Wildlife Photographer Captures Dramatic Footage of Seal Escaping Orca Hunt on Boat.
A harrowing encounter between a pod of orcas and a harbor seal took place in the waters off Seattle, where a wildlife photographer captured stunning footage of the event. Charvet Drucker, who was on a whale-watching trip, spotted a group of at least eight killer whales, also known as orcas, which were hunting a fleeing harbor seal.
As the orcas closed in, Drucker's camera captured the intense moment when the seal leaped into the air to evade its predators. However, instead of succumbing to the hunt, the seal managed to scramble onto the stern of Drucker's 20-foot boat, where it clung for dear life.
In a remarkable display of survival instincts, the seal refused to give up and continued to cling to the boat as the orcas attempted to dislodge it. The orcas employed the "wave-washing" technique, creating waves to try and shake the seal off, but ultimately failed in their pursuit.
After about 15 minutes, the orcas gave up and swam away, leaving Drucker's group to breathe a sigh of relief. With the seal still on board, they turned on the boat's engine and slowly made their way closer to shore, where they could safely transport the exhausted creature.
Drucker has previously photographed dead seals in the mouths of orcas and has stated that she is "Team Orca" when it comes to wildlife hunting. However, this encounter showed her a different side of orcas as predators, which left her questioning her stance.
