Thomas Tuchel would rather England lose than face red cards, coach says.
In a bid to avoid any unnecessary red cards in their final World Cup qualifier against Albania, Thomas Tuchel has prioritized discipline over results. The German head coach emphasized the importance of players thinking twice before committing fouls, particularly when an opponent is through on goal.
"We don't want any red cards," Tuchel said. "It's a big deal because if you get a red card, you're out of the tournament. We are in a position where we have already secured our spot in the World Cup and we need to think about the bigger picture."
Tuchel has taken note of Cristiano Ronaldo's potential two-game ban at the World Cup after being dismissed against Ireland, and he wants his England players to avoid similar situations.
"We know how it is when you get a red card," Tuchel said. "It can be devastating. We don't want that to happen here."
England, who have already won their qualifying group, are set to face Albania without Ezri Konsa due to a minor knock. Marc Guรฉhi's absence means Dan Burn could partner John Stones in central defense.
Tuchel is weighing up changes to his starting XI, with the possibility of Adam Wharton or Jordan Henderson coming in for Elliot Anderson in midfield. Jude Bellingham has been linked with replacing Morgan Rogers in the No 10 position, having started in the win over Serbia and impressing alongside Phil Foden when Eberechi Eze scored England's second goal.
Tuchel is keen to avoid making major changes, but he recognizes the need for a fresh approach. "We can't allow ourselves to run less," he said. "We have only this camp to keep things going for ourselves."
The German coach also expressed his admiration for Jude Bellingham, saying that he will always be an impact player due to his exceptional talent. Tuchel emphasized the importance of understanding and familiarity within the team, suggesting that introducing new players at this stage could hinder their performance.
"We didn't know 100% what was coming from Serbia, but we identify ourselves through our high press and work rate," Tuchel said. "I just felt Morgan played the last matches together with Declan and Harry Kane, and they had an understanding in the middle... Jude can start any match for us, there is no doubt."
