Thousands of Google Drive users are experiencing issues with server connections, file access, and website access, according to reports flooding in on Downdetector. The problems began around noon EST on Wednesday, with more than 2,800 users reporting issues just by 1 p.m.
The issue has spread beyond Google Drive, affecting the Google search engine, Google Sheets, and Google Docs, as well as Google Workspace, a cloud computing and collaboration platform used by millions of companies worldwide. Dozens of reports have surfaced about problems with this service as well.
Google confirmed that it is investigating access issues with these services starting around noon, stating that there is currently no workaround available for the affected users.

... I remember back in my day when our college's computer system would crash and we'd all lose hours of work... but this sounds like something that should be a major company like Google having a handle on. I mean, can't they just have some sort of backup plan or emergency server just in case? And what's with the downtime at noon? That's when everyone's trying to get their work done for the day 
. I'm glad I still have my old external hard drive as a backup... this stuff always happens, right?

... they used to have these crazy downtime issues all the time! Like back in 2009 or so, they were always having problems with Gmail and GDrive. But you know what? We didn't care 
Anyway, it just goes to show that even the biggest companies can have a meltdown every now and then
