Manchester United sign Wangerheim, Birmingham make 'statement of intent'

Manchester United has made a significant move in the January transfer window by signing Sweden forward Ellen Wangerheim from Hammarby. The 21-year-old is now bound to the club until June 2029. According to Matt Johnson, Director of Women's Football at Manchester United, Wangerheim was one of Europe's best young talents and will bring a dynamic, invasive, and versatile style to the team.

Wangerheim expressed her excitement upon joining the Red Devils, stating that it feels amazing to be part of the club with big history. She also spoke about her ambition to play abroad in Europe, which is now finally fulfilled. Wangerheim's arrival comes at a time when United are looking to bolster their forward line, having recently lost veteran striker Rachel Williams to Leicester and Brazil forward Geyse joining Club América in Mexico.

The situation isn't without challenges for Manchester United, however, as England midfielder Ella Toone will be out of action for at least six weeks due to a hip injury. Despite this setback, head coach Marc Skinner is optimistic that Toone will return before the end of the season.

On the other side of the pitch, Birmingham City has made a bold statement by signing Swedish attacking midfielder Wilma Leidhammar from Norrköping. The 22-year-old has scored 27 goals and provided 11 assists in Sweden's top division since 2022 and is now part of the Blues' squad. According to Amy Merricks, Head Coach of Birmingham City, this transfer fee is a "real statement of intent" for the club.

Leidhammar expressed her desire to help the team win promotion and spoke highly of her new employer, saying she felt a sense of ambition from their conversations. The technical director, Hope Powell, highlighted Leidhammar's vast experience, particularly with Sweden's youth teams, and described her as having a "desire and professionalism" that will be invaluable for the club.

With these signings, both Manchester United and Birmingham City are sending clear messages about their ambitions for the season ahead.

😬 Oh man, I'm still trying to process how amazing this transfer window has been so far!!! Manchester United just landed Ellen Wangerheim and she's literally going to change the game! 🤩 The girl is 21 and already one of Europe's best young talents - talk about promising future! 🌟

And Birmingham City getting Wilma Leidhammar? Genius move, pure genius 💡. I mean, this girl has been on fire in Sweden's top division since 2022 and she's now helping the Blues make a statement about their ambitions for promotion 🚀.

I'm not even going to get into how much I hate losing Ella Toone with her hip injury 😭, but Marc Skinner seems like a pro that he'll have her back on the pitch before the season ends 💪. And those Birmingham City signings? The confidence is palpable 🎯.

But what really got me excited was Wangerheim's interview about feeling a sense of ambition from the club and wanting to play abroad - she's all in, people! 🔥 We're gonna see some incredible football this season, I can feel it 💥.

I gotta say, I'm lovin' this transfer window so far... but then again, not so much 🤔. Like, why do teams keep sayin' they wanna bolster their forward line, but can't even hold onto their current players? 🤷‍♂️ Rachel Williams and Geyse are already out, and now we're supposed to believe that Wangerheim is gonna be the magic solution? 😒 Don't get me wrong, she's a talented player and all, but I'm still skeptical... and what about Toone's injury? Like, six weeks ain't nothin' 🏥. And on the other side, Birmingham City thinks they're makin' a statement with Leidhammar's transfer fee? Really? It's just a bunch of numbers, you know? 💸 Anyway, I guess we'll see how it all plays out... for now 🤞

Just got the scoop on those big transfers 🤩! I'm loving the progress being made in women's football, it's awesome to see talented young players like Ellen Wangerheim getting the recognition they deserve 💪. Manchester United and Birmingham City are definitely making moves to strengthen their teams and give themselves a shot at competing for top honors.

I'm also excited about the impact these signings could have on inspiring more girls and women to take up the sport 🏀. It's not just about winning championships, it's about paving the way for future generations to follow in your footsteps. The fact that we're seeing so many talented players like Wilma Leidhammar being signed by top clubs is a testament to how far the game has come 🌟.

Can't wait to see how these new additions shape up on the pitch and help their teams achieve their goals 🔴⚽️!

I'm so stoked to see more women making waves in the football world! Ellen Wangerheim is going to bring such energy to Manchester United's team 🤩. I've been following her career, and she's always been a superstar on the field, even at just 21 years old. Now, I know they've lost Rachel Williams and Geyse to other teams, but I think this signing is exactly what they needed to boost their forward line 🔥. And can we talk about Wilma Leidhammar for a sec? She's basically a goal-scoring machine! 27 goals in Sweden's top division since 2022? That's insane! 😲 I'm loving the ambition and excitement around both these signings, it's like they're ready to take on the world 🌎.

omg, i'm so hyped for ellie wangerheim at man u!! 🤩 she's gonna be lit on the pitch!!! 21 and already making waves in europe...can't wait to see her skills in action 😆 what's up with birmingham city tho? signing wilma leidhammar is like, a dream come true for swedish footy fans 💖 hope powell knows how to get the best out of her 🤞

I'm loving this transfer window so far! 🤩 The signing of Ellen Wangerheim from Hammarby to Manchester United is a game-changer, especially with her dynamic style and versatility on the field. I mean, it's not easy to bring in someone who's been compared to one of Europe's best young talents - that's some serious pressure! 💪 But I'm confident she'll rise to the challenge and bring a new level of excitement to the team.

At the same time, Birmingham City is making a strong statement with Wilma Leidhammar from Norrköping. 27 goals and 11 assists in just three years? That's insane! 😲 And it's not just about the numbers - Leidhammar's experience with Sweden's youth teams is going to be invaluable for the Blues.

One thing that got me thinking, though, is how these signings affect the overall balance of power in the league. With United and Birmingham City bolstering their forward lines, it's going to be a real nail-biter come the end of the season. Can anyone stop them? 💥 Only time will tell, but I'm hyped to watch these teams battle it out! 🏆

ugh i hate how transfer news always gets flooded on my timeline 🙄... it's like every 5 minutes there's some new signing or transfer update. can't we get a decent day without being bombarded with football gossip? and another thing, why do all these transfers have to be so dramatic? "bold statement" this and "real statement of intent" that... can't they just say what they mean for once? 🙃

OMG, I'm so hyped 🤩 about Ellen Wangerheim joining Manchester United! She's literally the future of women's football 😆. I mean, 27 goals and 11 assists in Sweden's top division since 2022? 🤯 That's insane! And to think she's only 21 years old... 🙌 The Red Devils just got a whole lot more exciting 🔥. On the other hand, Birmingham City is making some serious waves with Wilma Leidhammar signing 🌊. Promotion hopes are high for the Blues now 💪. It'll be interesting to see how these signings play out in the season ahead 📆. Bring it on! ⚽️ #WomenInFootball #TransferWindow #BirminghamCity #ManchesterUnited

I THINK IT'S AMAZING TO SEE THESE YOUNG FEMALE FOOTBALLERS GETTING THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY IN THE TOP LEAGUE!!! 🤩👏 ELLEN WANGERHEIM AND WILMA LEIDHAMMARR ARE GOING TO BRING SO MUCH ENERGY AND SKILL TO THEIR RESPECTIVE TEAMS! IT'S AWESOME THAT THEY'RE GETTING THE CHANCE TO PROVE THEMSELVES IN EUROPEAN FOOTBALL 🌍💪
