Shabana Mahmood plans to remove more families from UK in asylum shake-up

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has expressed frustration with the government's approach to deporting families of failed asylum seekers, claiming that it lacks necessary toughness. In a policy document outlining plans for significant reforms to asylum laws, Mahmood acknowledged that many families continue to live in the UK without making progress on their claims, receiving free accommodation and financial support.

This move is expected to exacerbate tensions with refugee organizations and Labour MPs, who are warning of potential rebellion against Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government. The document states that the government will now provide financial support to allow families to return to their home countries, and if they refuse this support, enforcement action will be taken.

Enforcement plans include escalating removal efforts for families with children under 18 whose asylum claims have been rejected. Mahmood stated that the government would consult on measures allowing the removal of financial support from such families. The move aims to create a more hard-headed approach, including commencing measures from the 2016 Immigration Act that would allow for support removal.

As part of these reforms, the government plans to introduce incentive payments of thousands of pounds for asylum seekers who voluntarily leave the UK if their claims are rejected. This trial will encourage claimants to depart the country without resorting to enforced removal. The policy aims to find a balance between financial packages and enforcement action, with Mahmood emphasizing that this approach is cost-effective for taxpayers.

The Home Secretary's proposals are likely to spark controversy among those advocating for refugee rights and Labour MPs who oppose the government's stance on asylum seekers.

so they're gonna make it harder on families of failed asylum seekers now ๐Ÿค”... like, what about the kids? shouldn't we be looking out for them too? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ i mean, free accommodation and financial support is already in place, so why bother with enforcement action? ๐Ÿšซ it's all just gonna cause more stress and heartache, imo...

this is just a slap in the face to these families who are literally trying to escape their own countries lol ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ i mean, thousands of pounds to leave the uk? that's not exactly 'incentive'... more like 'get out while you still can' ๐Ÿค‘ and what about all the families with kids under 18? doesn't the govt care about them at all? ๐Ÿ™„ it just feels like they're trying to make asylum seekers feel guilty for seeking help ๐Ÿ‘Ž

OMG ๐Ÿ’ฅ I'm literally SHOOK by this news!!! They're actually gonna cut off financial support from families of failed asylum seekers if they refuse to leave the country?!? That's, like, so not fair! ๐Ÿ˜ก What about all these poor families who are already struggling to make ends meet while their cases are being processed? It's gotta be hard enough for them without losing access to basic resources. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ And what about the kids? ๐Ÿค” I mean, don't they deserve a safe and stable place to grow up?!? This whole policy change is just so... so... problematic ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿค” gotta wonder how much it costs to keep these families in the UK vs just giving 'em a way out... thousands of pounds incentive sounds like a decent start, but still feels kinda tokenistic ๐Ÿค‘. also what's the real end goal here? is it just about ticking boxes or actually helping ppl who need help? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค” So I think Shabana Mahmood is trying to fix a system that's been broken, but maybe going about it in the wrong way? Like, her approach is all about being tough, but what about showing some empathy for families who are just trying to make a new life here? ๐ŸŒŽ It feels like they're caught between getting support and not getting support.

And can we talk about how this is gonna affect the UK's reputation internationally? I mean, Labour MPs and refugee orgs are already up in arms. Not sure if making things 'tougher' will actually help with the asylum process... maybe we need a more nuanced approach? ๐Ÿค

omg ๐Ÿ˜ฉ i'm so worried about these fams ๐Ÿค• they're already strugglin to make ends meet & now u want 2 deport 'em ๐Ÿšซ that's harsh 2 say the least ๐Ÿ’” but at the same time, i get whr shabana mahmood is comin from ๐Ÿค” her gov needs 2 show some backbone ๐Ÿ‘Š n all, i wish they cud find a better way 2 help these ppl ๐ŸŒŽ it's all about findin that balance ๐Ÿ˜Š

just saw this thread and gotta say, i think it's a bit harsh on the families. de facto means they're still gettin' free accommodation & support without makin' progress on their claims... sounds like they're just waitin' for some reprieve ๐Ÿค”. plus, what about the kids? take away financial support if families with young ones are gonna be left in a precarious spot. can't imagine how stressin' that must be 4 them. seems like the gov's tryin' to strike a balance but might end up pushin' ppl into a corner...

omg this is gonna be a wild ride lol๐Ÿคฏ they're trying to fix the whole UK asylum situation but i'm worried it's gonna backfire on them ๐Ÿค” like, what if families with kids just get scared and don't wanna leave cuz of the enforcement plans? ๐Ÿšซ that's not gonna solve anything. and the incentive payments might be nice, but is it really enough to make ppl wanna voluntarily leave the country just because their claim got rejected? ๐Ÿ’ธ i think the government needs to think this through better, we can't just sweep problems under the rug... or in this case, deport families ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’”

the system is broken ๐Ÿค”... families living in limbo for years, struggling to make ends meet while waiting for a decision that may never come. thousands of pounds to leave voluntarily? it's not about choice, it's about desperation ๐Ÿ’ธ... enforcement action against families with kids under 18? how can we claim to be a compassionate society when we're treating vulnerable people like this? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I don't get why they gotta make things so complicated. They're just gonna force families out, but what about the kids? I mean, Mahmood says enforcement action is necessary, but has she thought about how that'll play out in real life? Those families are already scared and vulnerable โ€“ do we really wanna add more stress to their lives?

And the incentive payments thingy sounds like a band-aid solution. What's to stop people from just leaving because they're promised some cash? It's not like it's gonna make a difference if they don't get support in their own countries either... I just don't see how this plan is gonna help anyone, especially the families who are already struggling. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm low-key worried about how this is gonna play out ๐Ÿค”... The data says 75% of families who get rejected will just disappear without a trace, leaving their kids behind ๐Ÿšซ. Removing financial support from families with minors under 18 can lead to 50% more children being left in care ๐Ÿ“Š. On the other hand, incentivizing voluntary departures could save taxpayers ยฃ10 million a year ๐Ÿ’ธ (that's based on a study showing 25% of rejected claimants would leave if offered enough cash). What I don't get is why they're not just offering unconditional support to all families and sorting out the backlog ๐Ÿ•’. The stats say 40% of asylum seekers are left in limbo for over 2 years ๐Ÿšฎ...
