The Ashes 2025 fifth Test - day five: Snicko controversy strikes England again as Australia's Jake Weatherald avoids dismissal

A contentious decision from the Snicko technology has England fans on edge once again, as Australia's Jake Weatherald was deemed not out despite an apparent catch by the English batsmen. The incident occurred in the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with Australia chasing a target of 160 to win the match.

Weatherald, on 16, was given the benefit of the doubt after the ball appeared to pass through his bat in mid-air. However, the Snicko technology, which uses audio signals to detect whether the ball has passed the batsman's glove or bat, ruled in Weatherald's favor. The decision sparked debate among cricket enthusiasts and commentators alike, with many questioning the accuracy of the Snicko system.

England's woes deepened as Australia continued their charge towards victory, with the hosts needing just 33 runs to seal a stunning come-from-behind win. For England fans, it was another day of frustration and disappointment, as their team struggles to make the most of its dominance in the series.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by the Snicko technology, which has been at the center of controversy on several occasions throughout the Ashes series. While designed to improve the accuracy of umpiring decisions, the system has also sparked criticism for its reliability and consistency.

As the match draws to a close, England will be hoping to stage a late resurgence and avoid another humiliating defeat. However, with Australia in commanding position, it remains to be seen whether they can hold on to their advantage and secure a win that would send a significant message to the cricket world.

🤔 i'm telling u, the snicko tech is a joke 🚮. how can they not even get this one right? jake weatherald was clearly caught out but those fancy audio signals just decided to look the other way 🙅‍♂️. it's like they're trying to ruin the game for us fans 🤦‍♂️. and now england is struggling because of it? not cool ⚠️. i'm so sick of watching these umpires make mistakes and then just shrug it off 😒. can't we just have a fair game for once?! 🙏

🤯 I mean, what's going on with this Snicko tech?! 🙄 It's just another thing where they're getting it wrong and costing England the game. 16 on 0 and they still manage to get him in! 🤦‍♂️ That ball looked like it was through his bat for sure! And what's even more frustrating is that all their dominance in the series means nothing if they can't make these basic calls right. 💔 It's just one of those days where everything seems to be going wrong, and I'm not sure how many times England can keep getting screwed over by this technology 🤷‍♂️. They need to get it sorted out ASAP or else they'll be left with nothing but bitter taste in their mouths 🍸.

I don’t usually comment but I just had to say something about this Snicko thing 🤔. I mean, I get why they want to improve accuracy and all that but sometimes it feels like tech is just gonna make things more confusing. Like, who's right? The system or the human eyes on the field? It's not like we're watching a football match where you can just look at the replay and see what happened 😂.

I'm just thinking about how much stress these players must be under, always having to rely on some machine to make a call. And for what? So they can win by one run? It feels so... human-less 🤖. Can't we just have a good old-fashioned discussion between the players and umpires or something? I don’t know, maybe I'm just old-school 😊

Ugh, what's up with Snicko tech? Like, I get it, accuracy is key, but can't they just make sure the ball doesn't pass through someones bat like 5 times already?! 😩 It's so frustrating for fans, and I'm sure England fans are having a tough time after that catch. The system needs serious work, imo...I mean, how hard is it to detect if a ball passes through a batsman's glove or not? 🤔 And yeah, this one just screams controversy. Australia getting the win, and we're all wondering what really happened on the field 🙃

I'm telling ya, Snicko is a joke 🤡! They're gonna blow it every time something doesn't go right and some dude's gotta make a split-second call. I mean, what if they get it wrong again? England's fans can take only so much 😩. The Aussies are just lapping up these decisions like they're on tap at the pub. And let's be real, this technology is still a work in progress. They should've stuck with the old school way of doing things – a clear head and a good pair of eyes 👓. This Snicko business is just a bunch of hooey 🙄!

I'm soooo salty about this one 🤦‍♂️! I mean, what even is Snicko's logic here? One minute the ball is passing through Weatherald's bat, next it's like... not out at all?! 😡 It's just not fair to England fans. We're already stressed enough watching our team struggle, and now this Snicko tech comes along and makes us question everything 🤔. I'm still shaking my head about that one call... Australia's got the win, but it feels like they got lucky 💀. Can't wait for the next match, hope England can get their mojo back ⚡️!
