Man City vs Liverpool: Disallowed Virgil van Dijk goal backed by Howard Webb

Premier League referees' chief Howard Webb has defended the decision to disallow Liverpool's goal against Manchester City, stating it was "not unreasonable". The goal, scored by Virgil van Dijk in the 38th minute, was initially ruled out for offside against Andrew Robertson. However, a VAR review later cleared the goal.

Webb, speaking on the Match Officials Mic'd Up show, explained that there were valid reasons for the goal to be ruled out. He stated that interfering with an opponent where the offside position player doesn't play the ball and officials have to make a judgment about whether their actions impact an opponent are subjective decisions.

The chief referee said that when Van Dijk headed the ball forward, Robertson's clear action to duck below it could still cause hesitation from the goalkeeper. Webb also compared this situation to a similar offside incident at Wolves last season, which was initially ruled out but given through a VAR review.

Webb acknowledged that some people may believe the goal should have stood, but he believed there were valid reasons for the on-field decision. He emphasized that referees have to weigh up various factors when making decisions, including line of vision and actions by players.

The decision has been met with frustration from Liverpool fans, who feel that the goal was correctly disallowed. The match ended 3-0 in favour of Manchester City.

lol the refs are back to form πŸ˜‚πŸ‘€ i mean, come on, you gotta love how Webb is just giving it to us straight - 'it's not unreasonable'. like, really? 🀣 and now we get to enjoy another thrilling season of "i thought that was onside, nope, sorry mate" πŸ™„. the problem is, when it comes down to it, refs are basically making up their own rules mid-game. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i'm all for using technology to help, but can't we just have a clear set of laws to follow? πŸ™ƒ

I felt for the Reds... πŸ€” I mean, Virgil's headed it clear as day and Robertson didn't even touch the ball, right? It looked like a no-brainer to me, but I guess that's just how VAR works sometimes. πŸ“Ί You gotta respect Webb's decision-making, he's doing his best to make those tough calls. But fair play, Liverpool fans are gutted about it πŸ˜”. That City team was on fire, though! πŸ‘Š

lol what's up with this officiating πŸ˜‚? i mean i get it refs have to make tough calls but come on van dijk literally heads the ball forward and robertson ducks below it? that's not even a guarantee to distract the goalie... and now webb's saying that's subjective πŸ€”? like, how subjective is it when you see it in slow mo? i feel for liverpool fans, they're right to be frustrated 😩. the thing is refs can't just sit there and watch the game all day, they have to make split second decisions... but does that mean we gotta accept them even if we don't agree with 'em? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I think Webb is being super polite but it's not like he's hiding something! That offside call was a no-brainer – Robertson clearly interfered with Van Dijk's movement, it's basic football. I mean, if you don't play the ball and just get in the way, that's not okay. And yeah, the goal did feel like it should've stood, but VAR saved us from a bad decision πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Webb's whole point about making subjective decisions is true, but that doesn't mean we have to agree with it πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ.

Omg I was watching that game last nite 🀯! I don't get why everyone's so upset about it tho πŸ™„. Like I'm no expert but I think Webb made the right call πŸ“. Van Dijk scored an amazing goal and then Robertson does this weird duck move and it throws off the goalie πŸ˜‚. I can see why refs would be hesitant to give it to Liverpool tbh πŸ‘€. And yeah that Wolves game last season was a similar situation, so maybe Webb was just following his instincts πŸ€”. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Reds fan at heart ❀️, but I think Webb did the right thing... most of the time 😜 anyway, that match was insane! πŸ’₯

I dont get why people are saying the goal should've stood πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ... I mean, Van Dijk does score a beauty of a header but come on, Robertson is literally ducking below it like he's trying to avoid him lol πŸ™ˆ. And yeah, I can see how the ref might think that could've caused some hesitation with the goalie... it's not an unreasonable call imo πŸ‘. The thing is, VAR did review it and they overturned the decision, so I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree πŸ˜‚.

πŸ˜’ I'm calling BS on Webb's explanation πŸ™„. How can ducking below a ball not affect the goalie? That's like saying "oh, but it's subjective" when you're clearly wrong πŸ˜‚. And what about the fact that Robertson was in an offside position in the first place? It's not just about Van Dijk's goal, it's about the whole system being bugged πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. The VAR review might've confirmed it but shouldn't Webb have been more clear from the start? It's all about consistency now πŸ‘€.

lol what a call πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ i mean, i get it from the ref's POV but for the fans it's like they did everything wrong 😩 robertson ducks below the ball and it's offside? come on! πŸ™„ Webb says it's not unreasonable, but for us fans, that's just sour grapes. we knew that call was coming and now we're left wondering what could've been πŸ’” 3-0 is a thrashing, but that one call still stings πŸ€•

I'm telling ya, this Premier League drama is getting out of hand 🀯! Just check these stats:

* Average time taken for VAR reviews: 2 minutes and 40 seconds (1st season: 4 minutes 22 seconds) ⏱️
* Percentage of VAR-aided goals scored in the 2024-25 Premier League season: 21.9% πŸ“ˆ

I'm not saying Webb was wrong, but I do think Liverpool fans are gonna be salty for a while πŸ˜”. According to Google Trends, searches for "Premier League VAR controversy" have increased by 300% over the past week πŸ”.

These stats on goal disallowed and goals scored with VAR involvement:
* Disallowed goals (2024-25): 34
* Goals scored with VAR (2024-25): 21 πŸ“Š

Just a thought, but maybe Webb's right? Interfering with an opponent is indeed subjective 😊. What do you guys think? Share your opinions! πŸ’¬

ugh dont get me wrong i love liverpool but come on refs are humans they make mistakes πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ and var is there to help not to make everything perfect so yeah its good that weve got the technology but refs gotta be able to use it properly too 😊 anyway i do feel for van dijk hes a legend πŸ™Œ

πŸ˜’ Refs are always gonna be a joke, right? Like, can't we just get it right for once? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ So Howard Webb's defending this call and says it was "not unreasonable"... yeah sure, chief... I'm sure the 50k+ Liverpool fans would love to have that kind of logic applied to all their decisions πŸ™„. And let's be real, how many times do we see a player get off scot-free for diving? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ At least Van Dijk actually did something (well, attempted to, anyway) with the ball... I guess some players can just magically teleport into being offside now? πŸš€ Anyway, Webb's all about weighing up factors and judging based on actions... sounds like a bunch of hooey to me πŸ‘Ž.

πŸ˜’ I'm still trying to wrap my head around that VAR review... like how can you rule out a clear goal just cuz Robertson ducked? πŸ€” The whole thing seems kinda arbitrary, imo. Van Dijk's not trying to interfere with anyone, he just scores the goal and what happens next is on the goalkeeper, not him. And another thing, if it was a subjective decision, why didn't Webb have the gut to go with his initial call? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Wow, VAR is still super confusing πŸ€”, I mean, I get why they're trying to make decisions but sometimes it feels like a roll of the dice 🎲, especially when there's so much at stake in these big games 😬. Interesting how Webb just shrugs off all the fan frustration and says the ref had valid reasons for the call πŸ™. But what if the fans know better than the refs? πŸ˜‚

πŸ€” "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." - Thomas Edison πŸ’‘ Sometimes we don't see the reasoning behind certain decisions, especially when they go against our initial instinct. Referees are human and can make mistakes too! The Premier League is a high-stakes competition where split-second decisions can change the outcome of the game. Maybe the goal should have stood, but sometimes technology and VAR reviews come to the rescue! πŸ€–

omg i dont think its fair to blame webb and his team for makin a wrong call lol the ref had to make a split second decision and thats what var is there for πŸ€” anyway, im not surprised that some ppl are still salty about it πŸ˜… but lets be real, van dijk's header was prob gonna cause some trouble no matter what πŸ’₯

I think it's pretty clear that Webb is doing his job to the best of his ability, even if the goal went against Liverpool πŸ€”. I mean, we've all been there when VAR reviews a decision and it changes the whole game. But the thing is, refs have to make tough calls on the fly, and sometimes those calls aren't gonna be popular with everyone 😐. I get why Liverpool fans are frustrated, but Webb's just trying to explain his thought process behind the call πŸ“Š. It's not always easy to see, but that's what makes this job so tricky πŸ’₯. Maybe we'll never know for sure if it was the right call or not, but at least Webb is being honest about why he made it πŸ‘
