Toei's Long-Running Tokusatsu Franchise "Super Sentai" May Come to an End After 50 Years
In a shocking turn of events, Japan's beloved tokusatsu franchise "Super Sentai" may be coming to a close after 50 years on the air. According to reports from Japanese newspapers The Sankei Shimbun and Kyodo news agency, series owner Toei is ending the series with the conclusion of its current show "No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger."
Citing budgetary concerns, as well as profits failing to match production costs for merchandise, events such as movies, and live shows tours, Toei has decided it's time to wrap up this iconic franchise that has been entertaining fans since 1975 with "Himitsu Sentai Gorenger."
The last series is set to be broadcast in the coming months, but neither Toei nor its current network TV Asahi have commented on the news. However, rumors are circulating about a potential soft reboot and rebrand of the franchise which could pave the way for an entirely new show.
The "Super Sentai" franchise has been closely linked with another Japanese series "Kamen Rider," and also holds significant cultural importance as it is seen to be a stepping stone for young actors looking to kick-start their careers in film and TV. The connection between these two shows is especially relevant given that the current owner of the "Power Rangers" franchise, Hasbro, hasn't aired a new series since 2023's "Power Rangers Cosmic Fury."
However, it appears a reboot of "Super Sentai" might become possible depending on whether Toei decides to start with an entirely new name or format.

and I'm kinda surprised, but also not really shocked? I mean, even Power Rangers, which is like a big brother to it, isn't doing well in recent years. The thing is, Toei might be making some smart moves by rebooting the franchise with a new name or format, so we'll see how that goes

But it's sad to think that a show that has been around for half a century will finally come to an end. It's had such a huge impact on Japanese pop culture and has launched the careers of many young actors. Fingers crossed they can make the reboot work

The fact that they're citing budget concerns and merchandise not matching production costs makes sense, but it still feels weird to think of this franchise being wrapped up like a chapter in a book

I'm totally down for a potential soft reboot or rebrand though - as long as it stays true to the spirit of those epic battles between good and evil

. If Toei decides to start fresh, they could try to appeal to a new generation of fans while still respecting the legacy of the original show
