Trump says 'we're reviewing everything' after Minneapolis killing as Republicans join calls for investigation – US politics live

President Donald Trump has stated that the federal government is "reviewing everything" in response to the second Minneapolis killing by federal agents, with Republicans joining calls for an independent investigation into the incident. The incident involved 37-year-old Alex Pretti, a registered nurse who was shot and killed by immigration officers.

Trump told the Wall Street Journal in a phone interview that he does not like "any shooting" but noted that Pretti had a powerful gun despite holding only a phone. When asked if federal agents acted appropriately, Trump replied, "We're looking, we're reviewing everything and will come out with a determination."

The Trump administration has faced criticism for its handling of immigration issues, particularly in Minnesota, where the state's Somali population is targeted by allegations of fraud. The president has engaged in explicitly racist rhetoric to justify sending agents into the state.

A GoFundMe page set up to support Pretti's family has raised over $1 million, with many people expressing outrage and concern about the killing. Democratic politicians have called for an independent investigation into the incident, while Republicans are also joining calls for a deeper probe.

In a hearing later today, a federal judge will consider a lawsuit filed by the state of Minnesota and cities of Minneapolis and St Paul to halt the immigration crackdown in the state, citing concerns over the presence of 3,000 ICE agents in the area. The lawsuit argues that this is an unprecedented abuse of constitutional powers.

my heart goes out to alex pretti's family, it sounds like such a tragic thing happened and they deserve so much more than what happened 🤕. i can imagine how scary and confusing it must be for them right now, losing someone you love in such a senseless way. it's heartbreaking that he was just a regular person doing his job as a nurse and had to end up in a situation like this.

i feel like we need more empathy and understanding when it comes to people who are struggling with the immigration system, many of them are just trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. it's not fair that they're being targeted and put through all this stress and trauma 🤝. i hope that somehow, someway, justice is served for alex and his family, but more importantly, let's work towards creating a system where people can feel safe and supported ❤️.

I'm still not sure what's more concerning, the fact that Alex Pretti got killed by immigration officers or Trump's response to it 🤯. I mean, come on, dude! You're saying you don't like any shooting, but then bring up a guy with a phone and a gun? That's just tone deaf. And those comments about "reviewing everything" sound like he's trying to sweep this under the rug instead of taking responsibility.

And can we talk about how Trump's rhetoric on immigration is so problematic? It feels like he's perpetuating some pretty hateful stereotypes. I'm not sure what kind of America he wants to build, but it definitely doesn't feel inclusive or fair right now 😕.

man this is getting outta hand 🙅‍♂️, all these republicans jumping on the bandwagon now? come on they were the ones sleepin' at the wheel while trump was runnin' wild with immigration policies 😒. and what's with the gun thing? didn't he know pretti had a phone in his hand? 🤣 anyway, it's about time for an independent investigation, can't let politics get in the way of justice 👮‍♂️. 1 mil on gofundme is crazy though, that family's gonna be set for life 💸.

🤔 So Trump's saying they're reviewing everything but doesn't really sound like he's taking responsibility or anything... and what's with the gun thing? Like a phone's not even a gun? 📱😂 And yeah, I don't trust him on this one at all. It feels like another attempt to deflect blame while keeping those ICE agents in Minnesota just as they are. This whole immigration issue is really getting out of hand... and honestly who needs 3k ICE agents patrolling the state anyway? 🤷‍♀️

omg just heard about alex pretti... i cant believe what happened to him. as a nurse who's helped ppl through tough times, u would think ur safe from that kinda thing but apparently not even in ur own city lol anyway back to trump he seems so outta touch with reality - "reviewing everything" sounds like some generic cop speak to me kinda wish there was a more concrete plan instead of just "we'll come out with a determination"

i've been following this whole immigration issue in minnesota and it's got me shook. allegations of fraud targeting the somali community is just crazy - u can't just use racism as an excuse for bad policy. the fact that ppl are still raising money for alex's family shows how much ppl care about him and his loved ones

anyway, i'm glad democrats are pushing for an independent investigation. at least it feels like someone in power is actually listening to the concerns of the community. and honestly, cant wait to see what happens in that hearing today - hopefully they'll get some real answers

omg what's going on with alex pretti? I cant even believe he was shot by fed agents 🤯 like what happened to him? and trump saying they're reviewing everything but not giving us any info 🙄 i dont get why the gofundme page is making so much money tho, is it bc of his job or somethin'? 🤑 also im still wondering about those 3k ice agents in minneapolis, cant we just have a peaceful life without all that tension? 😩

this guy trumps words r so confusing can't he just say what's on his mind 😒 the fact that he doesn't like any shooting but then talks about alex pretti holding a powerful gun is weird... and why did immigration officers have to shoot him in the first place? they should've just called the cops or something! 🤷‍♂️

🤦‍♂️ u guys ever notice how ppl react differently when it's a celeb vs a regular joe? like Alex Pretti was just a nurse tryna do his job and get paid 🤷‍♂️, but Trump is the big cheese & he gets to say whatever he wants without 2nd thoughts 💁‍♂️. anywayz, i think an independent investigation is def needed here... 3k ICE agents in minnesota? that's straight up crazy talk 🚫. and yeah, $1 mil on gofundme is insane 🤑. can we pls just have a calm discussion about immigration policies without all the drama & hate speech? 🤗

🤦‍♂️ So Trump thinks a powerful gun only matters when it's held by someone with their hands on it? That's some clever logic 😒. And now he's acting like these immigration agents are above scrutiny because they're "just doing their job"? 🙄 Give me a break, Prez.

The fact that the administration is reviewing everything but isn't giving us any concrete answers just says a lot about how much they care about transparency (not). Meanwhile, we've got a GoFundMe page that's raking in over a million bucks because people are actually upset about this? 🤯 It's like Trump wants to make Alex Pretti's death all about immigration and racism, even though it's not entirely clear what happened here.

I'm glad Democrats are pushing for an independent investigation, but at the same time, I don't want any of these investigations to be politicized either. Can we just focus on figuring out what went down without turning this into a proxy war? 🤷‍♂️

come on people, what's the big deal? it's just a guy gettin killed by cops, not like they did anything wrong or sumthin 😂. trump's just sayin his usual thing, makin everyone think he's all about justice and equality, but we all know how that goes 🙄. republicans are just chasin votes, don't wanna be seen as racist so they jump on the bandwagon 💸. meanwhile minnesota is losin its mind with 3000 ice agents runnin around, it's like a scene from a movie 🤣. can we please just chill and have a calm conversation about this instead of tryna jump each other's throats? 😎

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened with Alex Pretti... 🤯 I mean, a registered nurse shot and killed by immigration officers? It's just not right. And Trump's response is giving me major déjà vu vibes - "reviewing everything" sounds like a weak attempt to address the issue without actually doing anything concrete.

I'm all for accountability and transparency, but this feels like another example of a system that's broken. The fact that Republicans are joining calls for an independent investigation is a good sign, though. It shows they're willing to look into this further and maybe hold some people in power accountable.

But let's not forget the bigger picture here - the Trump administration has been trying to crack down on immigration issues in Minnesota for ages, with allegations of targeting specific communities being totally out of line. We need to be vigilant about these kinds of practices and make sure our government is representing all its citizens fairly. 💯

🤔 This killing just shows how outta control our immigration system is 🚨... like what's going on with these ICE agents? They're supposed to be enforcing laws, not taking lives 😩. And Trump is all "we're reviewing everything" but that's just a cop-out 🙄... an independent investigation is long overdue.

And can we talk about how this guy was just walking down the street with his phone and got shot 💀? That's just crazy! The fact that he was a nurse too, just makes it even more senseless 😭. I'm so tired of politicians using these shootings as a way to justify their own actions 🙅‍♂️.

I've been following this issue for a while now and it just gets more and more disturbing 😓... like what's the end goal here? Are we really that afraid of immigrants? 🤷‍♀️ It's not right, man. We need to do better than this 👊.

I'm so concerned about Alex Pretti's family 🤕. This incident is just heartbreaking. I mean, a registered nurse who was killed by immigration officers? It's like, what are we even doing here? 😱 Trump's comments are just, like, totally tone deaf. He's all like "we're reviewing everything" but it feels like he's not actually taking this seriously. And the fact that Republicans are joining calls for an independent investigation is a good start, I guess 🤞. But, like, what about accountability? We need to know why this happened and who's responsible 💯. The GoFundMe page raising over $1 million is amazing, though - it shows people care 🙌.

I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE US RIGHT NOW!!! IT'S LIKE, ONE WRONG MOVE AND EVERYONE'S CALLING FOR AN INVESTIGATION!!! AND TRUMP'S TRYING TO SHAPE THE NARRATIVE BY SAYING HE DOESN'T LIKE "ANY SHOOTING"... GEEZ, THAT SOUNDS REALLY RATHER CONVENIENT. AND WITH 3,000 ICE AGENTS IN MINNESOTA, IT'S CLEAR THEY'RE TRYING TO PLAY A VAST POWER PLAY THERE. I FEEL SO BAD FOR ALEX PRETTI'S FAMILY - $1 MILLION RAISED ON GOFUNDME IS JUST AMAZING!!! BUT SERIOUSLY, WHY DO WE NEED SO MANY ICE AGENTS IN MINNESOTA? IT SEEMS LIKE THEY'RE TRYING TO DISPROPORTIONATELY TARGET THE SOMALI POPULATION. ANYWAY, LET'S WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN THAT HEARING TODAY...

🤕 this killing is just another example of how our system is failing people 🚨. I'm all for keeping our borders secure but not at the cost of innocent lives like Alex Pretti's 💔. It's ridiculous to say he had a powerful gun with only a phone, who does that?! 😂 anyway, Trump needs to take responsibility and acknowledge that his rhetoric has consequences 🤦‍♂️. The fact that ICE agents are patrolling our cities is just plain wrong 👮‍♂️. We need more accountability and transparency in our government, not just lip service 💬.

OMG u guyz!!!1! 🤯 I'm like totally shocked by what's goin on w/ the FBI 🚔 and immigration officers 👮‍♂️. Killing a ppl who didn't do nothin wrong? It's just not rite 🙅‍♀️. Alex Pretti was a nurse, 4 crying out loud! 🤕 He didnt deserve to die like that. The fact that Trump is sayin we r "reviewing everything" and wont comment is just laughable 😂. Can't he jus be honest w/ us?

The thing thats really got my back up is the immigration officers 👮‍♂️ were armed w/ a phone 📱 and still managed to shoot Alex 💀. That's like carryin a nuke in ur hand 🤯. It's just plain crazy 😱.

I dont care about politics, but this is jus plain cruel 😔. The GoFundMe page has raised so much money, but it's not enough 2 compensate for the loss of Alex's life 💔. We need 2 do better than this 👍

🤔 so Trumps just saying they're reviewing everything but its hard not to think he's dodging the question. and with Republicans joining calls for an independent investigation, it shows they might be getting cold feet too... or maybe they just dont wanna mess with a high profile case 🤑 anyway, it sucks that Alex Pretti had to lose his life like that. 1 million on GoFundMe is crazy tho 💸

I'm really concerned about this situation 🤕. It's disheartening to see another young life lost due to a tragedy like this. A registered nurse, who was just doing his job, was shot and killed by immigration officers 😔. The fact that the president is downplaying it by saying he doesn't like "any shooting" without fully acknowledging the circumstances is quite disturbing 🤕.

The Trump administration's handling of immigration issues in Minnesota is already a major issue, but this incident has really taken it to a different level 🔥. It's unacceptable that people are being targeted and treated unfairly based on their background or ethnicity 👎. The family of Alex Pretti deserves justice and answers about how this happened 💔.

I'm also worried about the $1 million raised for his family, which is just a small fraction of what they'll need to cope with their loss 🤑. We need real change here, not just empty words from politicians 🗣️. An independent investigation into this incident is long overdue ⏰.
