James Beard names 23 Chicago semifinalists for food awards, including EL Ideas and Kasama

Chicago's culinary scene has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation, with 23 local eateries, chefs, and bars making it to the semifinalist list for this year’s prestigious awards. Among them are EL Ideas, known for its eclectic American fare, and Kasama, a Ukrainian Village restaurant that recently earned its second Michelin star.

The Outstanding Restaurant award is among those being awarded, with only nine local restaurants vying for the title. Other notable nominees include Mi Tocaya Antojeria, where Diana Dávila was named an Outstanding Chef semifinalist; Galit, which Zachary Engel, another Outstanding Chef nominee, helms in Lincoln Park.

The James Beard Awards are often referred to as the "Oscars of the food world." This year's finalists will be announced on March 31, with the awards ceremony taking place at Chicago's Lyric Opera House on June 15. Past winners include restaurants like Kumiko and Oriole, who both took home top honors last year.

Some of this year’s semifinalists include Daisies for Outstanding Hospitality, Brasero for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program, and Hopleaf for Outstanding Bar. Sanders BBQ Supply Co., where Nick Kleutsch and James Sanders are nominated for Best Chef: Great Lakes, is also among the nominees.

🤩🍴 Chicago is killing it in the food scene! 🌮👏 I'm so hyped for EL Ideas & Kasama, they're both serving up some amazing eats 🍰🥘. And can we talk about the Outstanding Restaurant award? 😍 Only nine local restaurants are vying for it, which means the competition is gonna be fierce 💪. Galit and Mi Tocaya Antojeria are also on my radar, Diana Dávila's cooking skills are on point 🤤. The James Beard Awards are like the Oscars of food, can't wait to see who takes home the top honors 🎉. And yay for all the other nominees too! 💯👏

🤩 So I heard from a "friend" of a friend that the competition for those James Beard Awards is gonna be CRAZY! I mean, with Kasama getting a Michelin star and EL Ideas on the list, you know it's gonna be tough to take home the top prize. And can we talk about how awesome it is that Sanders BBQ Supply Co. is nominated for Best Chef: Great Lakes? Nick Kleutsch and James Sanders are total rockstars! 🤘 The way I see it, this year's awards ceremony is gonna be a real showdown between the best of the best in Chicago's food scene. Fingers crossed for all these amazing restaurants and chefs... can't wait to see who takes home the gold! 💥

Just saw that Chicago's food scene is getting some major recognition from the James Beard Foundation 🤩! It's awesome to see all these local eateries and bars making it to the semifinalist list. I mean, who wouldn't want to try out EL Ideas' eclectic American fare or Kasama's Michelin-starred Ukrainian dishes? 🍴 The fact that there are so many talented chefs and restaurants vying for awards is a great sign for our food scene. I'm not surprised to see Mi Tocaya Antojeria, Galit, and Sanders BBQ Supply Co. on the list - they're all super popular and loved by locals. And now we get to wait until March 31 to find out who's going to win those awards 🤔... fingers crossed for our Chicago foodies!

🍴 I'm super stoked to see all these amazing Chicago eats gettin' some love from the James Beard Foundation! It's awesome to see EL Ideas and Kasama makin' it to the semifinals - those places are always poppin' with flavor 🤤. And I'm lovin' that they're recognizin' all the different types of restaurants, not just the fancy ones... there's somethin' for everyone in Chicago's food scene! 💖 Can't wait to see who takes home the awards this year 🎉!

I gotta say, another bunch of overhyped eateries makin' it to the finals 🤔. EL Ideas and Kasama, big deal, they're just serving up fancy food like everyone else. And what's with all these new kids on the block? It feels like the same old faces gettin' recognized year after year. Where's the innovation? I mean, I went to Daisies last month and it was all flash, no substance 🤮. The wine program at Brasero is just a bunch of fancy labels if you ask me. And don't even get me started on the cost of goin' there... ugh 💸

Just saw that 23 Chicago spots made it to the semis for those James Beard Awards 🤩🍴. I'm stoked to see EL Ideas on the list, been meaning to try their eclectic American fare out 😋. Kasama's second Michelin star is huge too, those guys are pushing the boundaries of Ukrainian cuisine. The Outstanding Restaurant award is always a big deal, can't wait to see who takes it home 🏆. Love how the James Beard Awards bring some much-needed love to our local food scene 💕. Can't believe we're already thinking about 2026 😉.

🍴👏 Chicago is killing it in the food world right now! I'm not surprised that EL Ideas and Kasama made it onto the list - their eclectic American fare and Ukrainian flavors are always on point 🤤.

But what's really got me excited is the mix of old-school Chicago joints (like Daisies and Hopleaf) alongside newer, innovative spots like BLVD Steakhouse and Thai Dang. It's like a taste tour of the city! 🌍

And can we talk about Sanders BBQ Supply Co.? Nick Kleutsch and James Sanders are both nominated for Best Chef: Great Lakes - those guys know their BBQ game 💪.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that some of these amazing spots will take home those coveted James Beard Awards. Fingers crossed for EL Ideas, Kasama, and Thai Dang 🤞!

🤔 So Chicago's got some serious food cred now. I mean, 23 spots makes me think they're onto something 🍴. It's dope that EL Ideas and Kasama are repping the city, especially with that Michelin star 💫. And can we talk about the diversity on this list? From Ukrainian to Korean to Latin American cuisine, it's like a foodie's dream come true 🌎. The competition is gonna be fierce for those awards, but I'm rooting for the local chefs and restaurants who are putting in all that hard work 💪. Can't wait to see what the winners will be on June 15 🎉.

🤩 OMG, I'm so hyped for EL Ideas 🤤! I've been raving about their menu for ages, and now they're on the shortlist for Outstanding Restaurant 🏆! Kasama is another fave of mine, and I love that they recently got a Michelin star ⭐️. The James Beard Awards are always so exciting, and it's great to see Chicago's food scene getting some serious recognition 🙌. Can't wait to see the full list and find out who wins what award 🤞!
