Minns admits mining and power projects can be fast-tracked under contentious NSW approval laws

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has revealed that changes to the state's planning laws, designed to speed up housing approvals, will also apply to mining and power projects. The move is set to enable new mines and wind and solar farms to be fast-tracked for development.

Critics have long argued that the sweeping reforms would prioritize business interests over environmental concerns, and Minns' admission has only intensified these criticisms. Environmental groups and the Greens have voiced their opposition to the changes, which many see as a recipe for unchecked industrialization.

The planning minister, Paul Scully, had initially avoided discussing mining in his second reading speech, focusing instead on the benefits of accelerated housing approvals. However, Minns has been more explicit about the potential applications of the reforms, claiming that they will facilitate investment in major projects across NSW.

Minns' comments have sparked fierce debate, with Greens MP Sue Higginson accusing him and Scully of misleading parliament and the community about the true intentions behind the changes. She claims that the government has been attempting to push through a "wild west" approach to development, which would ignore environmental safeguards and prioritise business interests above all else.

Despite this backlash, Minns remains committed to the reforms, insisting that they will make NSW an attractive destination for investors and drive economic growth. He has established an Investment Delivery Authority, modelled on the Housing Delivery Authority, to streamline the state's approvals process and provide certainty for developers.

However, Higginson and other critics remain unconvinced, arguing that the changes will only serve to further entrench the power of big business at the expense of environmental protection and community participation. As the debate continues, one thing is clear: the future of NSW's development landscape hangs in the balance.

I'm really worried about this new planning law 😟. I mean, who doesn't love a good economic boost, but at what cost? πŸ€” We're talking about our environment and communities here, not just some big business profits. It feels like we're trading one problem for another – all these new mines and solar farms might bring in cash, but what about the impact on local wildlife and water sources? πŸŒ³πŸ’§

I'm also super frustrated that politicians are being so dismissive of concerns from environmental groups and communities. Don't they understand that this is our home we're talking about, not just some development opportunity? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's like they think business interests should be the only thing on the table. That's just not right in my book πŸ˜’.

I'm all for economic growth, but it needs to be done in a way that balances progress with responsibility. We can't just keep pushing forward without thinking about the long-term effects of our actions. 🌞 It's time for some real discussion and consideration here, not just quick fixes and empty promises πŸ’¬.

OMG, this is wild! 🀯 I'm literally living for the new mining projects that are about to get fast-tracked πŸš€πŸ’₯ but at the same time, I'm low-key scared for our environment 🌎😩 like, what if we're sacrificing too much for the sake of economic growth? πŸ’Έ It's a tough one, you feel? πŸ€” I'm all for investing in major projects and making NSW an attractive destination, but can't we find a balance between business and the planet? πŸŒŸπŸ’–

omg u guys can u believe this?? 🀯 Chris Minns is literally trying to turn new south wales into a "wild west" and it's soooo not cool πŸ˜’ environmental groups r like totally against this and i feel them too 🌿 wind farms & solar panels r super important for our planet's future so why r we making it harder 2 get things done? πŸ€” i mean paul scully was supposed 2 b the planning min but now he's just as bad πŸ™„ at least chris is being upfront about his intentions though lol what a shame 😒

I'm so done with these planning law changes πŸ€―πŸ’”. I mean, I get that we need more homes and all, but come on! What about our parks and wildlife? We're already losing so much of it to development...it feels like we're just trading one problem for another 🌳😩. And now mines and power projects are getting the same fast-tracked treatment? That's just crazy talk πŸ’₯. Can't we find a way to balance business with environmental concerns? It's all about compromise, right? πŸ€” Not sure what's going on here...

idk about this new planning law πŸ€”. sounds like they're just gonna greenlight whatever big corp wants to build without even checking if it's gonna harm the planet 😬. i mean, don't get me wrong, we need more houses and stuff, but can't we find a balance between progress and taking care of our environment? 🌎 some people might say this will create jobs and boost the economy, but what about the long-term costs to the health of our air and water? πŸ€•

Ugh, sounds like the gov is just gonna rush into things without thinking about the consequences πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Mining and solar farms are cool and all, but do we really want to sacrifice our environment for the sake of economic growth? 🌳 I mean, isn't it possible that these reforms could backfire and lead to more problems in the long run? πŸ€” The Greens are trying to sound alarmist, but at least they're thinking about the bigger picture. Meanwhile, Minns is just hoping to get his hands on some new investment dollars πŸ’Έ. Not exactly inspiring confidence in the gov's ability to make responsible decisions πŸ˜’

minns is trying to make nsw sound like a cool investment spot πŸ€”, but honestly, it feels like he's just following suit with every other state that prioritizes big business over environmental concerns πŸŒ³πŸ’Έ. newsflash: we already have enough pollution and noise in our lives, do we really need more? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ at least the greens are speaking truth to power, even if it's a bit dramatic πŸ˜’

πŸ€”πŸ’‘ this is a bad idea πŸš«πŸ’”, mining and power projects should be carefully thought through before rushing into it πŸ•°οΈ. What about our planet's future? 🌎 We can't just sacrifice environmental concerns for economic growth πŸ’Έ. It's not all about business interests πŸ€‘, there needs to be balance πŸ‘Œ.

The government is trying to sweep this under the rug 🧹 but we need more transparency πŸ” and public input πŸ’¬. The Greens are right to question this plan πŸ€” and I'm with them on this one 😊. We can't let big business run wild in NSW πŸš‚ without considering the consequences ⚠️.

We need better planning πŸ—ΊοΈ that takes into account environmental impact 🌳, not just short-term gains πŸ’Έ. The Investment Delivery Authority might sound like a good idea 🀝 but it's being used to push through changes πŸ”„. We need to be careful what we wish for 🎁 because this could backfire 🚨.

Let's keep the debate going πŸ’¬ and make sure our voices are heard πŸ‘‚. We can't let politicians rush into decisions without considering all the facts πŸ“Š. This is a big deal 🀯 and we need to be careful about how we move forward πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ.
