Man who stole Banksy print to pay off drug debt given 13-month sentence

A 49-year-old man from east London has been sentenced to 13 months in prison for stealing a limited edition Banksy print from an art gallery. The incident occurred in September last year when Larry Fraser broke into the Grove gallery in central London, smashing the glass door with a heavy object before making off with the signed and numbered print.

Fraser, who had been struggling to settle a historical drug debt, was caught on CCTV waiting outside the gallery for about 10 minutes before committing the burglary. He was subsequently taken to a location in London Docklands where he secreted the artwork, which was eventually recovered by police just days later after information was passed to them by a third party.

The print, valued at around £270,000, had been part of an exhibition showcasing a £1.5m collection of 13 Banksy pieces. While Fraser did not know the precise value of the print when he stole it, Judge Brown noted that he must have understood its significance.

This was not Fraser's first brush with trouble, however. He has 18 previous convictions, including robbery and unlawful wounding, and had been out of prison since 2008 after serving a sentence for these crimes. Mitigating for Fraser, his lawyer said that the value of the print had increased significantly since it was stolen.

Despite this, Judge Brown ruled that an immediate prison sentence was necessary due to the seriousness of the crime. The court's rapid response and professionalism in recovering the artwork were praised by the gallery's manager, who described being "completely shocked" but also relieved when he saw the recovered print.

A second man, James Love, had initially been accused of driving Fraser to the gallery as part of a getaway car, but was later cleared after a trial.

🤔 this guy frazer thinks stealing a £270k banksey is worth 13 months in the slammer? i mean, i get it, he's got a history and all that but c'mon, £270k is a life-changing sum of money... 🤑 i guess you could say his lawyer did some maths that didn't quite add up for judge brown though 😐

"Actions speak louder than words." He definitely took actions that were not very loud, let's just say... The poor guy had some serious debt issues and took something that didn't belong to him 🤑. 13 months is still a long time for someone who probably needed help more than punishment 🤷‍♂️.

I gotta say, 13 months in prison for stealin' a Banksy print seems like a pretty soft sentence to me 🤔. I mean, £270k is a lot of cash, and you're basically takin' somethin' that's worth more than most people's houses 💸. But at the same time, it's not like he was hurt anyone or stole a whole lot of other stuff, just this one print 📺.

I'm also wonderin' how much of a role social media played in the recovery of the print 🤝. I heard that some dude on Twitter shared a pic of the stolen artwork and it basically led to the police bein' able to track down Fraser 💡. It's wild thinkin' about how quickly info spreads online these days 📊.

Anyway, gotta give props to the gallery's manager for stayin' calm and relieved that their print was recovered 🙏. And I'm guessin' the police were pretty cool too for gettin' there so fast 👮‍♂️.

omg did u see that news about the guy who stole a banksy print? like i dont blame him for trying to get out of debt or anything, but 13 months in prison is harsh, innit? 🤔 he's already been in and out of prison 18 times so like what's the diff? Judge Brown was all like "immediate sentence" but i feel for the guy, his lawyer said the value of the print increased a lot since it was stolen... still, gotta respect the gallery and police who got the artwork back 🙏 it's wild that a random person tipped off the authorities tho, saved the day! 👮‍♀️

ugh another art thief gets caught 😩🤦‍♂️ 13 months in prison is kinda harsh, imo 🤔 but i guess he's got history and knew what he was doing when he took the print...£270k is still a lot of dosh 💸 and it's crazy how he could just casually drive around waiting for the cops to show up outside the gallery 10 minutes before committing the crime 🚗😏 at least the art piece was recovered, that's a win 🎉 but seriously, what's with the long history of getting into trouble? seems like a classic case of "you reap what you sow" 🌼

😡 I mean come on! Thirteen months for a stolen Banksy print?! 🤯 That's some light sentencing if you ask me... I get it, he had some financial struggles and stuff, but this is art we're talking about here, not just some random valuable object! 🖼️ The fact that it was signed and numbered only adds to the value of it. But still, £270k is a nice chunk of change, even if it's not as much as he was hoping for... 😒

🤯 I mean, 13 months for stealing a Banksy print? That's pretty harsh, innit? 🤷‍♂️ Like, I get it, the guy did something wrong, but it's just art! You can't put a price on stuff like that. And from what I've seen, he didn't even know the full value of it. It's not like he was trying to sell it or anything. He just got caught up in the moment and made a mistake. 🤔

And 18 previous convictions? That's a lot, mate! You'd think they'd take that into account when sentencing him. I'm all for justice, but I don't know if this is the fairest way to go about it. 😐

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one 🤯. I mean, £270k is a pretty penny, and you'd think someone with 18 previous convictions would know better than to get mixed up in a heist. But at the same time, I can understand how desperate Fraser must have felt, struggling to settle that historical debt 💸.

It's also crazy to think about the security measures needed for something like this – I mean, smashing a glass door just to get to it? That's some serious expertise 🤓. And kudos to the gallery staff and police who were able to recover the artwork so quickly. It's just one of those things where you can't help but feel sorry for Fraser, even if his actions were wrong.

What do you guys think? Should he have gotten a longer sentence, or was 13 months fair given his background? 🤔

This Banksy theft is wild 🤯... I mean, £270k? That's like, crazy! 😲 You'd think someone with 18 priors would know better than to swipe art worth that much dough 💸. But I guess desperation can lead to some pretty reckless decisions... I draw a Venn diagram of "desperate people" and "reckless actions"... they kinda overlap 🔄

The fact that the gallery's manager was "completely shocked" but also "relieved" when the print turned up is pretty great news 🤩. And kudos to the police for getting it back so fast - I imagine that must've been a stressful situation 😬.

But, you know, crime doesn't pay (especially not with art 😂). Hopefully Fraser gets some help and turns his life around 🌟

OMG, 13 months in prison for a £270k Banksy print? That's like, totally harsh, IMHO 🤯! I mean, sure, Fraser knew what he was getting himself into and the value of the print increased since it was stolen, but 13 months seems excessive 😩. Maybe a community service or rehab program would've been a better option for him? 🤷‍♂️ But, gotta give props to the police and gallery staff for recovering the artwork quickly - that's some top-notch detective work! 💡
