Review: mgk runs through his many musical personas in wide-ranging show, brings out surprise guest Halsey

Machine Gun Kelly's concert at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, was a bewilderingly wide-ranging show that left the crowd wondering which persona to take him for. The rapper (born Colson Baker) seamlessly transitioned through his many musical personas, including hip-hop, country, and pop-punk.

The setlist began with "Outlaw Overture" followed by a medley of hits from his latest album "Lost Americana," such as the moody "Vampire Diaries." He also included tracks like "Ay!", "Goddamn", and "I Think I'm Okay," showcasing his versatility as an artist.

However, the real showstopper was when Halsey joined Kelly on stage for a live version of their duet "Forget Me Not" from his earlier pop-punk album "Tickets to My Downfall." The crowd went wild as she stuck around to perform another song with Kelly, "Bad Things," which originally featured Camila Cabello.

Kelly also made time to pay tribute to Halsey, dedicating a heartfelt performance of his new track "Who I Was" to her. He expressed admiration for her strength in the face of health struggles and praised her impact on music.

Throughout the concert, Kelly's stage presence was undeniable, with elaborate props and special effects that added to the overall spectacle. At one point, he emerged from a giant Statue of Liberty, complete with pierced nose and arm holding a cigarette.

The show also featured a poignant ballad performance of "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls, accompanied by Julia Wolf on vocals. The setlist concluded with Kelly's emotional rendition of "Play This When I'm Gone," dedicated to his daughters, and the darkly introspective "Papercuts."

In short, Machine Gun Kelly's concert was a wild ride through multiple musical personas, showcasing his impressive range as an artist. With Halsey's surprise appearance and heartfelt tributes, it was clear that this show was about so much more than just music – it was an immersive experience that left the audience in awe.
