R.E.M.'s Mike Mills takes aim at Ariana Grande's fragrances, his band's nameakes, and even sleep cycles with 'My Cologne'.
Mike Mills, bassist of iconic alt-rock group R.E.M., has let loose a cheeky new single titled "My Cologne" - the first release from his recently-formed supergroup Howl Owl Howl. Alongside Darius Rucker (Hootie & the Blowfish) and Steve Gorman (The Black Crowes), Mills pokes fun at pop sensation Ariana Grande's beauty empire, including her eponymous fragrance line, which shares a name with his own band.
In an Instagram video promoting the single, Mills admits that he was initially charmed by Grande's line of fragrances but quickly crossed the line when he spotted a cassette container emblazoned with R.E.M. on one of her products. "I said, OK, that's going over the line," he jokes.
The tongue-in-cheek track, however, is all in good fun - Mills assures fans that it wasn't meant to be malicious. "It was just funny," he explains. The chorus line, 'I want to smell like Ariana Grande, and I think she wants you to smell like me,' captures the playful spirit of the song.
Howl Owl Howl's debut single marks a significant milestone for the band, which has been in the making for 30 years. According to their streaming bio, "the band was born from friendship and pure joy of collaboration." With a fluid, roots-rock sound infused with an open-minded afternative flair, the supergroup is poised to shake up the music scene.
The band's album, reportedly not yet focused on any other pop star fragrance brands (though one can't help but wonder), is expected to drop soon. And in November, Howl Owl Howl will embark on a tour that promises to get audiences rocking out to their unique sound.
