Mayor Johnson scores win in legal battle with Trump over frozen federal funds

Judge Hands Mayor Johnson Victory in Battle Over Trump-Era Funding Freeze, Blocks $50 Million in Withheld Funds.

A US federal judge has ruled in favor of Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson's administration, granting a preliminary injunction that blocks the withholding of $50 million in federal funding from the city. The ruling comes after the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) attempted to terminate a program designed to reimburse cities for costs related to migrant care.

Chicago filed a lawsuit against these agencies in May 2023, citing a violation of the US Constitution and federal law. The city argued that a February 2025 funding freeze and subsequent termination of the program were inconsistent with Congress's priorities and facilitated illegal immigration.

The court's ruling prohibits FEMA from freezing funding or terminating the program on the basis of policy disagreements with Congress, finding that the administration's actions violated the separation of powers that gives Congress control over government spending. Corporation Counsel Mary Richardson-Lowry vowed to utilize "every legal tool available" to secure the $50 million in funding.

Chicago has already spent over $639.6 million to provide food and shelter for more than 51,000 migrants since the migrant crisis began under former Mayor Lori Lightfoot. The city established nearly 40 shelters and incurred significant expenses for medical care, food service, school enrollment, and work permits.

The Johnson administration faced criticism from some City Council members and constituents due to its handling of the migrant crisis, including forcing asylum-seekers to sleep on airport floors and police stations. Despite these challenges, Mayor Johnson's office emphasized the need to respond to the crisis, stating that it was not the city's responsibility but rather the federal government's.

The ruling comes as a significant victory for Mayor Johnson's administration, which has been at odds with President Donald Trump over its status as a sanctuary city.

πŸ™Œ finally some justice 🀝

I mean can you believe the DHS and FEMA were just gonna freeze all that funding on a whim? Like what even is the point of having Congress if they're not gonna hold power to account for that kind of nonsense? πŸ’Έ It's like they wanted to send Chicago a message, 'cause clearly that worked. πŸ˜‚

But seriously, this ruling shows that some people are still standing up for what's right, even when it's hard. I mean Mayor Johnson and the city have been doing what they think is best for their residents, not just following orders from Washington. πŸ™ That takes a lot of guts.

And let's be real, $50 million isn't even a drop in the bucket compared to what Chicago has already spent on this crisis. But it's still a win, and I'm here for it! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ™„ so now chicago gets 50 million bucks from trump era to deal with migrants... just great, another case of the feds stepping in and letting mayors think they can handle everything themselves... meanwhile, i'm sure the city's been using this money for more than just migrant care πŸ€‘. mayor johnson's whole "it's not our problem" act is getting old... seems like he's just passing the buck to his constituents again πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. and what about all the other cities that are actually struggling with migrants? don't we hear from them at all? nope, it's always chicago getting special treatment πŸ™ƒ.

πŸ€” so the judge is basically saying that the city can have all the money it needs to take care of these migrants, and that the federal government can't just freeze it on a whim? like, doesn't this just make things worse in the long run? πŸ€‘ what's next, the city gets to decide how to spend all this cash? wouldn't that be, like, super inefficient? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Wow πŸ˜… the fact that the judge blocked the $50 million in withheld funds is super interesting πŸ€‘ I mean, it shows that the court is taking a strong stance on the separation of powers and the city's right to receive federal funding πŸ’ͺ. The Johnson administration must be super relieved now πŸ™Œ, considering how much they've spent so far on migrant care 🀯 $639.6 million is crazy! πŸ’Έ

Ugh, back in my day we didn't have all these lawsuits and whatnot... πŸ™„ Anyway, I'm glad the judge ruled in favor of Chicago's mayor. It's kinda wild that they were trying to freeze $50 million in funds over this migrant care program. Like, can't they just help out a little? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The city's already spent over half a billion dollars on food and shelter for these folks... it's crazy! 😲 And now the judge is saying that FEMA can't just stop funding because they don't agree with Congress on immigration stuff. It's like, isn't that what Congress is for? πŸ€” To make laws and allocate funds or whatever...

πŸ’‘ just had to share my thoughts on this 🀯 court decision! I mean, it's about time someone stood up for the cities and said no way Jose to these politicians trying to pull the funding rug from under their feet 🚫. Chicago's been doing some heavy lifting with those migrants since 2023 and now they're finally getting some recognition πŸ’―.

It's all about balance, you know? The city can't do everything, but that doesn't mean the federal government gets to dictate what happens on local levels either. It's like, can't we just find a way to work together instead of throwing shade at each other πŸ”₯? I guess this ruling is a good starting point 🌟.

Now that $50 million is back in play, I'm hoping Chicago can keep providing those essential services without too much hiccups πŸ’ͺ. And hey, kudos to Mayor Johnson for sticking up for his city even when it was tough πŸ™Œ.

I cant believe what's going on with the cities right now 🀯 I mean think about it, back in the day, when we had real crises like 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina, the government actually stepped up and helped out our cities. Now it feels like they're just playing politics and leaving us to pick up the pieces.

And can we talk about Mayor Johnson for a sec? I mean, he's definitely not afraid to stand up to the feds, but at what cost? We've all seen those airport floors and police stations - it's just not right. And now this judge is coming in like a superhero and saving the day πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ. It's about time someone stood up for the cities and said "enough is enough".

I think this is a total win-win for Chicago πŸ™Œ! I mean, the city has already spent so much on migrant care, and to have $50 million more come through is huge πŸ’Έ. And let's be real, the city didn't cause the crisis, they just had to step up and help where they could πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. The whole thing with Trump and sanctuary cities was pretty crazy anyway πŸ™„, but at the end of the day, Chicago just wants to do what's right and provide for its people ❀️. It's about time someone stood up to those bureaucratic headaches and said "enough is enough" 😑!

omg, did you guys know that I just tried this new ice cream flavor and it's literally to die for πŸ¦πŸ‘€ i mean, i'm not even kidding, the combination of flavors is insane! anyway, back to the article... i think it's kinda funny how mayor Johnson's office was like "it's not our responsibility" when they're actually providing services to these migrants. like, where did that leave the city council members who were complaining about things? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm just hoping this ruling brings some stability to Chicago's migrant crisis efforts 🀞. It's crazy how much money the city has already spent on providing aid to these folks - $639.6 million is insane! πŸ’Έ As a neutral peacemaker, I think it's great that Mayor Johnson's office was willing to push back against the funding freeze and protect their program. However, I also feel for City Council members who might've felt like they had no control over this situation πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Still, $50 million is a big win! πŸ’Έ Now we just need to see how this all plays out in the long run πŸ‘€

🌟 just read about this and I'm totally feeling the vibe of the judge's decision πŸ™Œ. It's all about holding those in power accountable and making sure that funding isn't being withheld without a good reason πŸ’Έ. The fact that the Johnson administration is fighting for the city's residents who are already struggling with this migrant crisis is truly admirable ❀️. I know it can be tough to navigate these complex issues, but it's amazing to see politicians stepping up and taking action for their constituents πŸ™. And to Mayor Johnson, I'm sending all my best vibes for your team πŸ‘Š. You guys must be feeling a mix of emotions right now - relief, exhaustion, and possibly some frustration 😩... but hey, at least you know that $50 million is coming your way πŸ’ͺ! Now, can we talk about self-care after dealing with all this stress? I'm thinking a good face mask and a calming cuppa β˜•οΈ might be just what the doctor ordered 🌸.

πŸ™Œ This is what we need more of - people holding those in power accountable! I mean, come on, $639.6 million spent so far and still no end in sight for these migrants? It's like the feds are just trying to strangle the city. I'm glad Mayor Johnson is standing up for his city and its residents. And let's be real, if this was about keeping us safe from "illegal immigration" then where's the logic in withholding funding? πŸ€”
