Snapchat blocks more than 400,000 Australian accounts but warns of 'significant gaps' in under-16s social media ban

Snapchat's Under-16 Social Media Ban Leaves Significant Gaps, Officials Warn. The social media giant has disabled over 415,000 Australian Snapchat accounts belonging to users under 16 as part of its compliance with a law requiring platforms to ban minors from accessing their services.

The move was made in January, following the implementation of the law in December last year, which aims to restrict access to social media for individuals under 16. The government had announced that 4.7 million accounts across 10 platforms had been disabled or removed in the first few days of the ban, a figure that suggests significant progress towards enforcing the new regulations.

However, concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of Snapchat's facial age estimation technology, which was used to identify and disable young users' accounts. Reports have suggested that the technology can be easily bypassed by teenagers, who may be able to create fake profiles or use alternative apps to communicate with their peers.

Snapchat has acknowledged these limitations, stating that there are "significant gaps" in its implementation of the ban, which could leave some young people vulnerable to exploitation while others over 16 may incorrectly lose access. The company also warned that some users may turn to less regulated messaging apps to evade the restrictions.

The eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, has acknowledged these concerns and stated that her team will be sending notices to companies on how they are complying with the ban. However, she noted that addressing systemic issues and improving age assurance technology is crucial to ensuring the law achieves its intended outcomes.

While Meta and Snapchat have called for app store-level age verification, other platforms have not disclosed their own account deactivation numbers, leading to concerns about the effectiveness of the enforcement process. The eSafety commissioner has declined to provide a breakdown of the data, citing the focus on the initial 10 platforms that were required to comply with the ban.

The ongoing debate highlights the challenges of regulating social media and protecting young users from exploitation online. As policymakers continue to evaluate the success of the law, concerns about Snapchat's facial age estimation technology and the effectiveness of its implementation will remain a pressing issue.

omg what's up snapchat needs to step up their game if they cant even protect minors on their platform i mean 415k accounts are just a drop in the ocean but still its better than nothing tho idk about these fake profiles ppl can get creative 😂👀 like who has time to create a new profile every time snapchat changes its mind anyway gotta give props to australia for taking action tho 💪

I'm so frustrated with this whole thing 🤯. I mean, it's one thing for our government to try to protect us from all the weird stuff on the internet, but when they don't even get the basics right 🙄. Like, how hard is it to implement a simple age verification system? It sounds like Snapchat knew about these gaps and just kinda... went with it 😒. And now we're left wondering who's gonna be safe online and who's not. I'm all for protecting our kids from exploitation, but can't we do better than this? 🤦‍♀️

😕 i feel so bad for those 415k Aussie teens who got their snapchat accounts disabled 🤕 they're just trying to hang out with their friends online & now they can't 😔 it's like, shouldn't tech companies be able to help gov't make things safer instead of just kinda... following the rules? 💁‍♀️ i mean, we all know that fake profiles are easy to make 🤫 and some apps aren't even regulated 🚫 so what's going on here? 🤔 i wish they'd come up with better solutions than just disabling accounts & sending notices 🔒 it's like, the gov't is trying but the tech companies need to do more 👎

OMG u gotta wonder wut Snapchat was thinkin when dey implemented dat facial age estimation tech lol its like they didnt even consider it cud be hackable 🤦‍♂️ like teens r smart enuf 2 find ways around it or create fake profiles 2 get past it. and now some 16+ users r losin access 2 their accounts cuz of it? that's wild. i feel 4 them. eSafety commissioner Julie Inman Grant should totes be all like "hey Snapchat, u need 2 step ur game up" 👊

im not sure if snapchat did the right thing disabling all those accounts but on the other hand i think its awesome that they're taking steps to keep minors safe online 🤔💻. it just makes me wonder how they're going to catch the ones who know how to outsmart their age verification system 😂. anyway, i hope they can work on improving their tech so no 16 year olds are messed up in the process 👍
