NYC seeks volunteers for overnight count as Mamdani begins to tackle homelessness

New York City is set to conduct its annual homeless count, with volunteers needed to help track down those living on the streets. The effort is crucial, as it provides the city with vital data to allocate resources and services effectively towards homeless individuals who don't reside in shelters.

As Mayor Zohran Mamdani takes office, his administration promises to bolster the city's outreach efforts aimed at tackling homelessness. This year's count, known as the Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE), comes against a backdrop where many of the nation's major cities are struggling with an increasing homeless population. According to federal data, Los Angeles boasts 70% of its homeless residents living on the streets, a stark contrast to New York City, which sees just about 3%.

The city's unique right-to-shelter policy ensures that anyone who asks for assistance gets a bed, a factor contributing to the disparity. In response, New York City has been expanding its Safe Haven and stabilization beds with more relaxed rules than traditional shelters. Last year, the agency successfully connected over 1,000 former homeless individuals to permanent homes.

Commissioner Molly Wasow Park emphasized the need for vigilance in the face of federal actions that threaten to erode the city's social safety net. "At a time when we're facing an onslaught of federal actions...we must all stand steadfast in our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable amongst us."

Volunteers can sign up to participate in the count, which will take place from January 27th at 10 p.m. until 4 a.m., spanning across the five boroughs. During this time, volunteers will be tasked with identifying homeless individuals on the subway, streets, and parks.

The data collected from this year's HOPE count is crucial in guiding the city's response to homelessness, and Mayor Mamdani has encouraged all New Yorkers to join forces in building a better city.

I'm so down for volunteering for the HOPE count, it's like, we gotta know who's out here struggling 🀝. I mean, 70% of LA's homeless population living on the streets is just wild, it's like, what happened to all that progress? We need to make sure everyone's got a safe spot to lay their head at night, you feel me?

I'm also loving the fact that NYC is expanding its Safe Haven and stabilization beds with more relaxed rules than traditional shelters 🌟. It's like, we gotta make it easier for people to get back on their feet, not just throw 'em a lifeline and then leave 'em dangling πŸ˜”.

And I love that Commissioner Park is all about standing up for the vulnerable – we need more of that kind of spirit in this city πŸ’ͺ. Alright, I'm signing up to volunteer! Who's with me? πŸŽ‰

I'm a bit skeptical about how effective the new outreach efforts will be under Mayor Mamdani πŸ€”. I mean, 70% of LA's homeless population living on the streets is crazy 🚨, but it sounds like NYC's approach is trying to address a different issue altogether. What if some people don't want to go into traditional shelters? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Have they considered other options like tiny home villages or community land trusts?

And what about the fact that NYC has been expanding its Safe Haven and stabilization beds with more relaxed rules? Is this just a way to make it easier for people to be "hidden" from view instead of actually addressing the root causes of homelessness? 🀐 I'm not trying to be negative, but as a volunteer, you gotta wonder if these efforts are gonna make a real difference. πŸ’‘

I'm so down for getting involved with the homeless count 🀝! I mean, it's crazy how some cities are struggling with homelessness on a massive scale. Like, 70% of LA's homeless residents living on the streets is just...whoa 😲. I'm glad NYC has that right-to-shelter policy in place, but at the same time, I get why they'd want to expand Safe Haven beds with more relaxed rules. It sounds like a win-win? πŸ€”

I love how Commissioner Park is emphasizing the need for vigilance and protecting our most vulnerable citizens πŸ™. We gotta look out for each other, you know? And 1,000 former homeless individuals connected to permanent homes last year is amazing πŸŽ‰! Let's keep pushing forward and build a better city for everyone! πŸ’š

man i think its so cool that new york city is doing something proactive about homelessness πŸ™πŸŒ† the fact that they're expanding safe haven beds with more relaxed rules is like totally genius πŸ€“ anyone who asks for help gets a bed, thats amazing! πŸ‘ and to know that last year they connected over 1k people to permanent homes is just wow πŸ’• its a good reminder that even small actions can make a big difference in someone's life 🌟

🌞 I'm actually kinda stoked that NYC is doing its homeless count again! It's like, we gotta know where our fellow human beings are, right? And it's awesome that the new mayor is making outreach efforts a priority - it shows he cares about those on the streets. Plus, who doesn't love a good community effort? 🌈 We should be celebrating the fact that NYC has more people in shelters than on the streets compared to other major cities! It's like we're leading the way with our right-to-shelter policy. And did you see that over 1k people were connected to permanent homes last year? That's some serious progress! πŸ’ͺ

omg i'm so down for volunteering 2 help out with homeless count πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ’–! its crazy 2 think about how many ppl r struggling w/o a roof over their heads n york city seems 2 be doing some amazing things 2 combat it like dat right 2 shelter policy is everything πŸ’• n i love dat commissioner wasow park is talkin out 4 the vulnerable we gotta stand up 4 each other 🀝🏼🌟

New York's got heart, still got love for homeless folks πŸ’–πŸŒ†

ugh its sad that ppl still living on the streets πŸ€• like whats going on in america?? NYC is literally the only place where homeless ppl can just walk into a shelter πŸ πŸ‘, thats so cool lol im not mad tho cuz its actually pretty cool to see cities tryin to help each other out when everyone else is just throwin money at it and expectin results πŸ’ΈπŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I think it's awesome that NYC is counting its homeless population again 🀝 but I'm not sure if it's really helping...I mean, isn't it just giving the government more data to use against us? πŸ€” What's the point of having all that info if they're just gonna keep on making things harder for people who are already struggling? πŸ˜•

On the other hand, I totally agree with Commissioner Wasow Park that we need to be vigilant about federal actions that threaten our social safety net πŸ’ͺ...I mean, who wants some out-of-touch politician coming in and messing with our rights? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Ugh, volunteering for this count sounds like a total drag 🚫 but at the same time, I guess it's kinda cool that we're all gonna be working together to try and make a difference πŸ’•...I just hope we don't end up getting stuck with more paperwork than actual help for people on the streets πŸ“.

I'm so down for helping out with this homeless count thing! 🀝 It's crazy that some cities are struggling so much with homelessness, but NYC is actually doing some cool stuff to tackle the problem 🌈. I love that they're expanding their Safe Haven and stabilization beds - it's awesome that they're making it easier for people to get help and find permanent homes 🏠. And OMG, 1,000 people found homes last year?! That's amazing! πŸ’– The mayor is on the right track with his outreach efforts too...fingers crossed he can make a real difference 🀞. Can't wait to sign up and be a part of it! πŸ’ͺ

awww man i feel so bad 4 those ppl livin on the streets πŸ€• it's crazy how some cities r strugglin with homelessness & new york city is doin its part by expandin their safe haven & stabilization beds πŸ’ͺ but at the same time, i know how easy it is to get caught up in bureaucracy & red tape πŸ™„ let's hope mayor mamdani & his team stay committed 2 helpin those in need ❀️

idk why ppl gotta be so harsh with homeless ppl. they just need help & support πŸ€—. it's sad that some cities are struggling w/ homelessness more than NYC. dont know what the deal is, but NYCs got a good system goin' on πŸ€”. and omg, 1k ppl connected to permanent homes last yr?! thats amazing πŸ’–. volunteers r gonna be super important in this count tho... hope they all come together & make a diff πŸ™.

I'm concerned about the growing disparity between cities like Los Angeles, where most homeless residents live on the streets, versus New York City, which takes a more compassionate approach with its right-to-shelter policy πŸ€”. While it's heartening to see efforts to connect 1,000 former homeless individuals to permanent homes last year, I worry that the influx of federal actions threatening the social safety net could have long-term consequences for vulnerable populations 😟.

Moreover, expanding Safe Haven and stabilization beds with more relaxed rules than traditional shelters is an innovative approach, but it's essential to ensure that these services are accessible to all who need them πŸ“ˆ. I'm also curious about how the HOPE count will be adapted to account for the changing demographics of homelessness in New York City, particularly among marginalized groups such as LGBTQ+ individuals and families with children πŸ‘ͺ.

As Mayor Mamdani encourages all New Yorkers to join forces in building a better city, I hope that this year's HOPE count will provide actionable data to inform targeted interventions and address the root causes of homelessness πŸ“Š.

I'm tellin' ya, it's crazy how much things have changed, but some stuff stays the same 🀯. I mean, who'd've thought that people would still be livin' on the streets in this day and age? It's like, what happened to all the progress we were supposed to make back in the 90s and early 2000s? πŸ™„

But you know, it's heartwarming to see people comin' together to help out those in need. I mean, sign up for a volunteer spot to count homeless folks on the subway at night? That's some dedication right there πŸ’―! And I love how Mayor Mamdani is all about expandin' the Safe Haven program – it's like, we gotta take care of each other, ya know?

And can we talk about LA for a second? 70% of their homeless folks livin' on the streets? That's wild 🀯. It's like, we've got some learnin' to do as a nation, 'cause it sounds like they're way behind us in terms of dealin' with homelessness.

Anyway, I'm all for gettin' out there and countin' those homeless folks – it's one more step towards makin' our city a better place. Let's keep it up! πŸ’ͺ

IT'S SO GREAT TO SEE NEW YORK CITY TAKING ACTION AGAINST HOMELESSNESS!!! 🌟 THEY'RE HIRING VOLUNTEERS FOR THE HOMELESS OUTREACH POPULATION ESTIMATE COUNT AND IT'S SUCH A GOOD IDEA!!! πŸ’‘ THE DATA FROM THIS COUNT WILL REALLY HELP THEM ALLOCATE RESOURCES AND SERVICES EFFECTIVELY TO THOSE IN NEED. I THINK IT'S AMAZING THAT NEW YORK CITY HAS THIS RIGHT-TO-SHELTER POLICY, IT'S LIKE THEY'RE SAYING "WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK"!!! 🀝 IT WOULD BE AWESOME IF OTHER CITIES COULD LEARN FROM THEIR APPROACH AND EXPAND ON THE CONCEPT OF SAFE HAVEN AND STABILIZATION BEDS. ANYWAY, I'M EXCITED TO SEE HOW THIS COUNT GOES AND HOW MAYOR MAMDANI PLANS TO BUILD ON THE PROGRESS MADE LAST YEAR!

Ugh, 70% of people living on the streets in LA? 🀯 That's crazy! And in NYC, we're only at like 3%? It's all about the right-to-shelter policy here, but I'm not sure if it's just a Band-Aid solution. I mean, what's really being done to address the root causes of homelessness? More beds and services might be helpful, but what about affordable housing and job training programs?

And can we talk about how this count is happening during the night on public transportation? πŸš‚ It's just so... invasive. Don't people deserve some dignity? But I guess that's the thing with homelessness - it's a huge problem and there needs to be a huge effort to tackle it.

I'm all for Mayor Mamdani wanting to connect 1,000 more people to permanent homes last year, but what about those who are still struggling? What's going on behind the scenes? We need to know we're making progress before we can just keep counting and hoping for the best. πŸ€”
