Russia's War on Ukraine Enters Day 1,345: Fighting Intensifies with Drone Strikes and Missile Barrages
In a day marred by relentless bombardment, Russian forces continued their relentless assault on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. The Ministry of Defence announced the capture of two villages in the Zaporizhia and Kharkiv regions, but the real impact of this victory was felt elsewhere.
A devastating drone strike in a village south of Ukraine's southeastern industrial city, Zaporizhzhia, claimed the life of one person, while regional officials confirmed that Russian attacks on dwellings in Kramatorsk killed another person and injured three. The city of Sumy also bore the brunt of an attack by 10 Russian drones, leaving two people injured when their apartment buildings were hit.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia's goal is to plunge Ukraine into darkness as the cold winter months approach. "Its goal is to plunge Ukraine into darkness," he said in his nightly video address. "Ours is to preserve the light."
As the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate, international concerns are growing. Poland intercepted a Russian reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea for the second time this week, while also refusing to reopen border crossings with Belarus until mid-November.
In a separate development, a German court sentenced a man of Russian ethnic background to six years in prison for spying and planning arson attacks on military installations and railways in Germany. However, two accomplices received suspended sentences of 12 and six months.
The ongoing conflict also saw a shift in rhetoric from US President Donald Trump, who stated that the United States would resume nuclear weapons testing to levels comparable to its rivals. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov downplayed this threat, stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin warned any country that tested a nuclear weapon, Russia would do the same.
As negotiations between Ukraine and Russia continue, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is set to meet with Trump on November 7 in Washington, where he aims to discuss a path to a US-Russia meeting in his country and seek exemption from US energy sanctions.
