Samsung's latest offering, the Galaxy Z TriFold, is a smartphone that folds up to become a 10-inch tablet. The phone's design is similar to other folding phones on the market but with one major innovation - it can fold into three panels.
The first panel is like a normal smartphone screen, with thicker-than-usual bezels and a weight of almost 300 grams. When flipped open, the inner layer flips out to reveal an even larger 10-inch display that feels more like an Android tablet than any other Samsung folding phone before it.
This bigger screen gives users three app options at once: running one big app across the whole screen, or two apps side-by-side and a third on the remaining panel. The design of the phone is such that only the outer panel has to be held in hand, making it easier to use than other folding phones with similar display sizes.
The hardware behind the TriFold is excellent, with specs comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, including a 200-megapixel main camera and IP48 dust- and water-resistance. The price of the phone is around $2,500 in the US, but it's still considered too expensive for many users.
While it may be exciting technology, the TriFold is also quite pricey and feels frivolous at a time when economic conditions are tough. Only a handful of people will likely be able to take advantage of its unique capabilities, which come with a hefty price tag.
