Spotify’s About the Song offers context and trivia about your favorite tracks

Spotify Unveils 'About the Song', A New Feature That Offers Context and Trivia About Your Favorite Tracks.

In a bid to further enrich its music streaming experience, Spotify has launched "About the Song", a new feature that provides users with additional context and trivia about their favorite tracks. Available as part of the platform's premium service, "About the Song" can be accessed in the Now Playing view by clicking on the "..." icon next to a song title.

The feature offers bite-sized cards filled with interesting facts and background information about each song, including details harvested from third-party sources using machine learning algorithms. According to Spotify, these facts are sourced and cited, ensuring transparency for users. However, it remains unclear whether free users will have access to this feature in the future or when it is expected to leave beta.

"About the Song" marks another attempt by Spotify to build value-added features around its core music streaming service. Following the introduction of expanded Song Credits and SongDNA late last year, which provide listeners with more information about song creators and connections between them, "About the Song" further solidifies Spotify's focus on enhancing users' musical experiences.

The new feature also benefits from Spotify's recent acquisition of WhoSampled in November 2025. This purchase has granted Spotify access to a vast database of sample credits, which it can now incorporate into its existing features like SongDNA and "About the Song".

I just saw this new thing on Spotify and I'm kinda stoked 😊. So they've got this new feature called "About the Song" that gives you all these cool facts about the songs you're listening to... it's like having a music encyclopedia in your pocket, I guess. I mean, I was curious about how they get these facts, so I checked online and apparently they just use some machine learning algorithms to scrape them from third-party sources. Pretty cool, right? It makes sense that they'd want to add this feature with their recent acquisition of WhoSampled, it's like a match made in heaven for music nerds like me 🎵. Can't wait to dive into it and learn more about the songs I love... 👍

🤔 So I think this is a cool move by Spotify, right? They're trying to make music streaming more than just listening to tracks, they're trying to create an experience. And with "About the Song", they're providing users with more depth and context about their favorite tunes. It's like, you know how sometimes you'll be listening to a song and you'll think 'who wrote that?' or 'what's this sample?'? Now Spotify's got the answers right there in one place. 🎵 And I'm glad they're citing third-party sources, that's transparency for you! 🙏 But it would be awesome if free users could access this feature too, like maybe as a premium feature or something? That way, everyone can enjoy it, not just the paid subscribers. 👍
