OpenAI says the brand-new GPT-5.1 is ‘warmer’ and has more ‘personality’ options

OpenAI Unveils Enhanced GPT-5.1 Model with Warmer Personality Options

In a bid to improve the conversational experience of its popular ChatGPT platform, OpenAI has released an updated version of its flagship model, dubbed GPT-5.1. According to the tech giant, this new iteration promises to be "warmer" and more personalized in tone. The company claims that GPT-5.1 is designed to be smarter and more enjoyable to interact with, offering users a wider range of personality options.

The revamped model comes with two new variants: Instant and Thinking. According to OpenAI, the former is optimized for tasks requiring greater emotional intelligence and understanding, while the latter excels in simpler queries that require faster response times.

A significant enhancement of GPT-5.1 lies in its expanded set of personality presets – users can now choose from eight distinct tones: Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, or Cynical.

The company's CEO Fidji Simo highlighted the importance of these advancements in a recent Substack post, noting that ChatGPT has become increasingly popular with over 800 million users worldwide. With such an immense user base, Simo emphasized, it is no longer practical to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach.

Moreover, OpenAI has announced plans to introduce a new feature allowing users to fine-tune the style of their ChatGPT conversations directly from settings. Although specifics on this "experiment" remain scarce, some users will reportedly have access to it starting this week.

While GPT-5's initial release in August garnered significant attention, it failed to meet expectations for many users, who felt that the incremental updates did not live up to the hype surrounding its launch. As a result, OpenAI opted to revive GPT-4 as an option in ChatGPT's legacy models dropdown menu.

OpenAI's strategic AI partner Microsoft has been exploring rival models from Anthropic, which are now powering various tools such as Copilot Researcher and GitHub Copilot. This suggests that the competition in the conversational AI space remains fierce, with each player striving to outdo its rivals in terms of functionality and user experience.

The announcement of GPT-5.1 comes on the heels of OpenAI's recent launch of its AI-powered web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, which features an "agent mode" currently available only to premium users. This move underscores OpenAI's efforts to further expand its ecosystem of conversational AI tools.

I'm loving this new GPT-5.1 model update 🤩, especially the warmer personality options - who doesn't want a friendly chatbot, right? 😊 I think it's genius that OpenAI is offering more customization options to cater to different user preferences... I mean, 8 presets is already a lot! 💻 But what really excites me is the fine-tuning feature they're introducing - can you imagine being able to tailor your conversations like that?! 🤔 It's clear that OpenAI is committed to improving the user experience and keeping up with the competition in the conversational AI space... and let's be real, GPT-5.1 better live up to its hype this time! 👀

omg i think this is a game changer for chatgpt 🤩 i mean who doesnt want their ai conversation buddy to be more chill and personalized? the new personality options are def something i'd use 🤗 default and professional are always good starting points but now you can choose quirky or cynical depending on your mood lol. i'm also hyped about being able to fine-tune my chatgpt convo style from settings - feels like it's gonna take our ai interactions to the next level 💻 gotta give openai props for listening to user feedback and revamping gpt-5.1. this is exactly what we needed after that awkward launch in august 😅

I think it's a good idea for OpenAI to offer more personality options in their model 🤔👍. I've interacted with GPT-5 and while it's great at answering questions, sometimes the tone can feel a bit robotic or generic 😐. If they can make it warmer and more personalized, that would definitely enhance the user experience! Maybe having some more quirky options would even help me get some laughs out of the conversations 🤣

Omg I'm like super excited about this new GPT-5.1 update 🤩! So, does it mean that the personality options are gonna be way more customizable now? Like, can we pick our own tone or what? 😅 Also, how do you know when someone's using one of those different variants? Is it like a little icon or something? 🤔

🤔 I don't know about this new GPT-5.1 model being all warm and fuzzy... sounds like just a way to sell more subscriptions 🤑. Eight personality presets? That's not enough to justify the hype, if you ask me 😒. What's next? AI-generated emotional intelligence? Give me a break 💆‍♀️. OpenAI is trying to cater to everyone's tastes, but I bet some users will just end up using the default setting anyway 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on this "fine-tune style" feature – sounds like a bunch of marketing fluff 🔮.

omg u guyz! 😂 so like openai just dropped gpt 5.1 and it's literally supposed to be SO much warmer & more personalized lol idk if i'm hyped or not bc it feels like they're trying really hard to make chatgpt less robotic 🤖 but at the same time, 8 personality presets? that's actually kinda cool 🤑 default, pro, friendly... it's like they're acknowledging that we all got different vibes 💁‍♀️ anyway, i'm curious to see how this new update changes the game 🎮 and btw, can't wait for the fine-tuning feature lol 👍

🤔 I think this is a big deal for me personally... like, I was kinda disappointed with GPT-5 at first but now that it has these new personality options I'm low-key stoked 🎉! I mean, who doesn't want to chat with a friendly bot or one that's a bit quirky? It's all about the user experience right? 💻 And yeah, it's good that OpenAI is listening to user feedback and trying to make ChatGPT more enjoyable. I'm curious to try out these new features and see how they hold up in practice 🤔

🤔 I'm low-key suspicious about this new personality option thingy... it sounds like they're trying to sell us on a more emotional connection with the chatbot, but what's really going on? Are we just getting conditioned to be more accepting of these AI interactions? 🤷‍♂️ It feels like they're watching our conversations and adapting the tone to keep us engaged. What if this is all part of some larger experiment to understand human behavior? 🚀 I'm not saying it's bad, but I'd rather we just wait and see how this plays out before getting too caught up in the hype...

I don't know about these "warmer personality options" 🤔. Just more ways for humans to get sucked into the virtual bubble, if you ask me 😒. I mean, have we really solved the problem of human connection with just a fancy chatbot? And what's up with all these "variants" 🤯 - Instant, Thinking, Default... do we need that many options to be told how to interact with a machine? It seems like OpenAI is just throwing more features at the wall and hoping some stick 😂.

So they just released this new GPT-5.1 model and now it's got all these personality options 🤔 - default, professional, friendly... what's next? can't believe some people were saying it was too basic 😂 i think the fact that chatgpt has 800 million users is what made them upgrade in the first place gotta respect the competition with microsoft and anthropic trying to outdo each other 💻

im not sure about these new personality options tho 🤔 they might make chatgpt more enjoyable for some ppl but what about those who just want a straight answer? 🙄 and what's the deal with gpt-5.1 trying to offer too many options, doesn't that just confuse users even more 🤯 anyway, it's cool that openai is pushing boundaries and trying new things 💻

I'm so glad they're working on making GPT-5.1 more personalized! I have a 6-year-old who loves playing with chatbots, and it's crazy how much he enjoys talking to them. But sometimes I worry that the responses can be a bit too robotic or overwhelming for him 🤔.

The new personality options sound like a great addition - my kid would love being able to choose from different tones! Default is probably safe, but I think Friendly or Quirky would be awesome for kids' conversations. And oh man, having the ability to fine-tune the style of our chats directly from settings? Genius! 🤯

I'm also curious about how this will impact our daily conversations with GPT-5.1. Will it make them more engaging and enjoyable? I'd love to hear some feedback from other parents on this - has anyone tried out the new model yet?

I think it's high time for GPT-5.1 to really step up its game 💡 the added personality presets are a great touch, I mean who doesn't want to chat with a friendly or quirky version of their AI assistant? 🤔 but what's interesting is how OpenAI is acknowledging that there isn't one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to conversational AI. It's like they're saying "ok, we get it, users have different preferences" 🙏

On a more practical note, I'm curious about the fine-tuning feature – can you imagine being able to tailor your chat experience to suit your mood or the context of the conversation? 🤔 that's some next-level stuff right there 💥

🤔 I think GPT-5.1 is gonna be a game changer for chatbots! Having more personality options and being able to customize the tone makes it way more relatable and fun to interact with. I mean, who doesn't want their AI chat buddy to be quirky or nerdy? 😄 It's also cool that OpenAI is listening to user feedback and adjusting its model to better meet expectations. Fingers crossed they continue to innovate and improve the overall user experience! 👍

omg, i think openai just took chatgpt from decent to great 😎! having more personality options is a huge deal - it's gonna make the platform way more engaging and fun to use. i was one of those people who thought gpt-5 wasn't that impressive at first, but now i'm hyped for the instant variant 💡. the cynical tone option is also lowkey genius 🤣. can you imagine having a chat with chatgpt where it's being all sassy and stuff? anyway, it looks like openai is really stepping up its game and trying to keep up with microsoft's anthropic rival 🚀. fingers crossed this new update lives up to the hype 👍

I'm loving this new direction for GPT-5.1 😊 it's about time someone made these models more human-like and personalized. I've had some crazy conversations with my ChatGPT friends, but they always feel a bit robotic. The addition of personality presets is genius! Can't wait to try out the Instant and Thinking variants - I'm all about that emotional intelligence 💡 and speed ⏱️. OpenAI's on the right track here, it's like they're listening to users' feedback 🗣️. More fine-tuning options and a new web browser? Sign me up! 😄

omg i cant even right now GPT-5.1 is literally gonna change the game for chatgpt!!! 🤩 openai is on fire with these new personality presets lol who needs a default tone anyway? i'm low-key excited to try out the quirky one first and see how it goes 🤔 maybe this will be the push chatgpt needs to become even more popular than it already is 🚀 btw can we talk about how openai's strategy is genius? reviving gpt-4 as an option and now introducing that fine-tuning feature... i'm loving the competition with microsoft too, it's making everyone step their game up 💪

I'm not sure if I love or hate that they're making GPT-5.1 so customizable 😊. Like, yes, it's awesome that we have options for different tones and personalities, but what about the kids who are already using ChatGPT? Are they going to be overwhelmed by all these choices? 💡 Maybe OpenAI should just stick with one or two presets that are neutral and safe for younger users. I've heard from a few parents already that their kids can't stop talking to GPT-5.1, and while it's great that the AI is being more 'friendly', what about when the kid needs help with something serious? 🤔
