James Milner: From £70-a-week YTS player to brink of Premier League appearance record

James Milner, a midfielder for Brighton & Hove Albion and the England national team, has been playing professionally for over 20 years. He is known for his versatility, work rate, and ability to read the game. Despite not being considered one of the all-time greats, Milner is widely respected for his dedication to the sport and his contributions to his teams.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Milner discussed his career and the lessons he has learned along the way. He spoke about the importance of hard work, discipline, and adaptability in becoming a successful professional footballer.

"Milner's name never really is mentioned as one of the greats, but he is, without a doubt," said former Leeds and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson. "It's everything you do, it's how you walk around at home, it's what shoes you wear, it's how you sleep, it's what pillows you sleep on, it's what you eat, it's what you put in your body. And for him to have evolved the way that the game's evolved as well, it's huge credit to himself as a person, not just a footballer, but as a person."

Milner's career has been marked by his consistency and longevity at the top level of English football. He has played for several clubs, including Leeds United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Newcastle United, among others.

Despite turning 40 in January, Milner still treats every game as though it could be his last. He is known for his tireless work rate and his ability to read the game, which has earned him a reputation as one of the most intelligent players in the Premier League.

"I said, 'Leave it out, Nige, I'm 16!'" Milner recalled about a conversation he had with veteran Leeds goalkeeper Nigel Martyn soon after breaking into the first team 24 years ago. "And here we are in the blink of an eye - and I'm where he was."

Milner's contract is set to expire in the summer, and it remains to be seen whether he will continue playing at a high level or retire from professional football. However, his dedication to the sport and his commitment to being the best version of himself have earned him a place among the all-time greats of English football.

man, 40 years in pro footy is insane 💥! he's like the real deal, you know? always giving it his all on the pitch 🏃‍♂️. and to hear what paul robinson is saying about him, it's clear he's not just a footballer, but a legend off the field too 🙌. milner's dedication to fitness and adaptability is huge - i've seen him do some crazy training sessions in the past 🏋️‍♂️. whether or not he'll stick around for another season remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: james milner is a true legend of english footy 👑.

🤯 40 and still going strong? I mean, that's insane! 🤸‍♂️ The guy's been playing for over 20 years and he's still treating every game like it's his last match. That's mental toughness right there. 👏 And to think about how far he's come from being a 16-year-old trying to break into the first team, he must have some serious life experience. 💭 I love how Paul Robinson compared him to a person who lives their life with attention to detail - you eat what you put in your body, you wear the right shoes, and even how you sleep is important. That's dedication! 🧘‍♂️ It'll be interesting to see what he decides to do next, but I think he's got this whole "retirement" thing figured out. 😎

He's such an inspiration! I mean, 40 and still going strong, that's what I call dedication 💪🏽. He's like the ultimate example of how hard work and discipline can take you places. I'm sure it's not always easy, but he's a true professional. And to hear Paul Robinson saying all those things about him, it just goes to show that Milner is more than just a good footballer - he's a great role model 🙌.

idk why ppl always gotta label ppl as 'great' or not its like milner's just trying 2 live his life 2 the fullest at 40 lol 🤷‍♂️ he's still out there grindin, playin like hes 16, and nobody's tryna stop him. i think thats whats so admirable about him he ain't worried bout what ppl think, hes just focused on gettin better n doin his thang. nd yeah paul robinson said it all himself its not about being a 'great' footballer but being a great person 2

I think this Milner thing is kinda like our politicians - they might not be the flashiest ones out there, but you can count on 'em to show up and give it their all. I mean, 20 years in the game? That's like a marathon session in Parliament! He's gotta keep pushing himself to stay relevant, just like how our lawmakers need to stay on top of their game. And let's be real, at 40, he's still going strong - that's like a seasoned PM navigating the complexities of Brexit! 💪🏽 What's more impressive, though? The fact that Milner can adapt to changing circumstances (game, teams, etc.) or how our politicians respond to those same changes? 🤔

🤔 Milner is defo one of the most underrated players out there, ya know? He's been grinding for 20+ years and still gets it done 🏃‍♂️💪. I mean, the guy's always on 🔥, you can tell he loves the game and wants to give it everything he's got every single matchday 💕. Don't get me wrong, he might not be a traditional superstar like some of the others, but his work rate and football IQ are top-notch 🤓. I reckon he'll keep going till he decides to hang up his boots, even if it means 40+ years in the game 😂.

🤔 I think what's really inspiring about Milner is how he's managed to stay adaptable and hungry for success even after two decades in the game 🏈💪 He never seems to settle for just "good enough" - instead, he keeps pushing himself to be better, whether it's on the pitch or off 😊 And that work rate of his? Unmatched 💨 I mean, who else can say they're giving it their all every single match, no matter how old they get 🤯 The Premier League's definitely lost a little bit of magic with him leaving at the end of the season 👋

Milner's story is actually kinda inspiring 🤔. People always focus on those superstars who make headlines but he just quietly gets the job done, year in and out. His work rate is insane 💪! He's like that one uncle at family gatherings who shows up with a plate of his famous lasagna every time. Not flashy but always reliable. What I think people underestimate about Milner is how much mental toughness he must have to keep playing at 40 🕰️. It's not just physical, it's mental and emotional too. He's like the ultimate team player - he'll put in the extra training sessions so his teammates can shine. Love this guy 💛

I mean, 40 years in the game is insane! 🤯 He's still treating every game like it's his last, which is super admirable, but also kinda worrying. I guess you can't blame the guy for wanting to make the most of his career, but what's next? Is he gonna start wearing a cape on the pitch? 😂 Seriously though, Milner's longevity is a testament to his work ethic and dedication, and it's awesome that he's still inspiring people with his passion for the game. But at some point, you gotta think about your body and when to slow down, right? 🤔

Milner is like 🙏💚💫 - humble, hard worker, and still shining bright at 40! 🎉 He's not one of those flashy players but his dedication & work rate are goals ⚽️! I love how he adapts to the game & stays hungry for success 🍴. As Paul Robinson said, it's all about the little things 😊 - attitude, training habits, & mental toughness. Milner's a true role model for aspiring players 👏 & fans alike 💖. Let's hope he gets to sign with another top team or continue playing on his terms ⚔️!

🏟️ 20 years is a long time in football, and James Milner's longevity is truly inspiring 💪. He's not one of those superstars who suddenly retire at 30 🙅‍♂️, but instead continues to grind away with the same passion and dedication. I love how he still treats every game like it's his last, it's amazing to see a player with so much experience still giving it their all 💥. And let's be real, his work rate is insane 🤯 - he's one of those players who doesn't just show up on the pitch, but also puts in extra hours in training and recovery 💼. His humility and down-to-earth attitude are a breath of fresh air in an industry that often values flash over substance 💫. I think he'll continue to surprise people with his performances even at 40 🎉!

I'm so impressed by Milner's longevity in the game 🤩! 20 years is crazy, especially when you consider he's still going strong at 40 💪. It just goes to show that hard work and dedication really do pay off. I mean, who wouldn't want to be able to play at a high level like that into their 40s? His attitude towards the game is so inspiring too - always giving it his all, never taking anything for granted... he's a role model on and off the pitch 😊. And to think about how far he's come from being just 16, talking to an older pro like Nigel Martyn 🤓... it's amazing growth and maturity. Fingers crossed he can keep that up and enjoy some well-deserved success in whatever comes next! 💕

I'm totally stoked for James Milner right now 😍 He's been killing it on the pitch for over 20 years and still goes at it like he's 16 💪🏽! The guy's dedication to fitness, discipline, and adaptability is seriously inspiring 🤯. I mean, turning 40 doesn't seem to be slowing him down one bit! 🙅‍♂️ He's proof that hard work and a growth mindset can take you places ⬆️. Milner's not trying to be some flashy superstar; he's just putting in the graft and getting the job done 💼. Love what he says about leaving out no detail, whether it's training or game prep 📝. We're gonna miss him on the pitch when his contract expires, but we can't wait to see what he does next 🤔👏

You know I think its crazy how milner still brings the energy like hes 20 even though he's 40 lol 😂. He talks about hard work and discipline being key to his success, but you can tell he means it from experience. The way paul robinson praised him is really inspiring, it shows that milners dedication isnt just for games on the pitch, its how he lives his life too 🤝. I think thats a great message for anyone trying to make a career in any field.

Milner is literally the ultimate example of how hard work & discipline can take you far in life! 🙌 I mean, 20+ years in the game? That's insane! And what's crazy is he still treats every match like it's his last 💪. His consistency & longevity at top level are truly inspiring. Love how he mentions doing everything right off the pitch too - shoes, pillows, food... that dedication to being a pro is genuine and admirable.

🤔 I mean, can you blame the guy? He's been grinding for 20+ years and still giving it his all at 40! The stats don't lie, he's been everywhere and done everything. People say he's not a 'great', but what does that even mean? Is it about trophies or personal accolades? Milner's got the work rate of a horse and the brain to match. And let's be real, he's still playing like a 25-year-old 🏃‍♂️. If anyone knows how to adapt, it's him. His secret might just be that he treats every game as his last... which is crazy mental, but fair play to the bloke!

😂 I'm loving how James Milner is defying expectations by still going strong at 40! 🙌 His work ethic and ability to adapt to the game are truly inspiring. 👏 I mean, can you imagine having that same mentality when it comes to your career or life in general? 💪 It's all about being intentional with every detail, from what you eat to how you sleep - it's crazy how much of a difference it can make! 🤯 And I love how he's not taking anything for granted, like his conversation with Nigel Martyn all those years ago. That's the kind of dedication that'll keep you relevant in any field! 💼

🏆 20 years of service is pretty incredible! I think what's impressive about Milner is how he's adapted to the game without getting too flashy or seeking attention - just doing his thing and being a rock-solid player at every club he's been at 🙌
