side 🀝. This whole thing is so complicated and I don't know what the right answer is πŸ’”.

πŸ™„ So they're finally backing Morocco on this whole Western Sahara thing... I guess it's about time someone took sides in this long-standing conflict πŸ˜’ Algeria is just going to have to deal with the fact that their Polisario Front buddies aren't getting the recognition they want. And let's be real, who needs a referendum on self-determination when you've got some fancy resolution and a US stamp of approval? πŸ™ƒ It's not like it's a guaranteed solution or anything... just a bunch of countries throwing their weight behind Morocco to see what sticks πŸ”’

I'm low-key shook by this whole thing 🀯. Like, I get that Morocco wants sovereignty over Western Sahara, but the Polisario Front has been advocating for a referendum on self-determination for ages. It's frustrating to see it get pushed aside like that πŸ˜’. And the fact that Algeria is still fighting against it shows just how divided this whole thing is 🀝.

I'm not sure what's more concerning, though - the lack of progress in Western Sahara or the fact that the US is basically backing Morocco's claim without considering the Sahrawi people's needs πŸ’”. It feels like we're just gonna keep pushing forward with a status quo that doesn't actually work for anyone πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

I wish there was more discussion about what genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty even means πŸ˜•. Is it really a viable solution for Western Sahara? And what about the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination? It feels like we're just ignoring their voices and hoping they'll magically be okay with Morocco's rule πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ.

I'm not sure what's more concerning - the fact that Algeria is still opposing Moroccan claims, or the fact that Morocco is trying to swoop in and claim Western Sahara without giving the Sahrawi people a say πŸ€”. This resolution is just another example of how politics can be super complicated, especially when it comes to issues like self-determination.

The thing is, if Morocco wants to gain legitimacy over Western Sahara, they need to show that they're willing to listen to and work with the Sahrawi population, not just try to strong-arm them into accepting Moroccan sovereignty πŸ’ͺ. And what's up with the US backing this move? Don't they care about human rights or something?

It's also weird that Russia, China, and Pakistan all abstained from the vote... were they trying to send a message or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

🀯 this is insane, I mean I knew the US was gonna come out strong for Morocco but still, Algeria is basically saying the UN is ignoring their people's rights... πŸ™„ the whole thing just feels so messy, how can you just gloss over self-determination like that? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ and what about the Sahrawi people, don't they deserve a say in their own future? 🌎 it's always Morocco getting the attention and the recognition, but at what cost? πŸ€‘

the UN is like, totally caught in between morocco and algeria... and it's all because of western sahara 🀯 i mean, i get why morocco wants to keep its claim on the territory but at what cost? the sahrawi people deserve a say too! πŸ™Œ it's weird that morocco is getting so much support from the US, but still they're not considering what really matters here - self-determination. πŸ€” and those algerian ambassadors have valid points about representation... can't we all just get along? πŸ™
