Netflix and Paramount deals are both wrong for Warner Bros Discovery – and democracy | Courtney C Radsch

Warner Bros Discovery Deal: A Threat to Free Speech, Democracy and Market Competitiveness.

The recent deals between Netflix and Paramount Skydance to acquire Warner Bros Discovery pose a grave threat to free speech, democracy, and market competitiveness. Both options have been criticized for concentrating too much power in the hands of large corporations, potentially stifling independent journalism and limiting access to diverse perspectives.

On one hand, Netflix's $82.7 billion bid has sparked concerns about its own history of bowing to political pressure, as evident in the removal of a satirical news show critical of Saudi Arabia. While the proposed deal would exclude CNN from the acquisition, it remains uncertain whether this change would significantly alter Netflix's approach to content production and distribution.

Moreover, Netflix operates fundamentally differently from traditional studios, producing content solely for itself and controlling its vast library through opaque algorithms. Under a Warner Bros Discovery deal, Netflix would gain control over HBO's prestige programming and Warner Bros' film library, further concentrating market power in its hands.

On the other hand, Paramount Skydance's $108 billion hostile takeover bid has raised concerns about the Ellison family's influence over two of America's most influential news organizations: CBS News and CNN. This concentration of power could lead to a loss of editorial independence and potentially undermine democratic processes.

The Trump administration's efforts to extract editorial concessions from media companies desperate for regulatory approval have already led to alarming instances, such as the installation of a "bias" monitor at CBS News and the settlement of a meritless lawsuit against CBS. These actions threaten the very fabric of free speech and press freedom in the United States.

The proposed deals also underscore the need for stronger antitrust regulations and increased oversight by the FCC and Department of Justice to protect market competitiveness and prevent consolidation from stifling innovation and diverse perspectives.

Ultimately, both options pose significant risks to democracy and free speech. The government must act now to reject these deals and establish clear guidelines for media mergers that prioritize public interest over corporate interests.

omg i cant even think about what's gonna happen if they get acquired by netflix 🤯 i mean like dont we have the right to watch whatever shows we want on netflix without them censoring it? and whats up with this whole "market competitiveness" thing? doesnt that just sound like a fancy way of saying big corps getting bigger and small ones getting smaller? 🤑 ugh, idk, im all confused about what's happening here... btw, has anyone seen the latest season of their fave show on netflix? 😂

💔 this deal is a recipe for disaster - think of all the content we'll lose when these big corps get their hands on more power 💰 and news outlets start bowing down to corporate pressure 🤦‍♂️. government needs to step in ASAP and create some real protections for free speech and journalism 📰👮

man this is super worrying 🤯, like what's gonna happen to all the independent channels and shows? can't we just have a few players competing instead of it being all about who's got the most $$$ 💸? Netflix and Paramount Skydance are basically saying they're above the law, that they can do whatever they want and get away with it 🤥. and what's up with the FCC and DOJ not doing anything to stop this? shouldn't we be protecting our free speech and press freedom instead of just letting corporations run wild 💪?

omg can you believe the power of big corporations? they're like the cool kids in school who always want to own the homework 🤣 and control what's on the schedule. like, can't we just have some variety for once? Netflix wants HBO and Warner Bros' movies, but what about the rest of us? should we just be happy with our own corner of the library?

and don't even get me started on Paramount Skydance's bid – $108 billion is like, whoa 🤑. I'm pretty sure Elon Musk could buy that many Teslas with that kinda cash... and still have change for a Mars colonization fund 🚀.

seriously though, tho, these deals are scary. if they get through, it'll be like one big happy family – or should i say, one big corporate oligopoly 👪?

I dont think this is a good time for big corp taking over other companies... 🤔 they already have way too much power now. If this happens, it's gonna be hard for smaller indie productions to get on the air or get noticed. and what about all the good stuff that gets lost in the shuffle? like shows that dont fit into a specific genre or audience that want something different? we need more diversity of voices not less 📺

I'm also worried about what this means for our access to info... if one company owns everything, who decides whats news and whats not? 💻 I think thats why we have regulations in place to prevent this kinda thing from happening. we can't just let big corps run amok and stifle free speech 🗣️
